one time a professor asked me if i’d ever wanted to write anything “more important” than romance. and i said no. i was put on this earth to write about sad people kissing. and if another writer ever came up to me and said they wanted to write 400 pages containing nothing but a character baking a single loaf of bread each day, then i would tell them to do that. people don't write something because it's important. they write about something and that is what makes it important

Fictober 1: There they were, pursuing wisdom

Set in a post-movie adventure for The Cat Returns

Haru climbed up the ladder, looking over the shelves. “What was the author you were looking for again?”

“Raoulin Bechard,” Baron called from his place two cases over. “He had several theses on the study of transformation and transfiguration. If we can find a connection between his work and that of Popovic-”

“Found it!” Haru snatched the two volumes needed, then slid down the ladder to the floor. She set them on the cart, which was slowly growing taller as they found more books to help with their plan. She looked it over and took a deep breath. “Do you really think we can do this?”

“Of course. I have every confidence that we’ll figure it out.” Baron was glancing at the book in his hands as he spoke. “After all, it can’t be too hard too-” he cut off as he looked up at Haru’s face. He set the book down and extended a hand to cup her chin. “We will find a cure, Haru. I promise you.”

Haru felt tears start to prick at the corners of her eyes and her lip quivered. “But, will it be soon enough? Mom, she doesn’t-”

Baron stepped around and wrapped his arms around her. “We will save her. I won’t let your mother remain stone for the rest of her days.”

Haru sniffed and buried her head into Baron’s chest, her hands gripping his vest. She tried to absorb some of his confidence, his surety. This spell, it had been meant for her, meant to be unbreakable. But Baron said they’d find a way, and Baron always did.

She nodded against him and pushed back, wiping her eyes. “Right, so, we got what we need?”

Baron looked over the cart of books. “Yes, I think so, so long as-”

“Hey Baron!” They heard Muta call from the end of the aisle. “I found that history of stone spells, and one about carving!”

“Excellent, Muta!” Baron called back, then was rebuked by one of the library sprites for yelling. Haru giggled, and pushed the cart towards the table where they had set up shop. They would find the cure, and then they’d explain everything to her mom.
