June 28th is International Body Piercing Day, in loving dedication to one of the grandfathers of what we now know as modern day piercing: Jim Ward.
Jim was one of the key contributors to the early roots of the body modification industry. In 1975, he and Doug Malloy opened the "Gauntlet" in Los Angeles, the first body piercing studio of its kind in the U.S. and the world. This small intimate space would later blossom to other major cities such as San Francisco, Seattle, New York and Paris.
With the help of Fakir Musafar, he started the "Piercing Fans International Quarterly" (PFIQ), a piercing-dedicated publication that helped inspire many to the world of body modification. The piercing phenomenon was quickly on the rise, and their passion for experimentation and education lead them to invent many of the techniques, tools and jewelry designs still used today by professional body piercers all over the world.
So the next time you stop by for your new piercing, remind yourself: "Thanks Jim." We're infinitely grateful for his inspiration and influence on the modern day piercing industry and the wonderful body modification community we're privileged to be a part of.
