The 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie is obviously not without its flaws: its production was not only hell for the actors but it was also, frankly, dangerous, and in retrospect it was definitely not the sort of film Nintendo wanted to attach their flagship franchise to. But much more so than the 2023 film the film understood that film and video games are two completely different mediums and that gameplay as it is shown in a video game is mostly a contrivance to grant players agency over the action. You can't make a film about an Italian man jumping on turtles and driving go-karts because jumping on turtles and driving go-karts are simply means of utilizing the language of video games towards telling the story. A video game movie that simply translates the act of gameplay (down to a progression of "levels") into film simply turns the player into a spectator: the interactivity lost the viewer is reduced to a passive recipient for what would undoubtedly be a fun set piece to play but does not serve any major narrative function,
The bank robber on the phone with the hostage negotiator: Please just send the SWAT team in to kill us all
unfortunately the United States’ position as a global hegemonic superpower and a capitalist nation means that something like narrative cohesiveness is not rewarded, and pretty sparkles and brand recognition are ultimately shameless cash grabs that create a pristine, hollow product devoid of meaning outside of the associative to those that pay attention. the identity crisis of late stage capitalism is that we are so estranged from our own identities that our media doesn’t stand for anything, especially not our own authentic experiences
The bank robber: Oh god not you too
writing a callout post for our cat:
- invading queer spaces (the dining room table)
- refusing to listen to queer voices (us telling her to get off the dining room table)
- harming queer bodies (puts her claws out when you pick her up)
I just had a memory of doing my illustration degree, and a professor telling me I had to draw a a generic cat instead of Pangur for a faux-storybook page because Pangur “doesn’t have universal appeal”
top left is the sketch he vetoed!
im not racist i just have made broad generalizations and assumptions about black people and art without bothering to even look into it first - but ill still present my assumptions as correct. im not racist its just that my opinions on black art coincide with antiblack opinions - that black people are misogynistic and violent and enjoy it. im not racist its just that when this is pointed out to me instead of examining it i double down on opinions ive never bothered to check against the culture ive made assumptions about - im not racist, i just have never interacted with black art before but simultaneously i am confident that it is all misogynistic, all vile. i am not racist. i just dont like rap
the fact that dorothy nearly convinces someone not to try and kill her by literally going *looks at you with my big wet eyes* will always be funny to me
Yknow. If you’re like, a tow truck driver or something. And you get a call. “Oh no, there’s a strange camper van parked on my street for two days” like
If you get there and someone’s living out of that van. You can just. Not tow them. Like. Let them know what’s up so they can find a friendlier place to rest maybe but just. Idk. Tell your boss it was gone by the time you got there or something. Don’t do shit like that to people who are already struggling.
Maybe you’re not a tow truck driver. Maybe you’re someone with some other kind of power. You can just. Lie. Protect people. Say no. Pretend you didn’t see it. Move on. Let people live. Have some class solidarity, use your power for good. You have choice. You have agency. You have compassion. Don’t let being an employee strip you of that.
did some math based on adventurer's bible stuff about average sizes of tallmen & half-foots & the canon heights of the characters and. chilchuck is the half-foot equivalent of 6'5

Youtube doing this while fully fucking enabling the alt right pipeline with dozens if not hundreds of racist/anti semitic grifters on their platform for well over a decade at this point is an insane double standard.
an audio-only version just dropped on YouTube so I say we blow up the views/engagement on it

“denied the catharsis of punishment” is an underappreciated but hugely effective narrative consequence imo

Some "Pixelart" i did a while ago.
NYEL superstructure (I don't think I introduced her yet, she's one of my OC's and she is somewhat important to the story ig.)
This was my first try at making pixelart like this.
