If there was a way to run SUPER MEGA AD BLOCKER on this website I fucking would
“Please oh please open up your computer to a porn virus! If you don’t you’re evil!”
Freeloader Comin’ through!
We didn’t start this war internet users have with ads - We might have moaned about banner ads, but it was only when they started making noises when we might be listening to music or a podcast or whatever, causing two sound sorces at once, that we started trying to block ads universally rather than just a specific type of ad (pop ups).
And since then ads have gotten worse - Actual malware rather than merely breaking one of the fundamental sins of web design - though shalt not autoplay anything with sound. And the more aggressive a website is with ‘please turn off adblock’ the less I trust it to bother to vet ads and advertisers to make sure they’re not installing malware.
Not to mention that the idea that avoiding ads is “freeloading” is hilariously backward. Advertisement is a transaction between the platform and the advertiser, the user has no obligation to provide the views/clicks the platform has promised. Using an adblocker isn’t freeloading in the same way that leaving the room to get a snack during a commercial break isn’t cheating the tv network.
Ok y’all, I work as a web developer and I’m here to tell you that you are 100% right and that it’s shit. SO I’m going to tell you how to get around websites that block you from using their website if you’re using an adblocker.
Every website uses a language called JavaScript; long story short it’s a website language that allows developers to do the crazy shit you see on websites. Now the easiest thing to do is to disable JavaScript to stop them from knowing you have an adblocker:
Oh no! I’m blocked from viewing the website. It would be a terrible shame if I were able to right click and select the “inspect” feature
Click the three dots in the top right and open the “Settings” Menu
And then scrolled down to “Debugger” and checked the “Disable Javascript Option”
And then just refreshed the page

it would be kinda cool if hollywood being shut down had the side effect (besides hopefully getting everyone better working conditions ofc) of getting some non US movies and shows a bit more of a platform again outside the US, cause why the fuck is there like mostly only hollywood in much of the world, i love the chokehold US imperialism has on pop culture, it's great
this also goes out to everyone being like "waaahh there will be NO MOVIES and NO SHOWS what am i going to WATCH" like girlie, this is a US strike, u have a whole worlds worth of rly fucking good entertainment to watch. ur missing out, get out of ur comfort zone, watch some weird ass local european movie with questionable subs, go watch that thai tv drama, this is the perfect excuse to check out anime if uve considered it "cringe" so far, there is the whole world of bollywood too! and there is so much shit i dont even know about thats out there just waiting for you to watch it and blorbofy!
Honestly “thanks I hate it” is one of the funniest phrases in the English language
i one time told my italian professor “grazie lo detesto” and she lost her shit, so it’s not just english

“Danke, ich hasse es.”
“Merci, je déteste”

WHAT?!
I study graphic design and my tutor recommended and used this in his classes at art college last year, it’s so good it has SO many features for free, I really recommend it, even if you’re just trying to learn the basics of PS, such a wonderful thing <3
I’m trying not to be a huge dick about it but I got a “but what about us q-slurs who are traumatized by the bad words?” on my slur reclaimation post and so I’ve made a handy guide
1. You are being called the slur.
A. If it is with malice, I am sorry for this experience, however, this situation is not at all what I was talking about.
B. If it is with affection or as a joke from other LGBTs, and it makes you uncomfortable, ask them to stop. If they don’t, they’re a dick for not respecting your boundaries.
2. You are being “forced” to see other people use the word for a larger community
A. If it bothers you then you are probably not the “fag community” to which they are referring, then. In a post? Block. Blacklist words. Block tags. Walk away. Avert your eyes. You don’t vibe with “queer community” then refer to it as LGBT. You make it sound like a “someone saying Happy Holidays means I can’t say Merry Christmas anymore” situation. You don’t have to use any words you don’t vibe with. Hate to say Dyke March or Dykes on Bikes? Don’t go to the march. Avoid the bikes.
3. You are being “forced” to hear other people use the word for themselves
A. I mean this with love and respect…suck it up. If it is so deeply triggering, remove yourself. Leave the situation. Block. Blacklist words. Block tags.
In a conversation about reclaimation, I am sorry, but you only get to decide how people refer to you, no one else. If someone else’s use upsets you, YOU have to do something about it, not them. You do not, under ANY circumstances, get to ask someone not to use dyke or fag or queer or tranny for themselves. You don’t get to ask someone not to use it/its. You don’t get to tell someone to tuck or bind because it gives you second-hand dysphoria. You do not get to decide how someone else is queer.
If being around them is that debilitating, you need to take steps to insulate yourself.
On the curate your own experience website, you should know how to do just that. There are so many guides out there. And to the complaint that “now” Pride uses all these slurs which has made Pride hostile to you, I’d invite you to crack open a book, but perhaps what you find will be too upsetting

[ID: 3 photos of old marches and protests. The first shows people marching, holding up a banner that says, “queer nation: get used to it."
In the second photo, people are holding handmade signs that say, “cocksuckers for muffdivers”, “go girls go," “we like dykes," and “fags in support of dykes."
The third photo shows many people holding a large black and pink banner that says, “international dyke march, NY, 25 June 1994." End ID.]
hey, hi, I was just on the former bird app and came across this info from a brand new study and now I cannot stop screaming internally??? what the actual fuckkkk

Feather illustration for non-biologists! It occurred to me that some of you might find this useful. It starts with a necessary biology lesson, because I find that understanding the structure and function of feathers will greatly improve accurate rendering of those feathers.
A lot of this is general - obviously you can find all kinds of exceptions in the natural world (penguins, ratites, I’m looking at you guys). But it should cover the bulk of the illustration needs if you’re not comfortable drawing feathers and want some ideas on how to improve.
For photo references, I highly recommend birdpixel (a very generous online art reference created by Leena and Vivek Khanzode), Cornell’s Macaulay Library, and Piranga, which is mostly aimed at North American bird banders but shows excellent close-ups of a variety of species.

MATHBLR.
HELP ME.
I’ve been HOMESCHOOLED all my life which has been the only option really for my family for a number of reasons. As a consequence I have only really learned bare bones basic math that I need to survive.
My mom thinks I could have been a math genius if my dad wasn’t a ~deadbeat father~ and gave up on me so help me and her out a little? Jus a wee bit??
I’m going to College. And by that I mean I am finishing up a gap year because I. Uh. I got really sick. And I’m still really sick but Yknow how it is. ANYWAYS I might not pass the Basic Math Classes so that I can. Yknow. Get my degree. Help me. Is there any like, video series or website or place online that explains math and helps you learn math but isn’t annoying because it feels like someone is talking down to you?? Because I’m tired of feeling like I’m stupid for not knowing this,,,, I also am broke so I can’t purchase a two hundred dollar textbook,, please I’m stuck I dunno what to dooooo
Please note I have dyscalcula
Oh boy, my time has come. These are all resources which I recommend to college students who need some assistance or review to help with their required math classes.
Paul's Online Notes: Comprehensive notes for algebra, calculus I-III, and differential equations courses. Also includes some additional cheat sheets and review sheets. These are very accessible and won't assume much prior knowledge beyond the typical prerequisite classes for each course. https://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/
S.O.S. Mathematics: Review material for topics from algebra on through differential equations. These are great if you have a specific topic you need to refresh your memory on. http://www.sosmath.com/
PhET Interactive Simulations: These aren't usually ideal for beginning with a concept, but they are fantastic tools for better understanding how various concepts work, especially if you prefer visual or interactive learning methods. They are also useful for improving your intuitive sense of a concept that doesn't come naturally to you. I definitely recommend at least looking at what they have available, so you can come back to them if you are having trouble with a specific concept. The trig tour and the various graphing ones are particularly helpful, in my opinion. The site also includes physics, chemistry, and biology simulations, if those are of interest. https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/category/math/mathconcepts
OpenStax: A catalogue of free, open-source textbooks. Includes books for pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus I-III, and various statistics courses. Some of those books are also available in Spanish. https://openstax.org/subjects/math
KhanAcademy: This has already been mentioned multiple times by other people on this post, and for good reason. KhanAcademy is great if you prefer video material (although it should be noted they don't only offer videos). Of the resources on this list, KhanAcademy will give you an experience closest to a traditional class progression (albeit not in a traditional format), but many of their lessons and articles will also work standalone if you only need to cover a particular topic. They have material on everything from elementary school mathematics through calculus, multivariate calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra. https://www.khanacademy.org/
Honorable Mention
Desmos Online Graphing Calculator: This isn't a review website, but it is a great resource. Desmos' calculator has an easy-to-understand interface and neat visuals. You can use it to graph various equations and compare the graphs of various equations. The tool which lets you adjust the value of a constant by dragging a slider is particularly useful for visualization. There is also a good set of example graphs which you can view and play around with. https://www.desmos.com/calculator
Reblogging in case @ms-demeanor has recommendations for dyscalculia specifically
I unfortunately was not able to find good resources for adults with dyscalculia however I have to recommend The Organic Chemistry Tutor on YouTube - every time I was having trouble with a concept I searched and one of his videos came up and explained things in a way that made a lot of sense.
In terms of dyscalculia: get a documented diagnosis of your learning disability and contact your school's disability office. Inform your professors. Ask for resources and accommodations. You may be able to ask for an aide who can read equations to you or for extra time in tests or questions with the numbers written or marked differently - there are tools that your school will have to help you, but only if you have documentation of the disability, so ensuring that you have that documentation adults should be a part of your gap year plan.
If you can't get that documentation then see if you can have classmates or tutors check over any homework you turn in for transcription errors before you turn in the assignment, or check them very very carefully yourself. What you're looking for is to make sure that the numbers in the assignment were correctly written on your scratch paper and then that the results on your scratch paper are correctly written in the assignment. This is the single biggest problem that I have had with my math classes and unfortunately it's not a problem with an easy fix.
One thing that has helped me with that slightly is working out equations by hand whenever possible because I'm much more likely to mess up putting a number in a calculator and writing it down than I am to mess up working by hand.
OH HEY by the way about the expensive textbook thing - a huge number of textbooks are available on archive.org and you can check them out for free for an hour at a time with an account. All you have to do is sign up for an account and it costs nothing to borrow a book and read a chapter. I've gotten through entire classes without buying a textbook because there was an older edition on archive.org.
So, for example, someone in the notes mentioned "Math for Dummies" - and here's part of that series on archive.org:
I have used books in the For Dummies series before and I find that they are a useful primer on a subject that manages to be approachable without feeling patronizing.
And what type of math class you have to pass is going to depend on your major. When I was an English Lit major the most I needed was Math for Liberal Arts Majors which was basic stuff like probability and money management and interest. As a Nutrition major I need to take college algebra, statistics, trigonometry, and pre-calc. If I were to switch my major to Computer Science I'd need to take Calculus with Analytic Geometry I and II.
At a bare minimum you will need to pass some type of Math 100/Basic Math/Daily Math class; here is an open-source textbook for Math in Society. I'd strongly recommend going through the textbook and seeing what your level of understanding of each subject is and working from there.
There are free and open source textbooks for hundreds of classes and dozens of math classes. Here's one on elementary algebra, here's one on Multivariable Calculus. If you know what level of math you will need for your major, check out some free textbooks on the subject to get an idea of what direction to point your learning.
Now, you say that you're going to college but you don't say that you've been admitted to college; if you haven't been accepted to a specific college with a particular matriculation plan I cannot recommend community colleges enough. In most states in the US community colleges are much more affordable even than state colleges and they will have smaller class sizes, a better tutor-to-student ratio than larger schools, and failing a math class at a community college is not the same level of expensive disaster as failing a math class at a university.

Hat tip to @nessiemonster88 thank you so much!
Are you disabled and do you like visiting zoos? If yes, I want your feedback!
I am giving a presentation this fall on small/easy things that zoos and aquariums can do to be more disability friendly (above and beyond simply being ADA compliant). I’m drawing from my own experiences as well as all the information contributed to the accessibility spreadsheet.
I realized that there’s probably a lot of feedback and great ideas I’m missing because the spreadsheet asks for specifics about facilities, and folk might not remember where something occurred or know enough details to feel like they should contribute. I want to fix that!
So, if you’ve had accessibility issues at zoos and aquariums, and want to share your thoughts on the problems or the solutions, I’d love to hear it. I want as much information as possible to inform this presentation.
Please feel free to comment here or message me! No facility location / dates needed (but if you want to include that, I can add your thoughts to the spreadsheet too).
