How to upset Gene Roddenberry
Look, I knew Gene. We talked many times about the idea of Jim and Spock being lovers. He had no problem with it at all.
But you know what he did have a problem with?
Zippers.
He was adamant that by the 23rd century humans would have a better solution to fastening their clothes than zippers and buttons. And I mean, he felt passionately about this.
Passionately.
It’s because of this that those first gold shirts the crew wore in Where No Man Has Gone Before got scrapped in favor of shirts that didn’t show the fasteners. And also why the cast were sewn into their environment suits while filming Tholian Web and could only use the bathroom at lunch before being sewn back into costume til quitting time.
And it was the reason for Gene speaking quite sharply to me once—the only time he ever did — and I hung my head and felt like a kid in trouble with her dad. He read a slash story of mine and got on my case for writing zippers & buttons into the undressing scene. Really kind of chewed me out.
Didn’t bat an eye at a fairly graphic description of Jim and Spock having sex — but boy was he upset about those buttons!
A growing interest in the Welsh language and culture could mean Cymraeg is no longer classed as being “vulnerable to extinction,” according to a new report. Preply’s Endangered Language Report says an increase in the number of people wanting to learn Welsh could help the Welsh Government realise its ambition of one million Welsh speakers by 2050.
Welsh is integral to the country’s heritage and national identity but a decline in the number of Welsh speakers had put it at risk of extinction in recent years. It is one of Britain’s oldest languages but historical events such as the Act of Uniformity in 1549 (where all acts of worship were to be conducted in English), have impacted its growth dramatically.
The infamous ‘Welsh Not’ signs of the 1800s which were designed to punish school children for speaking Welsh are just one example of numerous attempts to extinguish the language throughout history. Despite this, Welsh remains widely spoken in homes, schools, and workplaces across the country and interest in the language is on the rise.
