I know that a lot of people really like ASMR; I don’t. For me, it is one of the worst sensations I know of. I think this is a sensory issue that I have. So, I’m curious, do other autistic people find ASMR to be a bad sensory thing? Is this common? Is this an autism thing, or a me thing? Is this just one of the many variations in human experiences and has no real relation to anything like having blue eyes instead of brown, or preferring caramel flavouring to strawberry flavouring?

I don’t like ASMR at all, it gives me a bad sensory feeling!

Well, the notes and tags on this post have told me two important things:

1) I am absolutely not alone in finding ASMR (audio) to be a sensory bad (to elaborate on my own feelings with regards to this: my response is a visceral, deep, repulsion that may involve aggressively removing the source of the sensory input - i.e., I strongly advise against whispering in my ear unless you want to risk being hit/shoved away) 2) There is apparently visual ASMR too, not just auditory - this seems to have a higher correlation to being good sensory input

Some other interesting things the notes and tags have told me:

Most of our issues with ASMR seem to relate specifically to the audio, while many still find the visuals to be good or even stimmy (I hadn’t considered this factor before, and I agree, many of the visual aspects are Good)

For some of us, it is entirely conditional (e.g., the person saying that they hate it if it doesn’t have a purpose, but that if it has a purpose it’s fine) Keep commenting/reblogging y’all, this is pretty interesting

I hate ASMR too. I’ve had it since I was a kid. I mostly feel it in my lower back on the right side, and it’s extremely uncomfortable. I actually didn’t even know there was a name for it until yesterday.

Pokemon Go Boycott

On 10/28/18 please do not open any games run by Niantic or spend any money in support of them. They are supporting a group that is well known for abusing autistic people. So please join me as I boycott one of my biggest Special interests.

This goes for all teachers and principals. Please if you have an autistic student in your class do NOT force them to make eye contact with you. Eye contact can be incredibly painful, uncomfortable and stressful for autistic people. If you think we’re not listening to you just because we’re not looking you in the eyes then you’re wrong. It’s actually much easier for us to listen when we’re not having to look you in the eyes. I think anyone should be able to understand how challenging it is to process information when you’re in pain and discomfort. From my own experiences I can only process what people are saying if I’m looking away from them, I can’t even hear what people are saying if I’m looking them in the eyes.
