i wanna watch spiderverse but do i have to see spidertop and spiderbottom first or does it not matter?

It is not necessary to watch Venom to see Spiderverse, no.

Above is right, and no you don’t need to see Deadpool either.

You ever had that urge to take apart your clicky inkpen to see how it works?

Humans love to reverse engineer stuff.

And let's face it, if faced with all kinds of tech from all kinds of different alien species, humans would absolutely steal any and everything so they could reverse engineer it.

Now here's the thing, growing up my parents got a good portion of furniture from the dump because people will dump perfectly good reusable stuff when they get new ones. And the dump would leave that out where people could get it.

So I propose that humans would be going to the technological dumps and finding the perfectly good or slightly used stuff out of the dump so they could reuse it.

Meanwhile the aliens are utterly perplexed at this species digging stuff out of the trash.

"It's trash, Xirboria! Trash! What on Tripellia-9 could a species want WITH TRASH??"

Xirboria shrugged with their chest, "Eh, who knows, the humans are weird. I heard one of them went bonkers over a ship with warp 9 drive from 3 eylons ago just because it had that gross old wing design. I thinks their minds are sideways."

Humans are trash gremlins. Humans are space raccoons.

will never forget when i worked in a fast food joint. some customer wrote like “86 cherries” on their mobile order, as like a pretentious way of say no cherries, but the store was run by a bunch of high schoolers who are working their first job so they collectively went “why the fuck does this guy want 86 fucking cherries” and like piled them onto his milkshake

so when i made this i didn’t expect ANY notes so i feel like an asshole now for not explaining. so incase you check the notes, 86 in restaurant terms means “unavailable or out of stock” but has kinda morphed into “omit” or “leave out”. but none of us had worked in a restaurant before, also why would you not just say “no cherries” it’s the same amount of characters to type

Avatar

Man ordering food: I work in the restaurant business ;)

Children working at restaurant: this guy must really like cherries. Got something in your eye there sir

I've made a shopping list, I'll be making these this weekend.

American cider is essentially cloudy apple juice... I wonder if I could make these in NZ/Aotearoa...

Avatar

Yeah, just get unfiltered apple juice.

I..b-- wh-- j--- NO??!?!?!

I mean -- WHAT?

That's like saying "ghee is essentially melted butter"

Or that "spaghetti sauce is essentially crushed tomatoes"

Avatar

Look, I'm not gonna try to explain it. I've had the argument before.

Here in the USA, we had this thing called prohibition. It was dumb, and people died, and everybody hated it, but basically it changed our dialect and we never recovered and we're all bad with alcohol and cider just means unfiltered apple juice unless it's "hard cider" in which case you have to be 21 years old or older to buy it.

Judge us if you wish, but don't put booze in your cookies biscuits, they'll be dry and sad.

Concept: a bunch of high school Satanists get drunk in the local graveyard and try to conjure a demon, but they’re using one of those “reconstructionist” ritual books that gets its sources all mixed up, so they end up with a minor Mithraic fertility spirit that hasn’t spoken with humans in like 1700 years instead. By the terms of its binding it’s not allowed to leave until it’s ensured a successful harvest for its summoners, which is a problem, because none of these goobers have ever raised so much as a houseplant; if it wants to go home, it’s going to have to teach them how to garden - whether they want to learn or not!

I catch her stockings with my nails when she's going!

Before going to bed, I made a painting of Marsha P. Johnson. That night, I dreamed that I woke up to find her standing at my desk, looking at the canvas. When she noticed I'm awake she said, "You made my chin too small," threw glitter at me and disappeared in a shower of glitter.

@madphantom well show us the art, would you as soon as you fix Marsha's chin okay

Here's the final thing, I think her chin is still a tad bit too small but she has not since complained, so I assume she's satisfied.

I love it so much, it's beautiful!

Biden has signaled that he may be open to considering the idea of canceling some student loan debt, and Republicans on twitter are freaking out like he just declared himself Chairman and is coming to kill all the capitalists.

They're bending over backwards to say that canceling student loan debt is a bad thing. They say that only idiots and liberals have debts, that it's entirely their fault and the debt is deserved, that they shouldn't have to foot the bill for other people going to college, but they fundamentally misunderstand how anything works. Conservative kids go to school too, you know. Republicans aren't all high school drop outs. They have debts, and stand to gain from this just as much as anyone else. The media is saying that canceling debts would give another break to rich people, but rich people don't have student loan debts because they can afford to pay out of pocket. Everyone I know who has debt is dirt poor, so the idea that debt relief is a scam to bail out irresponsible rich kids is bullshit.

And speaking of bailouts, people seem to forget that you don't get to pick and choose what your tax dollars pay for; you don't want to pay for someone else's student loan debts, but you already have to pay for every corporate bailout and subsidy. Every time some trillion dollar company gets a tax break, you foot the bill. Trickle down economics has been funneling money from the bottom to the top for forty years; reverse Robin Hood, the rich steal from the poor. Your tax dollars pad executive pockets, and you're mad that poor people might start to suffer less? I'm sorry if you're a libertarian who thinks all tax is theft, but that's how society works! You pay taxes, you get benefits; the more you pay in taxes, the less you pay to private businesses.

Well, in most countries.

In the United States you pay higher taxes and get nothing in return; no healthcare, no public utilities, no transit, nada. We're so used to going without that as soon as anyone proposes sensible reforms, all the right-wingers shit their pants in fear and calls it communism. Other countries have nice things, so why can't we? If we pay a little bit more in taxes, we pay a LOT LESS in education and healthcare. It's an algebra problem; < or >, which side is bigger? If everyone pools their resources, people can take what they need when they need it, so nobody has to go broke; if you're unwilling to help your community, your statesmen, your countrymen, then you don't deserve the benefits either.

There's an anti-intelectual talking point that college is exclusively for liberal elites, or that it's a leftist snowflake factory that turns hard working red blooded Americans into woke gender-neutral pansies; if that's the case, then why do any Republican politicians go to college? If college is brainwashing, then why are so many senators Ivy League graduates? If going to college changes you and makes you believe something you don't believe, then how did any of them make it out of there even more conservative than before? If you say that they were strong willed and able to reject the brainwashing, then you're admitting that brainwashing doesn't work; and if you counter by saying that it does work but only on weak minded fools and that Republicans are just better at ignoring it, then you're calling yourself a weak minded fool because you're afraid you'd succumb to it! Why do you hold your leaders to a higher standard than yourself? Why do you keep making exceptions for them? "This is a bad thing, unless they do it, then it's okay!" Why do you think they're better than you?

Education isn't a taboo.

Intelligence is not a vice.

Ignorance is not a virtue.

College should be accessible to everyone who wants to attend, and it shouldn't be seen as an indoctrination machine because it very clearly isn't. Student loan debt cancelation isn't some unearned reward for leftists. It isn't bribery ahead of the midterms. It isn't a punishment for uneducated people to pick up the slack. It is the leveling of a playing field that has been lopsided for too long. If good jobs require degrees, then everybody should be able to get a degree without 5 or 6 figures of debt weighing them down. That's a bullshit catch-22; you need to pay a ton of money for the chance to earn more money. Debt cancelation eliminates that hurdle. If you think that you should only go to college if you can afford it outright, then you're saying that only rich elites deserve good jobs; which is it? Do you hate rich elites, or do you want them in charge of everything? Pick a lane, and stay in it!

TLDR: student loan relief benefits everyone at the bottom, regardless of ideology. They would rather have us fight a culture war against one another than unite to fight a class war against them.

Fingers crossed that today's the day. It'll never be full forgiveness like Bernie, it'll never be $50k like Warren, but $10k is a considerable chunk or change to a lot of people. That said, interest rates need to come down too, or else that $10k will be farted away for no reason. This is a pittance, but it's a good start, it's better than the alternative, and my expectations are so low that the only way they could bungle this is if they let Republicans step in the way and block it, "yeah, no, a Trump appointed judge says you can't do that," "oh well. Sorry folks, we did everything we could!"

imagine you start watching this new show and it’s a silly little show about space set in the future then they announce the next season so you wait excitedly for five months and finally it’s here… you all sit round the tv and suddenly one of the main characters who is known for being unemotional starts going mad because of “biology…” and you slowly realise that he needs to have sex or he’s going to die so the other main character risks his entire career to help him out then they start ‘wrestling’ on the sand and the one going through the mating fever ends up killing the other guy which ends the fever but now he’s depressed because he just killed his best friend but wait he’s not actually dead the unemotional one is overjoyed everything’s fine and then they go back to work like nothing happened… you look at everyone else sitting in stunned silence thinking “did any one else think that was a little… yknow” then you accidentally start modern fandom and shipping culture

Based on some of the first-hand accounts I’ve read, fans already had thoughts in that direction but were very cautious about expressing them, because, you know, it was 1967 and they were nice suburban ladies. They referred to the idea of Spock and Kirk being in love as The Premise. One little housewives’ fan club in California wrote to Leonard Nimoy in the hiatus between seasons one and two, and he was very pleasant and agreed to come and meet their group and tell them about being in the show. They didn’t say anything about The Premise directly, in case it offended him, but of course they expressed their enthusiasm for the rapport between Kirk and Spock and how curious they were about Spock’s background and inner life. And Nimoy, who was working on season two by that time, said that he couldn’t give away any specifics but there was an episode coming up that would focus more on Spock’s personal life and the planet Vulcan, and they were naturally delighted and intrigued.

So when they sat down to watch season two, episode one, “Amok Time,” they were primed for an important Spock episode, and then that played out before their widening eyes and I think it’s safe to say it blew their beehives clean off their heads.

...And this is exactly how some of us got onto the path toward getting into SO MUCH [GOOD] TROUBLE later in our lives. Handwritten fanfic... pages and pages and PAGES of it. Tens and hundreds of thousands of words of fanfic. In looseleaf binders.

Just remember: “The first million words are for practice.” :) After that... all bets are off.

And it's also worth bearing in mind that Amok Time was written by Theodore Sturgeon. Sturgeon was a bisexual writer (according to his friend, gay author and academic Samuel R Delany) who wrote "The World Well Lost" (1953) which may have been the first SF story about homosexuality to be published in a mainstream SF magazine, not to mention gay-coded stories like "The Saucer of Loneliness". Ted Sturgeon was a brilliant writer about love, and he knew exactly what he was doing in Amok Time. Although he might not have known what it would spawn.

And if you are curious to read some of his fiction there's a Selected Short Stories of Theodore Sturgeon out there, and the novels The Dreaming Jewels and More Than Human appear to be in print.

Galactic Journey is a blogger who has been working on a multi year historical project, where he reblogs and posts as if it's 55 years in the past. We're currently in the middle of the Star Trek Years, and he is hosting a weekly rewatch on Discord. There are two channels, one where you are historically in character, and the other one, where you can comment in our current time period. To make this even more interesting, Galactic Journey has located period commercials and inserted them into the episodes.

And now that we're in the summer hiatus, the first fanzines and newsletters are being released, and with the help of fan historians who have preserved the zines, he is reading excerpts from the newsletters before the episodes "air "

I believe this is happening on Thursdays, with two gatherings: 5pm pst/8pm est and 8pm pst/11pm est

Feel free to DM me if you'd like an invite to the Discord. Or you can reach out to him directly on Twitter https://twitter.com/journeygalactic

And we're here working to help preserve it! Anyone who has any of those binders as mentioned by @dduane, get in touch!

crap, there was a paper zine I wrote for and they had an k/s zine ‘library’ with a CRAPLOAD of old zines, it’s where I first posted ‘Apsides’- I think it was literally called “T’hy’la” idk if it’s still around but I remember kathleener used to run it. I also actually have a few of those binders lurking around somewhere I picked up from another slasher I met at MediaWest Con in like the early 2000′s. How have I lived long enough to go through like three separate waves of ‘save the old K/S slash fic’

wait. holy shit am I now a writer of the old slash fic wtf lol

I don't know, there's just something that hits different about explicit queer rep baked into a show, you know? When queerness isn't an afterthought. When queerness can't be removed from the story without changing the story. When it isn't added in after the fact. I do not say this from a place of pitting shows against each other; I know a lot of creators have been fighting tooth and nail for any scrap of queer rep. I just think this is why we're all so feral for Our Flag Means Death.
