this is why you should care about the reddit strike

No.

This is why you should be pissed that all the forums disappeared to be replaced with fucking sub-reddits :/

This is why you should have fucking hated reddit from day fucking one. Having on company establish a near monopoly on hosting forums is BAD FOR BUSINESS for all of us.

I mean think about it. Some old-style niche forums went on for decades just paying the server costs with donations from a very interested and motivated user base, but le reddit has to be profitable.

It's simply too large to exist otherwise.

And I can't support a website that hosts violent misogyny, forums by and for men sharing stolen pictures and videos of women or discussing how sexy it is when women throw up, cry or pass out during porn. A website that also heavily censors women and especially feminists, deleting entire forums made by women, because ultimately it's men who own everything and decide what "practical knowledge and advice" are allowed on it.

We should go back to actually making forums ourselves.

Seeing the video of the two hong kong women being killed is so frightening and disturbing. I just feel so much pain for these women. I started to feel like i could come out, but now i don't want to. It scares me that there's still so much misogyny and lesbian hatred in this world. I'm 18 and i'm going to a religious college and i just wonder how accepting these people are gonna be. i'm just so nervous and ashamed

i havent seen the video but i’ve read the story. here they are:

rest in peace Fang Xiaotong and Liu Jixi… they faced extreme lesbophobic violence and were stabbed recently for daring to be a visibly lesbian couple at a mall.

the lesbophobe targeted fang xiaotong first, likely because she’s visibly gender non-conforming and liu jixi tried to stop him & protect fang xiaotong.. they both got stabbed repeatedly and were killed in this attack

on top of this, they’re now censoring that they were a couple in the media and are trying to pass them off as just two friends that were killed. not only that, but they’re arguing the murderer is just mentally ill, saying it was just a random attack rather than a lesbophobic one, and otherwise trying to garner sympathy for him.

two women were killed due to lesbophobia and lesbophobic hate crimes are made invisible once again, meanwhile most people will just think it was a random attack on two friends and continue to downplay lesbophobia.

further story for those interested.

i encourage to share the story but i don’t advise to view the video of their killing. in multiple east asian cultures, there is a taboo around dead bodies and the depiction of them. i won’t watch the video out of respect for them, others have already verified that it clearly shows a targeted lesbophobic attack and that’s enough for me.

omg imagine being born and you are on a spaceship and everyone aboard is sooo so mad at you just because you burst out of some guy's chest to be born. like um sorry i've not been alive before i didn't even know that's not allowed please be nice to me um the spaceship floor is cold is no one going to knit me some little booties i am calling child protective services

“Mean girls all grow up to be nurses!”

“Mean girls all go into social work!”

“The mean girl to teacher pipeline!”

Y’all, these are just pink collar jobs. The reason you think there’s so many “mean girls” in these fields is because they’re all like 97% women. Of course some of them are gonna be assholes. There’s assholes everywhere.

We get it. Your job isn’t like other girls’ jobs. It’s a cool job.

it’s true that there are some incredibly cruel people in all of these professions.

it’s also true that they all suffer from chronic underpayment, overwork, lack of institutional support, and insane bureaucratic demands that would make them fail the people in their care all the time even if every single one was a saint.

That’s absolutely missing the point.

While those are all “helper” professions and they very much are pink collar (and are underpaid, that’s not an incompatible idea), they’re also ones that involve power over vulnerable people’s lives. (And I’ve only encountered it as a comparison to, say, male bullies becoming cops, it’s not like men aren’t being mentioned here.)

Secretaries/administrative assistants aren’t on that list for a reason. Flight attendants aren’t on that list. Housecleaners aren’t on that list. Receptionists. Customer service representatives. Dental hygienists. The people who style hair or do nails. That’s not a list of pink collar jobs. It’s specifically (pink collar) positions where if you want to abuse people you’re relatively likely to get away with it.

It can both be true that “nurses who care for disabled people need better pay” and “nurses who care for disabled people have a lot of opportunities to abuse their power and that’s something worth talking about.”

Women aren’t immune from treating people badly because they’re women, or because women are underpaid. They’re sure not immune from specifically seeking out jobs that will allow them to be cruel without any consequences to them, if they get personal satisfaction out of being cruel.

You are trying to shut down a conversation about abuse.

Shitty people are attracted to positions of power. That includes working class women!

There have been a lot of studies about hazing and abuse in nursing communities and even murder!

My mother is a nurse, her co-workers sit around laughing about the people who fall out of their wheel chairs, about the nurses who do cry when someone dies, my mother has ignored patients crying out in pain in order to drink her coffee.

My mother has intentionally let elderly patients at her nursing home die. She has abused them and she has laughed about it. She has left people suffering and has caused that suffering.

Nurses are underpaid and they are disrespected as medical professionals who aren’t a doctor. That’s true and we should talk about that, but we can not ignore the fact that violent women seek out these jobs with God Complexes and the intent to do harm.

Sure, that harm might be because they are bitter, over-worked, and disrespected. None the less, it is no different than when a male doctor causes purposeful harm to his patient.

Nurses contribute to eugenics, to patient abuse, elder abuse, and yeah even child abuse (my mother was proficient in all of them!)

Here are some important articles to read:

Nurses Eat Their Young An article about hazing and bullying among nurses. The title comes from a common saying in medical circles, the first time I heard it, it was in reference to my mother’s best friend who had poured coffee over the hands of a new nurse who had reported another nurse to a superior for abusing a patient.

Every single one of these articles, with exception of the last – which is guardian article – is a professionally published medical article.

And as always, my stance is going to be, “If you can’t do your job without abusing people, quit your job.”

mothers are portrayed as stupid and reactionary and overprotective for caring about things being a bad influence on children but they were absolutely fucking right. video games might not make kids violent but gamers are some of the most entitled and misogynistic nazi shitheads on the planet. music might not be satanic but the rockers are the the most violent, drug addled maniacs you can imagine, plus they tried to recreate woodstock in 1999 and it was a violent disaster. mothers might be misguided but women always have an intuition for what's likely to make men worse human beings, it doesn't take much of a cultural shift for men to become literal menaces to society

I wrote this in a rush and regret it because I really want to rephrase one part: women do not have an 'intuition' - women have pattern-matching skills and a strong emotional investment in both what happens to their children and what will make men more violent (for obvious reasons!)

Also it doesnt take a detective to work out that your 12 year old son screaming slurs on xbox live probably needs to cut down on his gaming time a little bit

the story of the four colombian children that survived over a month in the jungle after surviving a plane crash is incredible. their mother initially survived the crash, but was fatally injured, and as she was dying, she told them to leave her so that they may live. the eldest child, a 13 year old girl, is who kept the younger siblings alive, having both knowledge of edible jungle plants, as well as scavenging the wreckage, knowing how to take care of an infant (yes, the youngest was an 11-12 month old baby), and also had a hobby of playing 'survival games' with her 9 year old sister, where they would built make-shift shelters outside for fun. they were finally rescued several days ago, in large part because the search helicopters continuously played a recording of their grandmother, telling them to stay where they are in their native language.

so, three generations of women and girls, grandmother, mother, and daughter, all contributed to the group's survival. they are malnourished and dehydrated, but apart from that, fine physically. they will be out of hospital in little over a week (excluding perhaps the baby).

what "funerary rituals" indicate being female???

Very interesting considering how we are now discovering that many warriors across various cultures were actually female because for decades archaeologists just assumed that they couldn't be women because they were buried with weapons and spoils and clearly only men can fight (X, X)

how can ppl say cats are heartless tbh

I once stayed at a game reserve in South Africa, and they had three cheetahs – two males and one female. The boys stuck together (they were brothers), but female cheetahs are solitary, save for when they are raising cubs. Which is hard work for cheetahs, because they don’t/can’t den, she’s working constantly to protect/move her cubs, as well as feeding both them and herself.

Now, these cheetahs ARE in a private reserve, but they’re still essentially wild. But they are more or less accustomed to the presence of people. And this cheetah, Ketswiri, got very badly injured in her leg one time, which usually would be fatal to a cheetah. The staff at the reserve helped her. Another time, she was starving, and they provided her a fresh antelope carcass. And she remembered this, because the science officer was telling us how one time he was watching Ketswiri and her cubs, and she wandered over and dumped all her cubs at his feet, and walked off. Like “watch my kids, I need some me time.” And he was panicking like COME BACK I CAN’T BABYSIT YOUR KIDS WTF

Half of the comments are about cats giving birth on top of or next to their owners and I’m not crying at all

it’s so funny though because domesticated cats are aggressively social in raising their young so basically op’s cat was like bitch these are your kids too, where tf you think you’re going???

As a person with cats who has given birth, they are also this way about *your* kids. My cat spent my whole pregnancy snuggled up to me, and then as soon as my daughter was born, he was always where she was. He was super protective of her when new people came over. Whenever we had to take her out for a doctor’s appointment, he waited by the door and sniffed her carseat when we brought her back. Cats are intensely social and it’s so wonderful 🥰

[image description: comment by Nassim B.: “I had a cat that used to sleep with me, and once she had given birth to 4 kittens, she brought them to me at night to bed, so I got scared to smash them by accident and went to sleep downstairs in the living room, after 10 mins she comes to sleep with me, then goes upstairs and bring her kittens one by one…. can we call that trust?”]

Am I the only one who thinks that hitting a kid and abuse are different things? Like, if I ever had a kid, I wouldn’t spank their ass raw or something like that. But a bop on the mouth or the ear pull or a smack upside the head? Yea. Those are behavior modifiers.

Except they’re not.

The studies done by the trained psychologists in this joke show that little kids don’t associate being hit with the thing they’ve done wrong. Very small children only understand consequences that are directly caused by the thing they did. Steal a biscuit, biscuit tastes good. Then for no reason mummy hit me. Very different to stole a biscuit, now no biscuit after dinner because I stole a biscuit.

And they also show that when a child is old enough to understand why they are being hit that non-physical punishment is equally as effective and less mentally harmful in the long run.

Do you know who benefits the most from hitting as a punishment? The parent. It gives a satisfaction rush. Parents do it because it makes them feel good.

Basically kids have two stages: too young to understand why they are being hit so physical punishment is useless for anything other than teaching a child that bigger stronger people can hit you whenever they like (Which sounds like the same lesson you would learn from abuse)

And the second stage is old enough to be reasoned with so many punishment options are available and you chose physical violence because it makes *you* feel better, which is an abusive action.

The only time a person should ever use violence against another human being, of any age, is to stop that person from being violent themselves.

Hitting a stranger is a crime. Hitting someone small who relies on you for food, love, and shelter should be as well. Don’t hit your fucking kid.

i dont think you can grow from being a predator lol. yes when you are a predator you are stuck that way for the rest of your life. you will live and die that way.

you are your mistakes as soon as you decide to rape someone.you are your mistakes as soon as you decide to prey on someone you KNOW is easy to manipulate. "you are your mistakes" is EXACTLY what im saying! like yeah! i dont care that your fave guy who was in his 30s never dated a teenage girl again!!!!!!!! he is a FREAK and he will LIVE AND DIE THAT WAY.

Monsters don't get rehabilitated into becoming good people. They just become sneakier monsters.

parents are so crazy because they can say the most fucked up shit to you when your brain is forming and it sets the tone for your whole adult mind set and then they forget about it the next day
