My almost all AshEiji during 2020 This year was tough I barely draw a lot like the previous years however i am glad this journey is coming to its end 😊 I had so much fun drawing too much asheiji and through doing that i met a lot of wonderful people and friends who kept encouraging me all this time 🥺 if it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t be at where i am now

Sometimes i wonder why i, an adult, love high school dramas/comedies so much but it's simply cos you see yourself in it. I'm really still a kid trying to figure ouy my life and the weird drama that happens to me. I still need parents, loved ones and friends to help me at times. These TV shows are a heightened version of real life where everything means so much to the teenagers and even if the characters overall story is not much like your own there is still something that'll resonate

“and while everyone else is moving on, i remain standing in the same place—alone. isolated from everyone else in the world.”

A few years back, a really amazing girl came into my life. My daughter Ellie. She is the best thing that ever happened to an idiot like me.

Op director Tamura Koutarou

At the end of the OP ADAM was holding a cigarette, but is there anything special about the way he smokes?

Tamura: I think he's smoking in a cool way like a villain. Nowadays there aren't many characters who smoke at all. It causes all sorts of problems on the production side since we have to make modifications when we release them overseas and smokers are feeling ashamed in real life too. Rather than how they smoke, I think now just the fact they smoke at all makes them stand out. When I used to watch anime as a fan was back in the 90s, I feel like there were a lot of adult characters who smoked at that time. But now in the 2020s when a character smokes they don't just seem like a delinquent, they are the type of characters who have a pessimistic view on life or are actual criminals. I think there is that generational gap in people's views on it, but that's exactly why ADAM smoking is so like him.

So ADAM smoking was used to represent that he's an adult and eccentric?

Tamura: That's right. In the past it was used a lot as a sign of adulthood, but now adults don't smoke anymore either. So I don't really think it's meant to show adulthood in this case as much as to give the impression that he's rejecting society. And from a directorial standpoint, using cigarettes makes it easy to hide their mouths. When you can't see their expression I think it gives off a mysterious feeling.

So characters that smoke are mysterious?

Tamura: It has the same effect as having their hands in their pockets. Since having their hands in their pockets is used to represent that they want to hide how they feel from people. I think that smoking is something close to that. For ADAM in the OP,  the cigarette smoke surrounds him forming a mist in the air so it's hard to see him. I think that probably represents that he hides his true feelings too.
