Witch Tip:
Instead of pouring salt everywhere for cleansing and protection, try misting salt water from a spray bottle! The salt is unnoticeable to guests, and there is no gritty cleanup!
Add an essential oil for an added boost.
The Theban Alphabet
- The Origin is unknown, But appeares in the 16th century in The Three Books of Occult Philosophy by Cornelius Agrippa
- Also called “The Witches Alphabet”
- Agrippa states that an 13thcentury Italian magician attributes the alphabet to Honorius ( Western Roman Emperor )
- Used today by Pagans, Witches, And Wiccans to write spells and other texts (Like Talismans)
- It is used to disguise the meaning of a text.

“You have to be in a calm, peaceful, positive mindset to work magic!”
No.
Magic isn’t some pixie-dust fairy tale cure that can only do good.
Magic is power. It is chaos, change, control.
I will not quell my emotions to suit your ‘magic’. Flowers will bloom with my laughter and hell fire will rain down with my fury.
Emotions do not weaken my magic. They make it stronger.
9 Easy-To-Find Ingredients Every Aspiring Witch Needs
- Sugar is used primarily as an attracting agent in magic, “sweetening” people to your wishes, whether they be potential lovers or business customers. - In Practice: Use to sweeten a business and draw in more customers. Sprinkle a little sugar in front of the entrance to work in order to draw people in. Add cinnamon for a boost, as cinnamon is considered extremely lucky.
- Mint can be used in your magical practice to make charms work faster, or to better prepare your mind and intentions to be aligned with the intentions of a charm. It can be used in a spray or sprinkle to increase the mental vibrations of a place, so putting it in a school or office is ideal. - In Practice: Mix a teaspoon of dried mint leaf in a cup of boiling water and let it come to room temperature. Add the cup of water to your hair as a rinse after you wash your hair and rinse it. When you rinse the mint tea out, make sure to scrub your scalp thoroughly. This will stimulate mental activity and remove dullness.
- Rosemary got its name from the Latin Rosmarinus meaning “dew of the sea” and is considered to have powerful properties across a wide range of magical traditions, though it’s typically used for protection and cleansing rituals. It can be placed under pillows, in pockets, or secured in infant bedrooms to protect children from negative forces and energy. - In Practice: Keep a sprig of rosemary by your heart and it will always remain open.
- Rosewater is a mild protective agent that can be used as a floor wash to eliminate heavy vibrations, making a home or ritual space more comfortable to live in. It is also known for its use in beauty tonics. - In Practice: Put six cups of rose petals in a saucepan and add four cups of water then bring to a boil. Let the mixture boil for 10–15 minutes. When it has cooled, pour the mixture through a strainer and into a sealable bottle for use in magic. Though fresh-picked roses and rainwater are ideal, using store-bought roses and clean tap water will also work. You can splash on a little rosewater whenever you are feeling down. It also acts as a magnet for loving vibes.
- Garlic - The same healing properties that it has in medicine are useful in magic to remove negativity, and to purify thoughts and places. - In Practice: A quick and easy use for garlic is to burn the skins on a fire or on charcoal in order to keep money in your home. For a spell to eliminate negativity, add cloves of garlic to a bowl of vinegar. Leave overnight. If the garlic has turned dark purple or black, that means there was a lot of negative energy and you should do again with fresh garlic and vinegar for one more night. If it looks fine, then you do not have to redo it. Flush the vinegar an garlic cloves down toilet to dispose of them.
- Sage is an herb of wisdom and healing and can be used in a variety of forms for magical practice. A simple tea made with a teaspoon of sage and a cup of boiling water can be added to a bath in order to destroy illusions and to resolve problems. It can also be added to a charm bag to make your expectations about a charm or spell to be more realistic. - In Practice: Cleanse the house with bundled sage and it will feel lighter, this gets rid of negative energy that has accumulated. You can also do this to yourself to give you a little clear out from a hectic day. sage is available at some magic retailers and craft supply stories. But if you cannot find it bundled, you can dry the sage sprigs yourself. They should be about six inches in length and completely dried when you bundled them with twine. For more complete instructions, you can visit this page for making small basic bundles.
- Sandalwood is a very popular incense scent that is often sold as incense sticks; it can be found at places like a Michael’s craft store just as easily as at a magic shop. Sandalwood is believed to have protective properties and is used most often in spells and charms meant to banish negative forces in your life. - In Practice: When you are feeling blocked, braid three ribbons together, representing three things you feel blocked about. You can write them on the ribbon before you braid. Put the braid in your pocket and carry it with you for a full day to get your energy on it. Light some sandalwood incense and as you take in the scent, take out the braid and start undoing it. Really focus on the intention of these obstacles becoming uncrossed. When finished, take the ribbons to a crossroads or intersection and dispose of them. Leave three pennies for the spirits that open the roads as well.
- Basil is a multipurpose herb with many potential uses in magic, and for bringing good fortune in money and in love. It is also known for its cleansing and lightening properties. - In Practice: Basil can be used for money, prosperity, and love workings. Steep like you would tea and then mop the floors with it or sprinkle a little on the floor and sweep it up.
- Ginger is used to make spells come into fruition faster, as well as enhancing the spell. It is also used to enhance passion in relationships. - In Practice: Adding ginger to food can bring more passion to a relationship.

Advice for the baby Hellenic Polytheists
I’ve got just about a year under my belt now, so I’m very much still a baby myself. But here’s a few things I wish I’d known, or think might be helpful.
- Just make khernips with a match. No really. It’s the extinguishing of a flame in the water that makes it lustral. Don’t worry about the rest unless you really want to and have the time.
- You don’t have to introduce yourself to any gods. They all want to be worshiped; just get to it.
- We’re not as intimidating as you think we are. We just…read a lot. You can read a lot too. You’re welcome here. We’ll even help.
- Books are expensive. Theoi.com’s library is free.
- Statuary is nice. It is also wicked pricey. Here’s what you need on an altar: A bowl for offerings, a vessel for khernips (can be near the altar rather than on it)
- Wine, olive oil, honey, water are pretty universal libations. You’re welcome.
- Dispose of offerings however works for you. Just do it with respect, and you’re fine. Oh but don’t consume offerings to cthonic (underground) deities, alright? That’s bad times.
- The gods demand Arete. That is your personal best, not the best of the person next to you, or your mother, or somebody you idolize on tumblr. Do your best.
- This is a religion of Kharis. When you ask the gods for something, give them something. Then, do not forget the thank you. Offer again if you are granted what you asked for.
- Our tumblr community is pretty great, but we also are sometimes wrong. Find sources, and for gods’ sake do not try to replace your studies with Tumblr. Read for yourself, learn for yourself, build your religion such that it best honors the gods and works for you.
- If you’re like me, you’re constantly moaning “How do you pronounce THAT?”. I know, friend, I know. Try a couple of these lessons on the ancient Greek alphabet. It is NOT fool proof. It is an incredibly complex language, and pronouncing it ain’t easy. But boy it will help with those particularly tricky epithets.
- Oaths are serious business. Gods are easy to fall in love with. Be careful. Be patient.
- Real life pagans are way, way nicer than the ones on the internet. Go find them.
- There are exceptions to most rules. Most of those exceptions are Dionysos.
- “I don’t know what to say” “I don’t know how to write a hymn” We basically have a hymnal.
- No, ___ will not get jealous if you also worship ____. It’s a fear of us recovering monotheists, but I promise it does not apply to this religion. It’s kind of what POLYtheist means, and plus, most of our gods are related. Show the whole family some love.
- “What is [god name] like?” They’re pretty fucking cool. Go find out for yourself, and bring gifts.
- The gods know we are mortals, and that mortals make mistakes. Apologize. Bring gifts.
I moved into a new apartment this weekend. Here is a cute spell for new homes. :)

DIY - Black Salt (Witches Salt)
Hi Witches!
Today I will show you how to do black salt or witches salt. Black salt is basic stuff, easy to do in home. It may be used, for example, to create salt circle (it’s better than normal white salt).
Black salt is used (in wicca, witchcraft, white magic etc.) to banishing, breaking bad spells (hexes), you need black salt for various rituals too.
What you need?
- 2 pieces of sea salt
- 1 piece of charcoal
- 1 piece of incense ash or herbs ash
- 1 piece of pepper triturated in a mortar
What’s next?
- Shred charcoal
- Add pepper
- Add ash
- Add sea salt and slowly mix
How to store black salt?
Salt should be stored in an airtight jar. Of course, if you want, you can decorate your jar.
I hope you like it. If you have some questions, ask me. Enjoy!
Potion??
Potion - Share a recipe for any potion you like.
Well, it’s going to be more a POWDER than a potion, because I don’t generally do potions. Sticky things, take forever to simmer, often they smell bad, and gods help you if they’re not stored properly. Magical mold problems, yay.
Everybody knows my Banishing Powder, so here’s something a little different:
Lucky Day PowderIntent: To cause good luck and high probability of success to follow one for a single day.Ingredients:Orange PeelCinnamonFenugreekGingerLemon PeelOptional - Irish Moss (aka Carrageen)Materials:Mortar & Pestle (or spice grinder)FunnelMesh StrainerCollection DishContainerNote: Powdered versions of most herbs are available online. See my Online Resources page for recommended vendors.. Also, if you can get your hands on a good spice grinder, you can make your own powder from dried herb products.Grind each ingredient separately to produce fine powder. Sieve the material through the mesh strainer into the collection dish; this removes the larger unground pieces and gives you cleaner powdered herb. (Pro-Tip: Putting a funnel under the mesh strainer reduces lost material and makes collection much easier.)Combine the component powders in the collection dish, mix well, and bottle immediately. For volume, go heavier on the less expensive or more easily available materials like Cinnamon, Ginger, and powdered fruit peels.Put a pinch in your shoes before going out on any day that you need a boost of good fortune, or chance to sway in your favor. Also useful for spellwork related to finding or keeping employment and obtaining wealth. Add to incenses and charms designed to bring luck. Combine in a jar with sesame seeds for long-term household use.
(For more magical powder recipes, I highly recommend picking up The Witches’ Cupboard, written just this past year with my super-awesome co-author, Anna Zollinger. Available on Amazon, along with our first book, The Sisters Grimmoire.)
“Wednesday: Wednesdays are wild and wacky days. They are for communication, change, cunning, and the arts. This is a Mercury day, and just its patron god this day is full of contradictions, change, and excitement. Some suggestions for Wednesday enchantments would include:
- Pulling a little Wednesday color magic into your life by wearing purples or orange
- Carrying a multi-purpose agate with you and tapping into its various charms
- Working with magical plants such as the fern for protection. This plant will also boost the power of any other magical plants with which it is arranged.
- Incorporating lavender into charms and spells for transformation
- Using the charming scent of lily of the valley to improve your memory, or working with the aspen tree for communication
- Calling on Athena, patron of arts and crafts, for inspiration for a new project
- Fanning out a Tarot spell to increase you creativity
- Calling on Hermes on a Wednesday night to bring movement and good luck into your life”:
