Tumblr Migration 2: Reddit Boogaloo

We all know about the Twitter immigrants, but there seems to be radio silence on what's happening now with Reddit users from certain subreddits doing a similar thing.

What's happening?

Reddit is restricting their API later this month and killing off third-party apps. An AMA (Ask Me Anything) with the CEO Steve Hoffman was held and it was clear that he would continue with the changes.

In protest, thousands of subreddits across the site are planning to go dark for 48 hours on June 12th. Some are planning to continue indefinitely until the changes are reversed.

Okay, so how does this affect Tumblr?

Some subreddits (mainly queer and left-leaning meme ones, don't worry too much about Reddit Atheists™ overrunning us) are encouraging their users to jump ship to our beloved - and beloathed - hellsite. There will be another influx of new users and many will be unfamiliar with how the site works.

What do us Tumblr users do?

Show them how to use the site; introduce them to the site's culture, tell them to reblog shit and curate their dashboard. Sorta like how we welcomed Twitter users back when they flocked here. Kungpowpenising optional.

I'm new from Reddit, what do I do here?

CHANGE YOUR PROFILE PICTURE AND BANNER TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN DEFAULT BECAUSE THIS SITE IS FILLED WITH BOTS AND YOU MIGHT BE MISTAKEN FOR ONE. This is the FIRST thing you should do after getting a blog.

Other folks can help you with stuff like curating your dashboard or creating sideblogs (or you can look shit up) but please, PLEASE just give yourself an icon and reblog some stuff so people don't mistake you for a bot

media you can't touch because you interacted with it during a really bad and dark time in your life and the entire media is coated in gross drippy bad-touch depression gunk vs media you can't touch because you interacted with it during a really good time in your life and trying to touch it zaps your brain with pangs of longing and grief for what you no longer have, fight

actually you know what that's exactly it i would rather someone add 5 parantheticals after every sentence than use tone indicators it's 1. accomplishing SO much more in terms of clarity 2. extremely funny to look at depending on how they're used

observe:

"is this real? /gen" — i thought /gen meant "general" for ages. i would not be able to understand this on first sight a few years ago and is thus ineffective

"is this real? (genuine question)" — i fully understand this without issue

"is this real? (genuine question) (can't tell) (very realistic) (looks real) (scary) (photoshop?)" — is not only incredibly clear it's also very funny to read all of these thoughts stapled together while also in their own parentheses. it's also the most useful because now i can actually address all parts of what they are asking me with as much specificity as BOTH of us need

Can we all just appreciate that Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls, was prank calling Republican voter fraud hotlines on November 6, 2020?

Ok i scrolled past the first post about this and so this is the second one I saw, but they both fail to mention HE CALLED IN USING CHARACTER VOICES

[first clip]

Woman: This is a hotline to report instances of voter fraud.

Alex Hirsch, in the voice of Soos Ramírez: Okay, yeah, I saw what I believe is a voter fraud situation?

Woman: Can you please describe it for me?

Hirsch: Um... so I saw a man, uh... he walked into this- this building. Uh, and he was wearing a black- he had a, a black hat, black mask, a striped... shirt and a, uh, red tie. And, um... I believe there were hamburgers in his bag? And he was saying "robble robble," as he was exiting the building? Like a burglar.

Woman: [unintelligible]

Hirsch: Y'know, I think- I think he's probably antifa. Can I speak to Rudy Giuliani?

[dial tone]

[second clip]

Alex Hirsch, in the voice of Stanley "Stan" Pines: Hi, I'd like to report an incident of voter fraud.

Woman: Uh, yes sir.

Hirsch: Yeah, so I, um- I committed some voter fraud. I'm very proud of it, and I'd like to tell Mr. Rudy Giuliani about it.

Woman, in a flat tone: Great. Um. Awesome.

Hirsch: My name is Stan Pines. P-I-N-E-E-S. You got that down?

Woman: ...Yes.

Hirsch: So, y'know, I- I went in there and, uh, I had a big ol' sack. And I just started, just takin' ballots out of the box. And I, y'know, I- I didn't even- I didn't even try to hide it. I waved to the crowd, I blew them kisses. And uh, y'know, I think I'm kind of a local hero and I'd, uh, I'd like Rudy to give me a medal or somethin'.

[dial tone]

Hirsch, corpsing: She hung up on me!

i must not afternoon nap. afternoon nap is the mind-killer. afternoon nap is the little death that brings total obliteration. i will face my afternoon sleepy tired and permit it to pass over and through me. and when it has gone i will turn the inner eye to see its path. where the afternoon sleepy tired has gone there will be nothing. only i will remain

I MUST NOT AFTERNOON NAP. AFTERNOON NAP IS THE MIND KILLER

Some people are pointing out how out-of-touch Waid seems to be about social media in the new World's Finest: Teen Titans, but I would argue he’s not going far enough. This comic should be the spiritual successor to Bob "Leaping Lumpfish/Cool it Cats" Haney but for gen Z.

Here are some corrections I made to the first issue to make it more faithful to the original.

YES! EXACTLY!!

"They're saying weird and cringe stuff" THEY ARE FOURTEEN YEAR OLDS IN TIGHTS. I've never met a 14 yr old who doesn't say weird and cringe stuff, let alone one in tights. That's just what that stage of life is.

Also these guys were straight up insane in the og comics. "Suffering Saphos", "Flasheroo", "Heebie-jeebies", "Robin-Bobin", whatever the fuck secret language Dick and Wally had, ect.

So this is accurate to the lore. The Teen Titans being weird and cringe is a canon event.

Allow me to elucidate, @a-sour-nectarine

When most people "roll their eyes", they flick their eyes directly upward, usually as far as they comfortably go, then resume looking normally.

When someone who learned the phrase before the behavior does it, they usually go in a circular (ish) motion. Since most eye movements are lines, it's usually pretty triangular: the key points are usually a diagonal up one way, then to the far other side, then to a diagonal low the first way. Thus, the eyes basically make a loop, so they "rolled".

I've found that when people who learned the up-down way first try the circular motion, they might risk motion sickness, so experiment carefully.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN MOST PEOPLE JUST LOOK UP

I really hope that whoever managed to convince Disney that kids fucking LOVE photorealistic animation and will only watch an animated movie about sea creatures if said sea creatures actually look like real fish is laughing their fucking ass off right now

Kids LOVE when the beautiful singing mermaid’s animal sidekicks look like they should be dead with their eyes open at a supermarket deli

hey speaking of criminology does everyone already know polygraphs are bullshit? they're made up. never agree to take a polygraph it is purely an interrogation technique. they aren't real. alternately you can learn to beat them fairly easily. "blood splatter" is also bullshit. dog detection is real (in that dogs are capable of smelling trace molecules and then signalling that they have smelled it) but cops abuse and misuse the dogs to cause false positives all the time. bite imprint matching is also nonsense. just fyi
