Meet the panther chameleon (Furcifer pardalis)! Males come in a spectacular array of colors, which become even more intense during courtship rituals and defensive displays. Females are grey, brown, or a dull green, but change to a pinkish-orange hue when ready to mate. These reptiles inhabit the forests of Madagascar, where they bask in the Sun, awaiting opportunities to snatch prey with quick-striking, mucus-coated tongues, which are very long—sometimes even longer than their bodies! Okay, enough is enough. I’m going to have to lay down some rules. It used to be that the dinosaurs would drop by occasionally, but now it’s an everyday occurrence. Plus, today they showed up with some guy I didn’t even know!
We’re swimming in tomatoes from the garden so I decided that we’d have bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches for lunch. I had just started making mine and they all chimed in that they wanted to help. They did NOT help; they just ate a lot of bacon! I had plenty, so that was fine, but I did not share my sandwich.

Say “hi” to the fish without scales: the mandarinfish (Synchiropus splendidus)! Rather than scales, it has a thick coating of foul-smelling, bitter-tasting mucus. In combination with its bright colors, the malodorous mucus is thought to deter predators by signaling toxicity. The vibrant fish inhabits waters in the western Pacific, such as Indonesia and Australia, where it might be spotted “walking” along the seafloor with its pelvic fins.
