I'm a little dysfunctional 🌞

“I want a dyke for president.  I want a person with AIDS for president and I want a fag for vice president and I want someone with no health insurance and I want someone who grew up in a place where the earth is so saturated with toxic waste that they didn’t have a choice about getting leukemia.  I want a president that had an abortion at sixteen and I want a candidate who isn’t the lesser of two evils and I want a president who lost their last lover to AIDS, who still sees that in their eyes every time they lay down to rest, who held their lover in their arms and knew they were dying. I want a president with no air-conditioning, a president who has stood in line at the clinic, at the DMV, at the welfare office, and has been unemployed and laid off and sexually harassed and gaybashed and deported.  I want someone who has spent the night in the tombs and had a cross burned on their lawn and survived rape.  I want someone who has been in love and been hurt, who respects sex, who has made mistakes and learned from them.  I want a Black woman for president.  I want someone with bad teeth and an attitude, someone who has eaten that nasty hospital food, someone who crossdresses and has done drugs and been in therapy.  I want someone who has committed civil disobedience.  And I want to know why this isn’t possible.  I want to know why we started learning somewhere down the line that a president is always a clown.  Always a john and never a hooker.  Always a boss and never a worker.  Always a liar, always a thief, and never caught.”

Zoe Leonard, 1992

Being suicidal doesn't necessarily mean you're holding a gun to your head.

Sometimes, it means smoking a cigarette in the hopes that you’ll get cancer and die. Or jaywalking across the street without looking, because you don’t care if you get hit by a car. Sometimes it means having sex with a stranger, hoping you’ll get an STD and die. Or not sleeping and not eating in the hopes that the exhaustion will kill you. Or even not washing your hands in the hopes that you’ll get sick and die. Sometimes it means being cruel to the people you love or ignoring them, because if they leave you’ll have less reason to go on living. Or not setting your alarm for work, so you’ll get fired and have less of a purpose. Sometimes it means partying hard in the hopes that your liver will fail and you’ll die. Or putting yourself in dangerous and potentially painful situations, so maybe it’ll be the last straw. Being suicidal doesn’t necessarily mean trying to die. A lot of times, it means not putting any effort into living.

This fucked me up…

Not even “in hope” that you die. But just simply that you don’t care if it happens.

I don’t think people realize how often suicidal people present like this. and how much they’re struggling and need help. I was like this for years before I tried anything lethal.

Nope. No way. The biggest Halloween shop in the U.S. is trying to sell a costume that makes fun of transgender celebrity Caitlyn Jenner. Spirit Halloween needs to know trans people are not a costume, and trans people are not a joke.

Caitlyn coming out was a huge deal this year – she gave millions of people a greater understanding of what it’s like to be trans. But prejudice and violence against transgender people are rampant. By selling a “Call Me Caitlyn” costume, Spirit Halloween will be cashing in on this bigotry.

Sign this and tell them it’s got to go: go.allout.org/en/a/caitlyn-spirit

(And yes, Halloween is fun! But if the model shown here with the costume is any indication, this is not a fun costume for trans people on Halloween night.)

Societal norms dictate that men should be masculine are powerful. And new University of Washington research finds that men who believe they fall short of those ideals might be prompted to reassert their masculinity in small but significant ways. The study found that male college students who were given falsely low results on a handgrip strength test exaggerated their height by three-quarters of an inch on average, reported having more romantic relationships, claimed to be more aggressive and athletic, and showed less interest in stereotypically feminine consumer products. By contrast, men who received average score results, and whose masculinity was therefore not threatened, did not exaggerate those characteristics. The findings, researchers say, underscore the pressure men feel to live up to gender stereotypes and the ways in which they might reinstate a threatened masculinity.
The sexualization of girls and the infantilization of adult women are two sides of the same coin. They both tell us that we should find youth, inexperience, and naivete sexy in women, but not in men. This reinforces a power and status difference between men and women, where vulnerability, weakness, and dependency and their opposites are gendered traits: desirable in one sex but not the other.
