Mirror In The Abyss

@adolescentarchon

I'm a 25yo shy bi guy living with his two brothers and his cryptic sense of self. At one point, this blog was very much NSFW/XXX but you'd have to scroll for literal hours to find anything significant.

He’s saying the thing again

“The Jewish state would form a part of a wall of defence for Europe in Asia, an outpost of civilisation against barbarism."

- Theodor Herzl

Oh.

This is an overtly fascist sentiment.

And the exact same sort that was said in the genocide of Native Americans...

I'd leave. This is a sign that my opponent has the most fucked up unethical spells imaginable, and I am not about to be subject to Malchezar's Piercing Prostate Bomb or something

I'm not a psychology researcher, but my guess would be that the nature of it being a time-limited puzzle game where you have to juggle multiple factors means that your short-term memory gets filled and the traumatic images are "dumped" in favor of remembering how many times to rotate the L piece. "As soon as possible" is probably because the sooner you do it, the less likely it is to become part of your long-term memory.

If that is true, then other time-limited activities where you have to remember and plan in a tight time frame may serve a similar purpose.

I think it's important to remember, as a rule of thumb, if you take advantage of a social service, it actually makes it easier for other people who need that service to access it. Most of the time, when these services get cut, it's because politicians will look at usage and say "see, no one is really using this thing, we can afford to trim the budget for food stamps by at least half". Whereas if you decide to step up and use these programs, even if you feel like you "don't really need it", at bare minimum it's another data point advocates can use to say "hey, look, people are using this thing, this is an important service we are providing, do not cut our funding".

I work at a nonprofit, and it is absolutely wild explaining to folks that being part of a program that reduces their energy bill actually helps us get funding to help even more people get energy bill savings.

You aren’t taking resources from anyone by using programs you qualify for. You are making a case for those programs being important enough to continue to exist and (in many cases) grow.

not to be sappy on main BUT one thing that i really loved when studying linguistics was that the more important a word is, the earlier the concept of this thing was given a word. for example, the word water is similar in many similar languages (aqua, agua, água). so, the more important a word is, the more languages it’ll be similar across and the older this word will be, theoretically and generally speaking (many other things also affect this)

AND SO in my years studying linguistics, there was one word that was nearly identical across so many regionally different languages (though there are outliers of course), from europe to most of asia to subsaharan africa to indigenous languages. across nearly all languages this is the first word people learn how to say and maybe the first word humans in general officially named and defined:

  • mamãe - portuguese
  • 妈妈 (māmā) - chinese
  • ਮੰਮੀ (mamī) - punjabi
  • mamah - mayan (yucatec)
  • мама - bulgarian, russian, ukrainian
  • ماں (mäm) - urdu
  • মা (mā) - bengali
  • mẹ (may) - vietnamese
  • ママ (mama) - japanese
  • అమ్మ (am'ma) - telugu
  • mama - quechua
  • મમ્મી (mam'mī) - gujarati
  • അമ്മ (am'ma) - malayalam
  • amá - navajo
  • 엄마 (omma) - korean
  • eme - native hawaiian
  • onam - uzbek
  • aana - yupik
  • mema - tagish
  • μαμά (mamá) - greek
  • mama - swahili
  • أمي (umi) - arabic
  • mayi - chichewa
  • माँ (ma) - hindi
  • mam - dutch
  • ម៉ាក់ (ma) - khmer
  • แม่ (mæ̀) - thai
  • அம்மா (am'mā) - tamil
  • අම්මා (ammā) - sinhala
  • amai - zulu
  • ama - basque
  • आमा (āmā) - nepali
  • အမေ (amay) - myanmar (burmese)
  • mamá - spanish
  • mom/mum- english

this isn’t actually the first word because we teach babies this word (most likely), but because the “mama” or “ama” sounds are the easiest things for babies to say, and it’s nearly always the only thing they can say at first, and adults across all languages defined their language around that.

babies all over the world for thousands and thousands of years all started out blabbering sounds like “mama” and mothers everywhere were all like Oh Shit That’s Me! I’m Mama!

the most fucking annoying thing in US politics is, whenever there's a strike, people going "well MY working conditions are even worse and you don't see me complaining". maybe you should complain actually! maybe we should collectively drop the mindset that unnecessary suffering proves merit! how fucking brainwashed do you have to be to BRAG about being treated like shit. I hate this country so much god bless❤️

I really am tempted to reblog this every time it’s on my dash. That description is one of the best things on the internet.

If you preordered the game, you can expect to have it in your hands at the end of April (so far, the pandemic has not been impeding our schedule).

The print quality of the cards is superb. The photos don’t do it justice! The text is a bit blurry in the pictures, but it’s crystal clear!

More inadvisable Dungeons & Dragons characters, justifying that proficiency bonus edition:

  • A sorcerer whose skills were inherited from their supernatural parent along with their magic; they have to carefully avoid thinking about what they’re doing, because it’s all intuitive for them, and if they try to approach it systematically they can’t do it
  • A sheltered young bard who has practically no real-world experience and is constantly remarking that they “read about something like this once” before attempting some unlikely feat of skill; infuriatingly, it always works
  • A traditionalist barbarian who bemoans the world’s present degenerate state and champions strict adherence to the Old Ways; some of the activities they’re willing to claim with a straight face are exercises of the Old Ways raise a number of questions
  • A rogue whose suspiciously convenient talents always seem to stem from having studied something completely unrelated to the challenge at hand; if questioned, they’ll blandly remark that you can never predict which skills will turn out to be transferable
  • A ranger who’s constantly tasting things. Tracking quarry? Taste the dirt. Discerning a person’s motives? Taste one of their pilfered possessions. Searching a forgotten library for information about the weaknesses of a malevolent demigod? Taste the books.
  • A cleric whose holy book contains oddly specific verses about how to properly go about nearly any task, many of which are absolutely not appropriate for a priest to be dirtying their hands with; they’re keen on pointing out when others are “doing it wrong”
  • A monk whose training approaches every activity as a form of combat by employing a series of esoteric (and often somewhat strained) metaphors; occasionally they need to be reminded to curb their enthusiasm and keep the violence metaphorical
  • A druid who disdains the works of civilisation and claims that everything worthwhile can be learned from the beasts of the land; when it later turns out that they know how to pick locks, they insist a raccoon taught them
  • A fighter who has no formal combat training, but is proficient with every weapon they encounter – no matter how unusual – because it just happens to resemble some tool or implement they used in their improbably varied pre-adventuring career

issue: the kittens are still trying to learn words. gus knows his name and daisy knows hers, but they don’t seem to quite grasp that when I say “babies!” im referring to both of them.

hypothesis: “babies” is too similar to “daisy” and they’re getting confused

test: start saying “gamers” instead

Outcome: they’re understanding it and it’s hysterically funny

me, calling down the hall from stirring a can of cat food: LET’S GO, GAMERS

I started using Head and Shoulders ten years ago for itchy scalp and dandruff, and then for ten years I have not had itchy scalp and dandruff, so I thought "why do I still buy shampoo to combat itchy scalp and dandruff when I do not have itchy scalp and dandruff," so I stopped buying the shampoo for itchy scalp and dandruff and can you guess I have now? Can you predict what currently afflicts me? It's alright if you can't because apparently I fuckin couldn't either

Cutting something out of your life because you think you don't need it any more only to realize that it was in fact working as intended and preventing a problem that will return should you stop doing this is a good experiment to run periodically with something small like dandruff shampoo, lest you start to think it would be a good idea to do this with like let's say public health and the social safety net and vaccines

I had a liver transplant when I was 14 and like six months later I was chatting with my surgeon and he said “there’s gonna come a time, probably when you’re a teenager, where you’re gonna think, ‘I feel great, why am I still taking all this medication? I haven’t needed it in years.’ and you’re gonna want to stop taking all this medication. Guess what’s gonna happen then? You’re gonna go into rejection and your liver is gonna start failing, and you’re gonna be dying again, and we’re gonna have to find you another liver. So don’t do that.” And I said “why the fuck would anyone do that?” and he said “people are stupid.”

every once in a while when I get annoyed by a pharmacy or don’t wanna get out of bed to do my drugs I think “ugh, this is dumb, why do I do this?” and that conversation slams into me like a truck and I remember that I am, in fact, stupid

This happens a TON with mental health medications. It’s why so many bipolar and schizophrenic people go off their meds a lot and it’s very hard to get them back on because a lot of people still hold that “but it didn’t help/do anything” mindset after, especially with a potentially skewed headspace. It’s very easy to start to think maintenance isn’t doing anything. Then people wonder why it “suddenly” starts falling apart when it stops.
