Older merlin and Arthur because they deserve to be happy and middle aged

bbc's merlin was literally thee most show of all time they gave us a black actress playing guinevere, one of the greatest queerbaits of our time, katie mcgrath (sword), katie mcgrath (evil), blatant disregard for any sort of historical accuracy, a queer metaphor they publicly said "didn't mean anything", and then at the end they fucking killed king arthur. truly legendary.

Gwen fell in love with Arthur The King, the perfect facade, the mask, the self assured one, the one who was sweet and romantic. That was through no choice of her own. Arthur was scared, and so only showed her that side of himself, in hopes that she would not leave him like everyone else.

But Merlin. Merlin saw all of Arthur The Person. The rude one, the scared one, the messy and imperfect side. The true Arthur. The umasked one. Because Merlin stayed. Through all the fights, through all the battles, through all the mean comments and stupid words that cannot be taken back, Merlin stayed. Merlin knows him. Merlin understands him.

Merlin was only ever his.

Merlin doesn't really know the rules of court, he doesn't know how it is proper to bow or to whom one may answer, Merlin the first few times -while he is learning- does more or less what he wants while Arthur looks at him and shudders as Merlin looks a Lord in the eye while talking to him and Arthur has to make Merlin lower his gaze by making him bow his head.

Merlin has no idea about court etiquette at all, but he is learning.

He is not quite sure what his duties actually are, but he is learning.

Merlin, despite his innumerable flaws, is a quick learner and thanks to his witty responses and goofy smile, he manages to get out of unpleasant situations without so much as a reprimand.

Arthur is almost admired if he has to be honest.

However, everything Merlin does not learn from the rest of the servants in the castle, Arthur teaches him. When Merlin gets it wrong, when he serves a drink the wrong way ("But I'm filling a glass, how can that be wrong?" "If you let me finish talking, Merlin!") or bows the wrong way to a lady or opens his mouth to answer a lord or knight in tone, Arthur is there to correct him.

And, as already mentioned, Merlin is a quick learner.

In a short time he learns how to behave, he learns with whom he can joke and with whom he must behave impeccably.

Perhaps Arthur should reflect on why he has not yet heard a deferential sire addressed to him.

That said, the point is that Merlin doesn't know much about etiquette and customs and what exactly he should do as the prince's manservant, and since Arthur is the prince he is the only one who can explain to him what he should do, right? So it is that Merlin finds himself brushing Arthur's hair and giving him a shave, both of which Arthur should do himself because no one can be trusted with a knife near the neck of the future king of Camelot, no one is worthy nor can be trusted with all that much, especially someone from another realm and known for so little.

Merlin is babbling about something as he passes the blade across Arthur's neck, and his voice, despite being frantic because he is inflamed by what he is saying, manages to calm Arthur down like few other things in the world.

Arthur closes his eyes and trusts Merlin.

Merlin does not know this and Arthur will make sure that he never finds out.

OPEN COMMISSIONS

Hey y'all, commissions are open and kinda emergent. I have not been paid by my main job in two months despite rendered services, and things have slowed down with supplemental clients. I've been managing tho, up until this week's client canceled. I have my important belongings in storage and the last day I can pay is in six days then it goes to auction. So since I'm quite literally not doing other work and options with no transportation on short notice are limited, arting it is! I understand things are tight for people right now so if you can't commission right now, please boost and help a disabled enby queer and their 3 doggos out this pride.

Pay is due up front, message for PP, C&shapp, or V3nmo info. Turn around dependent on place in queue, approx two weeks.

merlin in 2009: haha silly, fun family-friendly retelling of arthurian leg-

merlin in 2012: you will choose the one you love over fate and destiny and life itself, you will condemn him by trying to save him, and though you have given your life for his time and time again without seeking any credit, he owes you more life debts than he can count and these debts will be repaid with a thousand lifetimes of grief and loneliness as you wait for the one life you get to share with him again

Arthur is courting Merlin. Everyone in the castle knows… except apparently for Merlin.

Arthur gives Merlin a neckerchief. Two days later, he uses it to bandage a new knight’s wound. Arthur picks Merlin flowers and Merlin chops, grinds and boils them into remedies. Arthur tries to take Merlin on a romantic picnic and Merlin packs a crossbow instead of a picnic basket.

It’s driving Arthur insane. He’s so desperate that he’s almost to the point of actually talking to Merlin but he knows he can find the perfect gift to express how much Merlin means to him, he just needs to try harder.

He asks Gwen for advice. He buys Gwaine endless amounts of ale and pumps him for knowledge on Merlin’s likes. He pulls Lancelot aside after training and grills him on everything he knows about Merlin.

It becomes clear that Arthur needs to make a grand gesture. So when Merlin walks into his chambers that night, Arthur blurts out, “I know you have magic and I’m going to repeal the magic ban for you.”

Merlin shrugs his shoulders and nonchalantly says, “That’s nice” without even a thank you.

After preparing Arthur for bed, Merlin goes to the tavern for a celebratory drink. He sits beside Gwaine and helps himself to his jug of ale, ignoring the empty jugs littering the table.

“The Princess is trying to court you, you know?” Gwaine drunkenly slurs into Merlin’s ear, his arm slung across Merlin’s shoulders.

“I know.”

Gwaine looks cross eyed and confused. “But you rejected all his gifts and we all know it’s not because you don’t love him because you’re ass over kettle for him, completely looney—“

Merlin smirks, shrugs his shoulders and admits, “He hasn’t said a word about it. He just keeps throwing gifts at me and ordering me to pack picnics. He’s going to repeal the ban on magic for me and he can’t even say, ‘Merlin I would like to court you.’ Relationships require communication and Arthur needs to be taught how.”

The door to the tavern slams closed. Just inside the door, still in his sleep clothes and wearing his boots on the wrong feet, stands the King, wide-eyed from the sheer insanity of the man he loves.

“Merlin!” Arthur shouts in the suddenly silent tavern. “You absolute menace, fool and love of my miserable life, I would like to court you. Is that all right with you?”

Merlin smiles, takes a drink of his ale and only has time to say, “I suppose” before Arthur drags him back to the privacy of his chambers so they can snog each other senseless.
