super special award for every1 who survived 🥇

I was super confused and then I remembered I live in America. The land of needlessly complicating things like dates.

Basic rules for analysing fiction, an incomprehensive list jotted down in a hurry:

  1. The protagonist isn’t always right
  2. The protagonist isn’t always good
  3. The protagonist isn’t always written to be relatable or likeable
  4. The narrator isn’t always right
  5. The narrator isn’t always good
  6. The narrator isn’t always telling the truth
  7. The narrator isn’t always the author
  8. The protagonist’s moral compass, the narrator’s moral compass and the author’s moral compass are three entirely different things that only occasionally overlap
  9. Pay attention to what characters do and not just what they say
  10. Pay special attention when what the characters do is at odds with what they say
  11. A lot of the time the curtains are blue for a reason. If they aren’t, you should read better books

Last week, Johnson & Johnson agreed not to enforce their secondary patents on bedaquiline in most countries after a long public pressure campaign by TB activists around the world.

(A special shoutout to Nandita Venkatesan and Phumeza Tisilethe, the two women who led the charge to prevent the patent evergreening in India, which is the only reason generic bedaquiline is in production.)

But the problem of patent evergreening is everywhere--as this NYT story reports, Gilead intentionally denied people access to a drug they knew to be less toxic than alternatives because it wanted to extend its monopoly on HIV drugs for as long as possible.

Similarly, Johnson & Johnson has been intentionally denying people access to affordable bedaquiline, even though they knew they could make a profit even if they decreased the price by 65%.

What's especially galling is that both these companies benefit tremendously from public investment (bedaquiline research was funded primarily by the public), and so we end up paying for it twice--once to develop it, and once to have it available to the sick.

This is infuriating, and it is resulting in the real impoverishment and death of so many people. How does it end? With better governance and regulation. In this respect, India can be a model for us--their courts have done a much better job than U.S. ones of determining what really deserves to be patented and for how long. I'm hopeful that we can learn from the, but disgusted by this ongoing horror.

 A cartoon in two panels.

Panel 1: A shaded brick wall with a circular hole in it.  Three shapes, a purple pentagon, a green trapezium, and a yellow triangle are looking at the hole with confused, sad, frustrated expressions.

A voice is coming though the hole:“I don’t know what you guys are complaining about …

“Panel 2:  The brighter, sunnier side of the wall.

A lilac circle - looking very self-satisfied as the other shapes peer through the hole - says"If you want to make it through, just be yourself!”

Commentary text beneath the image:

Canikon-Bokeh “Exactly”

sonic-hip-attack  ‘Imagine a wall full of circular holes, that circles can keep walking in and out of with no difficulty.

‘Now imagine that the triangles manage to get the resources together, after years of not being able to fit through the circle’s holes,

to drill a single triangle space into the wall.

Now imagine that the circle who previously supported the triangle’s efforts because they are well-rounded (har) and value equality comes along and sees the construction project.

But instead of being happy, they get angry ’“Well, I won’t be able to fit through your hole!!!! the circle cries.’"I helped you get the drill!!!!” the circle shrieks.’“Make it fit me too!!!!” the circle demands.

‘The triangles, barely holding it together enough to get a triangle hole together stare at the circle in confusion.

’“You have all the holes you need,” the triangles explain.

This is for us.

You don’t need to fit through our hole, too.“

’"YOU’RE BEING UNEQUAL AND HURTING MY FEELINGS!”

the circle wails, “I DON’T SUPPORT YOUR HOLE IF IT DOESN’T FIT ME TOO GIVE ME MY DRILL BACK.”’

“It’s not your drill, it’s our drill. You helped us get it because you said you cared.”’

“I ONLY CARED WHEN I THOUGHT YOU’D MAKE A HOLE EVERYONE COULD FIT THROUGH, YOU’RE PERPETUATING INEQUALITY!!”

’“Why is it up to us, the small group that has never been able to fit through the wall at all, to make a hole everyone can use?

Why isn’t it up to you, the people who have been able to cross back and forth at will for years? We just want to see the other side, why are you yelling at us?”

’“I DIDN’T ASK TO BE BORN A CIRCLE OMG, I’VE HAD TO WORK HARD ALL MY LIFE TOO. YOU’RE JUST BEING BIGOTED AGAINST ME BECAUSE OF SOMETHING I CAN’T CONTROL JUST LIKE EVERYONE IS AGAINST YOU.”’

“You are interfering with our project and asking us to comfort you while we’re trying to make progress. Please leave.”’

“I’m going to tell everyone about this,” the circle warns.

“Nobody will support you now”’

“Apparently nobody ever did,” the triangles sigh, getting back to work.’

SetFabulazersToMaximumCaptain’

It’s kind of sad.‘That we have to draw comics using colorful shapes ‘To explain systematic inequality to people.

This makes so much sense.

Does anyone know of any easy to understand info on gender identity? Like, from complete scratch easy? My grandma is trying to understand, but she's really struggling and I'm having a hard time explaining it.

HELP MERCY GET OUT OF ITS NEGLECTFUL HOUSEHOLD (TAKE 2)

my old post stopped being rbed, so im remaking it.

hi, im mercy, im 19 and disabled. i have been job searching for 2 years now with no success, and only get £265 month (half of which goes to my dad, who is also disabled, but he often takes 75% of it for drugs and alcohol). i only get to eat one meal a day and my living situation will continue to worsen the longer i stay, as my dad is extremely emotionally abusive and neglectful.

we need money for food, gas and electric, rent, etc (and basic neccesities). were starving most of the time, and rarely ever have food in the house due to things getting more and more expensive.

my current goal is to move out and either find roommates OR potentially find a caravan park to live in or something, as i doubt ill be able to gain the money to rent a place. i dont rlly have a goal, so im setting it at £1000 for now and will increase if i hit that. i unfortunately cant make a gofundme as my dad frequently looks on there and id have to share my legal name.

my p@yp@l is here, my k@fi is here, and my c@sh@pp is here. anything helps. please donate if youre able and willing, and rb if you cant. things are getting worse day-by-day.
