Ok, here’s a weird thought: the more absurdly high the stakes are in dragonball, the less tension there really is.

Because like, IF the only stakes for this universe tournament were “winner gets a wish ”, then fuck it. I could see goku actually losing. I would genuinely not know how things would go. I mean, it’d be possible.

But because its like “ALL LOSERS WILL HAVE THEIR WHOLE UNIVERSE DESTROYED” i already know the ending. Goku wins and then tells zen oh that he has to spare all the universes or else they can never have another tournament. And zen oh had so much, so he will listen.

Theres like, no other possible ending that is consistent with publication needs and tone consistency.

High stakes do not equal better stories.

It makes me feel like, i don’t know, the tournament is not going to be the actual plot but spmething else. 

Like, i don’t know, mid-tournament it is revealed that a bunch of the contestants united against Zen’o because they want to save ALL the universes but that makes things worse somehow and the rest of the arc is Goku and everyone working together to stop this mess.

Hmmm like some kinda coup? That could at least be more interesting
