I can’t explain it, but earth 1610 miles is the type of autistic that stares at a person’s nose/mouth and has learned that counts as “eye contact”, and earth 42 miles is the type of autistic that has learned to stare at one pupil and thinks that’s what “making eye contact” is.

I talked about this in another post but something SO VISUALLY INTERESTING I realized about Hobie's final scene in ATSV.

Beginning with Miles' line 'My dad is about to be captain.'

The group - Gwen, Jess, Peter, and Hobie are all standing behind Miles as he faces Miguel.

But from this point forward, every time Hobie is portrayed, he is shown as separate from the other characters, always being divided from the group - with Miles as the divider.

Even as the camera moves and more Spider-people join the scene, Hobie visually remains - quite literally - as the only person in Miles' corner. And as the scene goes on, he moves farther and farther into that corner.

Until finally the scene comes to a climax, and Hobie gets two shots to himself - delivering his final lines.

"Here we go." - "Hobie, You're not helping." - "Good."

This is Hobie seeing his work pay off. This is him knowing that he got through to Miles and that it was worth it. He's proud of him.

When he says ‘Good,’ he’s not looking at Jess. Because he’s not talking to her, not really. He’s looking to Miles. He’s telling him this is good.

For the entirety of the scene leading up to Miles being trapped, Hobie is shown as the only one literally on Miles' side, until finally in the last moments he is the only one to help Miles escape when he truly needs it.

Even in his final moments on screen the art team decided to show us that Hobie is the realest one in the room thats SO FUCKING CLEVER.

Fanart for this fic!!!

Beacuse when i read:

"Hobie spoke about how the government held total control, about how anarchy was about taking back control, saying “fuck you” to the rules. He had control, easily, and it seemed Miles unknowingly leaned into the control that Hobie radiated.

Hobie left Miles with individuality and the ability to take back his control, but that didn’t mean that Hobie would forget the rest of the Spider Society’s unforgivable transgressions against Miles Morales.

Control was funny like that, Miles had it and Hobie defended it."

I giggle like a fucking idiot

Hey i know a lot of fics and posts make Hobie out to be a cool chill laid back kinda guy but uhhh

Need i remind you homeboy also lived/lives under a fascist regime and police state.

That has an emotional effect!

Like he’s a black man who fights with cops head on routinely.

He probably knows police brutality more than anyone and that can fuck anyone up

You can’t tell me that doesn’t have an effect and i feel like that’s a character trait that’s REALLY overlooked in Hobie. Which sucks because his punk ideology and activism is one of the most interesting things about him YA’LL

Can we PLEASE acknowledge the trauma of the black guy whose literal job is to put fascists to sleep

Can we PLEASE talk about how living under a police state mentally effects Hobie Brown and how he’d carry that trauma PLEASE

He’s not just some punk cool chill big brother he’s also a black kid growing up under a police state who puts on a mask every night to fight for his right to exist as he is DO YOU REALIZE HOW POWERFUL THAT IS - IT’S THE REASON HE DOES EVERYTHING HE DOES

Ayo shout out to the ATSV writing team for understanding punk not just as an aesthetic but a genuine and legitimate movement and moral standing

Hobies anti-establishment and anti-fascists quips are not a joke. They’re not background fodder. He means them, and the first chance he’s given to display this, he does!

Hobie doesn’t need to know Miles to know that the system is unfairly stacked against him. He doesn’t need to be convinced, because Hobie’s ideology is to always back the underdog, no matter what.

The writers understood punk, not just its music or its style or its roots - they understood that at its very core being a punk is about upending every and all unfair systems you encounter, through compassion and direct action.

The advice about using his palms, the egging Miles on, the quitting at the best moment, and leaving his watch to Gwen - all of it is the most punk shit Hobie could do and he did it

The writers understood the assignment, Hollywood run them their checks

Something REALLY interesting about this scene

At the beginning of the scene Miles confronts Gwen about the 'small elite strike-team' comment.

Gwen lies and plays it off, saying that most of them are part-time anyway.

IMMEDIATELY after that in the next line dialogue, Hobie confronts Gwen and asks her 'Gwendy, how much have you told him about his place in all this? - Maybe not enough.'

Hobie is expressioning disappointment towards Gwen. He doesn't approve of her lying to Miles, knowing what's gonna happen to him. He doesn't agree with them keeping him in the dark - which is why later in the scene he says

'I haven't gotten a Scooby Doo, mate. But that's what they want.'

He's warning Miles that they're keeping in him the dark, on purpose.

ONCE AGAIN Hobie showing foward thinking and outwardly disapproving of the obviously unfair treatment that Miles is given. He's not angry at Gwen, but he's willing to tell her straight up that she's not doing or telling Miles enough to protect him.

Miles deserved to know Miguel's motives BEFORE meeting him. That's why he pointed it out then.

He's ALWAYS looking out for Miles

Frankly some of you should be hornier over weirder shit. The fear of being too genuine is the enemy of art. Be a bit of a pervert. It's good for the health. Doesn't have to be a sexual thing just own up to being a bit obsessed in some cringe shit it's fine.

to me big smiles are so synonymous with horror that fails to be scary that i think if you put me in a creepy room saw-style with a blood splattered smiley face on the wall i would calm down a bit. because it indicates a person trying too hard to be sickos and scary. it's a bit of a cutiepie trait. but if it was a blood splattered frowny face i'd get scared because then i know they mean business

more insight on miles’ puerto rican heritage for your fics or fanart

- traditional quinceañeras (or as they are often called by puerto ricans quinceañeros) are really not that common anymore, most girls nowadays have pool parties or go on a cruise. if miles were to go to one of his cousins’ 15 birthday party, chances are it would be casual— no big poofy dress (his mom probably had one like that though)

- plantains are a big part of our diet. also, pr being an island in the caribbean, coconut is in a lot of our desserts. if miles had to pick a favorite fruit I hc he’d pick either one of the two lol also please google our food, our food isn’t actually spicy so much as savory

- we “celebrate” thanksgiving like other americans. it’s about the only time we eat oven roasted turkey. for winter holidays (christmas eve/day, new years eve/day, three kings day/eve) oven roasted pork. chicken might be offered as a second option for people who don’t consume pork for whatever reason

- you’re pretty much taught how to dance as soon as you can walk. most of us have basic rhythms down. chances of miles dancing with his mom or friends at parties? astronomically high.

- the reason why our flag is everywhere, besides pride, is ‘cause it was illegal to own it. look up the gag law that prohibited us from even displaying it at our homes. so it’s actually an awesome detail in these movies

- this is my opinion/a fun fact but I feel like miles is basically an homage to black and puerto rican (specifically nuyorican) solidarity around the 70s-80s during the creation of hip-hop and rise of graffiti as a form of expression (you can easily read up on this or watch shows like the get down to learn more about this if you’re curious)

- whether you’re “nuyorican” or “from the island” spanglish is common so miles’ mixing english and spanish isn’t odd bc even rio does this as miles points out in the party scene. he isn’t a “no sabo” kid so much as someone with a strong accent. he understands his mom perfectly

- race ≠ ethnicity. there are plenty of black people in and from Puerto Rico, and miles’ pr family in the spiderverse films are designed to be for the most part afro-latine. so I wouldn’t really call him biracial

- the puerto rican day parade wouldn’t be a thing he skips, he’s gifted a special suit for it in a comic run. his puerto rican heritage is important to him!

"An Aunt May Seminar: So Your Kid Is Spiderman"

She also has an upcoming seminar called "A close friend is actually a backstabbing villain who tried to destroy your kid: How to let go of toxic people in your life."

Extremely funny to me that Lord Byron & Percy Shelley both really hated Castlereagh but Shelley’s way of expressing it was writing an epic poem depicting Castlereagh as the personification of death wearing a metaphorical bloody mask & being followed by hounds which he feeds human hearts while Byron just went LMAO pissing on his grave
