Yeehawgust 2023 - Day 19

Barbie Horse Adventure

IZZY - *watching Leroy and Jules goof off* You know, this all reminds me off a films from my childhood.

JULES - *Walking over, with Leroy behind them. Both out of breath* What does?

IZZY - The whole situation, two people being brought into a world that isn’t theirs and going on a venture of self discovery.

JULES - Oh?

IZZY - Yeah, one of the Barbie Movies from Earth. Barbie Horse Adventure, I think.

JULES - Still don’t know what a horse is.

LEROY - They’re those mythical things the NCR keeps saying exist. I don’t believe in them.

IZZY - *Just shakes his head*

Yeehawgust 2023 - Day 18

Red Rock Canyon

Jules was out. They had been shot by the bounty hunters.

Leroy had picked them up. He carried them across the wastes. They needed to get them to a doctor, or the next best thing. With the followers being pushed out of Vegas, and Arcade only knowing so much about medicine, he had only one idea left. They were near enough to this group that he could risk moving Jules there without fear of them dying in transit.

Izzy had gone silent, they felt useless. He didn’t know anything about medicine and didn’t know the wastes.

As the group made their way into the canyon, Boone stayed back. Not wanting to overstep more than Leroy’s request for help already would. The Great Kahn’s hated Boone for his involvement in the Bitter Springs Massacre, and they had harsh feelings towards Leroy for convincing them to leave then putting the NCR in power in Vegas.

The red of the canyon seemed darker to leroy. Maybe it was his guilt over what he’d done. It didn’t matter, he just had to hope there was still someone there with the drugs they needed.

“Hello?” Leroy’s voice bounced off the walls.

The exhaustion was beginning to kick in. His arms could have fallen off but he wouldn’t have cared. He was going to save Jules.

As they reached the entrance of the camp, he saw the signs of a camp ready to move. No signs of the NCR, but the Brahman led caravans were filled with tents and such. Leroy found a rock to lay Jules against. Giving his arms just a moment to relax. He nodded to Izzy, silently asking for them to go find someone to help them.

Izzy understood enough, running ahead towards the caravans. They found someone, a man with spiked hair. Izzy could tell people had been staring at them, he took one last breath running how he was going to ask this stranger for help through his head.

“Excuse me, I’m in a rush. My friend got shot and we need medical help. Anything.”

The stranger turned around, looking over Izzy once, then gesturing to someone nearby. “This one needs help.” He turned to Izzy, “Where’s your friend?”

“Just back up there.” Izzy pointed.

The stranger nodded,  Izzy ran back to the others.

“Someone’s coming to help.”

Jules looked bad, being held by Leroy. Arcade had tied some cloth around Jules’ shoulder. Without their Jacket they couldn’t hide their malnourishment. Two of the people Izzy had found, made their way over with Med-X and Stimpaks.

They saw to Jules, silently. A couple others came over. Leroy was suddenly uncomfortable. He knew Jules was in good hands. Arcade helped out the Khans as best as he could. He could see the tension in the air as Papa Khan walked over, observing Leroy and the rest of them. The wasteland knew about Leroy’s apparent crime, about the death of the young doctor he was travelling with.

Jessup had sorta liked Jules. Nothing romantic, they were just decent company about camp. Someone who knew the right amount of questions to ask. He was hurt when he realised it was Jules who’d died. But there they sat. Not quite dead, definitely not as dead as everyone thought. He watched as his fellow khans helped them back to health.

Roadrunner

Heavy footfall echoed throughout the building. The small group all pushed themselves against the wall, out of site of the stranger stomping around. Leroy had lifted a bandana over his face. Boone pulled his rifle from his back, crouching by the door. Arcade gripped his pistol. ED-E had been given a silencing glare. Izzy gripped their pistol. Jules went to the window, judging the fall from this height.

Outside, a small contingent of men stood. Each sporting a rifle of some kind and pistols. Jules kept themself as out of sight as the men surveyed the ruins around them. She couldn’t deny their strategy, send one man in to clear a building and have the others outside in case anyone happened to be inside and happened to try and do a runner. And if the man never left the building then they had found their bounty.

Yeehawgust 2023 - Day 16

Prairie Fire

The campfire crackled with life as the desert slept. Sat comfortably around the flames, the group had been sharing stories. Jules regaled about how they had helped take down President Eden, a story Leroy, Boone, and Arcade had heard a version of before. Izzy awkwardly discussed the Crimson Raiders, keeping details sparse and refusing to give more than he said. Arcade and Boone both stayed quiet, neither wanting to share their past. Arcade had been surprised at the new pair's willingness to tell tails, though he supposed that they wanted to remember the worlds they apparently came from.

Leroy had been the last to share a story. He’d been hesitant at first. His military stories were dull and the group already knew how the occupation of Vegas was going, along with his involvement in it all. His memory of before joining the NCR military had been patchy at best. He was prepared to settle on not regaleing the group with tales of his life, when a memory surfaced in his mind. One he hated that he’d forgotten.

Yeehawgust 2023 - Day 15

Desert Rose

Izzy held the recorder close, the only part of their echo that was still working at this point, as they examined the flower before them.

A small thing. Vibrant and outlandish against the sea of brown. A delicate thing that had captured his interest. Flowers of such delicacy were rare in deserts. A rose like this was to be documented. The wasteland, in all its harshness, still had something nice to offer. Almost Beautiful.

This small thing of wonder was a few yards away from where they had set up camp for the night, close enough for Izzy to still be in sight of the camp but far enough away that he was alone, and so Izzy decided to complete a voice log for it. Sitting on the dirt, just centimetres from it they started the recorder.

glad that im not popular enough to have an evil shadow version of my blog that exists just to make contradictions on my posts

Dripping Fangs

Documentation of the Flora and Fauna of the Mojave. An echo log.

Cazadors.

A slow death. They should be avoided as best as possible. They’re poisonous. One jab doesn’t just hurt but leaves you with a toxin that could kill you in seconds. Evolved from some form of Wasp, I think. These things are fast. Vibrant orange wings with a bloated dark body.

Jules damned them as a slow death, worse than deathclaws. She’d also muttered something about a Doctor Buros and giving his tank a shake when he made it back to their universe. I wanted to ask, but didn’t want to risk it.

I’m getting off topic. Cazadors are nesting creatures and you never find one alone. Best methods for killing them, distance weapons. Jules made use of their Grenade Rifle. They’re pretty good with that thing. Leroy suggested that fire is the best method for defence against them. I’ve found that anything that does ‘splash damage’ (To use Echo-net game terminology). Melee Weapons should not be used unless you have a large supply of antivenom.

Anatomically they’re as fascinating as many of the other creatures in the wastes. Evolved and adapted to deal with, and potentially because of, the radiation. Cazadors have large bug eyes, small fangs but dangerous stingers. The stingers are huge. Small wings that gave a buzz as the only warning their nearby. The computers, Pipboys, that Leroy and Jules have both have sensors that bring up little red dots on the compass. Both Leroy and Jules can apparently tell on the compass alone when they're going to face a cazador.

We dispatched them without too much difficulty. No cool story for me to regale to you.

The closest parallel I could even slightly draw to them would be Varkids, but it’s not a very good comparison. Cazadors don’t have a projectile venom unlike Varkids, which do. Varkids aren't as annoying.

They’re fascinating, but not the most interesting thing in the wastes.

H is for -- Mr. House

Ahh, good ole Robert House. This really was a blast to explore, another character that I was really excited to write, since I don't tend to very often!

I hope you all like it!

Do Fo4 + NV Companions Play Caravan

Yes, I know Caravan isn't in fallout 4 but I have headcannons as to who plays it. Cause it's got to have travelled with the Caravans.

Fallout New Vegas

  • Cass - She 100% plays caravan. She was a caravaneer for years. She knows how to play and she's good at it. She also bets high on games of Caravan, both her own and other people's. Likes to place bets on who will win.
  • Boone - He knows how to play, he just doesn't care about playing He'd rather be on the lookout rather than playing the card game.
  • Arcade - Again he knows how to play, he's even looked into some strategies for playing. Some of the followers enjoy a good game after dinner. Occasionally he plays, but not very often, it's more of a social event than he's overly comfortable with.
  • Veronica - She didn't start playing till she started scavenging for the Brotherhood out of Trading Post 188. She gets fiercely competitive about it at times. Could go head-to-head with Cass and have a standing chance.
  • Raul - He's had years of experience. Probably helped refine some of the rules used across the Mojave. He traveled a lot and has seen many different renditions of Caravan so sometimes gets rules confused. He's always down for a friendly game to while away the nights on the road.
  • Lily - I can't see her playing caravan. She'd rather tell stories than play a game of caravan on an evening. I have no real justification, but I don't think the folks in Jacobstown really play caravan.

Fallout 4

  • Piper - She knows how to play, she and her sister play it on an evening when Pipers not writing
  • Valentine - He doesn't know how to play but would be willing to learn. He knows people that do play, including Ellie who learnt from a travelling merchant
  • Hancock - He knows how to play, he's very good at it. Preferse the fast-paced games but will play Fahrenheit on occasion
  • Danse - Doesn't know, doesn't want to know. He's never had anyone be willing to teach him. Though I imagine the Brotherhood has a game of a similar nature.
  • Deacon - He's one of the best players in the Commonwealth. He claims to be the one who brought Caravan to the east but no one can confirm this info. When downtime arises, he and Desdemona will play a game. She thinks he cheats
  • X6-88 - Doesn't play. He's never been taught, but if he is taught. He's good at it. Strategy is his thing. He's good at it. He doesn't gloat about it but will challenge Deacon to a game.
  • Preston - He picked it up from a trader and he and the minutemen play it on an evening. The castle has a room with tables and chairs that are only used for card games. He's challenged Ronnie Shaw on more than one occasion and had his ass whipped
  • Curie - She's curious about the game and will watch people play it. She can't get her head around the rules
  • Cait - Doesn't care enough to play. Would rather train than play such a slow-paced game.
  • Codsworth - has a hard time playing due to being a Mister Handy but he understands it. He referees games in Sanctuary
  • Strong - Doesn't care. It doesn't help him find the Milk of Human Kindness
  • MacCready - He's played a few games. He doesn't bet very high, not one to take unnecessary risks. He's good at it. Learnt to play in Goodneighbor. Plays against Daisy on slow nights.
  • Longfellow - A passing stranger to Far Harbour taught him how to play, ain't many people in town who want to play. He doesn't get a chance to play very often. But when he does he's good.
  • Gage - Two of the Traders in NukaWorld were playing and he forced them to teach him. He knows how to play but he's a sore looser. No one in Nuka World wants to play against him.

Yeehawgust 2023 - Day 13

Yee Caw!

The birds circled overhead. Filling the void of the sky with screeches. What dark feathers were there, shone in the high sun. Noon had hit in the Mojave. No cool wind to ease the fighters in the heat. Along this stretch of desert, no one would find them. Far enough away from trade routes to be hidden from the NCR. Three bodies and a fascinating robot, roasting in the Mojave sun, two bodies prepared for battle. The third is an unbiased spectator. And the robot hovered nearby.

Facing each other, Jules and Izzy maintain fierce eye contact. Neither one backed down. Leroy stood off to the side, hands on his hips, hat keeping the sun from his eyes. His revolvers at his side. A steely gaze filled with joy and excitement at the current predicament. He watches the two, their foreheads glistening with sweat. Whether from the heat or the intensity of their situation it was hard to tell.

“You draw on one.” He couldn’t disguise the bright smile or the laugh in his voice.

The birds cawed.

“Three.”

A tumbleweed passed the group.

“Two.”

The pair took a breath. ED-E quietly played an intense soundtrack from a Pre-War western.

“One.”

They drew. Picking the top 8 cards from their decks. Jules kept as straight a face as possible. They were going to go easy on Izzy. Izzy didn’t know Caravan. Jules did. Jules had gotten mighty good at Caravan over the years of travelling. They had a strategy. But so did Izzy.

Izzy lived for strategy games. This one would be fascinating. If he understood the rules, then they could use sabotage to give them an edge. Leroy had handed Izzy his deck. It was stacked with Jacks, Kings, and numbers 5 through 10.

Jules’ deck looked similar, 6s through 10s, minus the 9s with a good number of Kings and Jacks. Leroy had opted not to play, he knew Jules’ strategy. He’d played against her enough to know their strategy. And as he watched, they played exactly as he remembered.

On each of their turns they laid down their highest numbers. Izzy, her hand full of Jacks, took the first opportunity to sabotage Jules' caravan at The Hub.

Jules got back with a full caravan.

All was silent beside the music coming from ED-E, he’d switched to playing New Vegas Radio, and the birds overhead. They seemed to be after company, more than a lust for dead meat.

They kept playing. Game after game. Jules let Izzy win the first game, but the moment they realised Jules was going easy on them, it was game on. Izzy took to Caravan with an intensity neither Jules or Leroy had seen before. Izzy had worked out Jules’ strategy and used it to his advantage.

The missing members of the crew returned. Neither of them cared for Caravan, though were fascinated by how the stranger from a strange land had taken to the simple game.

“How long have they been at it?” Arcade asked as he saddled up towards Leroy, who was observing the game though a bottle of beer, with a great smile on his face.

“How long you been gone?” Leroy replied.

Boone and Arcade had scored them a job, something under the radar, but with enough pay to keep the crew on their feet. But the job could wait until Izzy and Jules had finished their games of Caravan.

I completely gave up on drawing his overly detailed ass this is how you're gonna see me draw him. Sorry not sorry.

Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other

Word Count - 653

Leroy - He/him

Jules - They/she/he

Leroy’s POV

Jules stepped away, leaving me to my watch. Their fear had dissolved, they still held caution around me and the crew but it had lessened over the last few days. As they laid back against the far wall, they looked calm. They looked as my Jules had. Glasses to their side as they rested their head against the wall. Though they were younger than the Jules I knew, their eyes held worlds of experience far beyond anything mine had known. They held the pain of betrayal, abandonment, self loathing. My Jules had softer eyes, once that lit up like the stars when they smiled. And narrowed with concern whenever I got hurt. It's strange how the same gun metal grey eyes can change with experience.

This Jules, who sat against the wall and shared a warped alternate history with me, had seen their world view shattered, repeatedly. What I knew of their story came from my Jules. Their stories would be different, I couldn’t doubt it. This Jules was younger, by maybe four years. It was hard to tell exactly. He was better spoken than my Jules had ever been. Bedside Manners had never been her strong suit, but she could match me in a gunfight. They even helped take down Lanius, not that the NCR gave them any recognition for it.

“From where you're kneeling it must seem like an 18-carat run of bad luck. Truth is... the game was rigged from the start.” 💥
