The North Korean soldier who defected to the South in a hail of bullets last year is a general’s son but says most Northerners of his age have no loyalty to Kim Jong-un, according to a Japanese newspaper.

Oh Chong Song’s dramatic dash across the border at the Panmunjom truce village in the Demilitarized Zone – under fire from his comrades – made global headlines last year, and saw him hospitalised with serious injuries.

It is very rare for the North’s troops to defect at Panmunjom, a major tourist attraction and the only place on the frontier where forces from the two sides come face-to-face.

The 25-year-old Oh is the son of a major-general, Japan’s Sankei Shimbun newspaper reported, in what it said was the defector’s first media interview.

But despite his privileged birth – he described himself as “upper class” – he felt no allegiance to the North’s leadership.

“Inside the North, people, and especially the younger generation, are indifferent to each other, politics, and their leaders, and there is no sense of loyalty.”

He was “indifferent” to the rule of Kim Jong Un, the third generation of the Kim family to lead the North, and had no interest in how his friends felt about it.

“Probably 80 percent of my generation is indifferent and has no loyalty,” he was quoted as saying.

“It is natural to have no interest nor loyalty since the hereditary system is taken as a given, regardless of its inability to feed people.”

Oh denied media reports in the South that he was wanted for murder in the North.

After some unspecified trouble with friends, the Sankei said, he started drinking. On his way back to his post he broke through a checkpoint and, fearing execution, decided to keep going.

“I feared I could be executed if I went back so I crossed the border,” he was quoted as saying, adding he had no regrets about defecting.

The newspaper said Japanese intelligence officials had confirmed Oh’s identity.

A short clip posted by the Sankei Shimbun on its website shows him wearing a black jacket and a white top, speaking with a slight North Korean accent. His face is not revealed.

The geopolitical landscape around the Korean peninsula has shifted dramatically since last year when US President Donald Trump threatened to rain “fire and fury” on the nuclear-armed North Korea.

Anonymous asked:

what do you think about mexico?

“We have our moments, but I get the sense that I want to be friends more than he does.”

OOC;; When North Korea first started branching out and seeking relationships with other nations in the 1980s, their relationship was cordial. They collaborated on several projects within Mexico, and Mexico was willing to help with North Korea’s energy projects (the type of which, while nuclear energy, would not have been capable of producing weapons-grade uranium). After North Korea began nuclear tests, however, relations hit a low and have never quite recovered. Mexico is disapproving of all of North Korea’s missile tests.

hey north, i was just wondering what weddings in your country are like!

“Weddings... In North Korea they are carried out in the traditional Korean way. The bride and groom wear joseon-ot (hanbok) instead of Western suits and wedding dresses, and have photos taken in front of a statue of the nation’s leaders. The wedding ceremony usually takes place at the bride or groom’s house and is a relatively humble affair attended by family, friends, and neighbors, at least for the working class. Party elites often rent out restaurants in Pyongyang and have more extravagant weddings.”

“There is no officiator like there is in Western weddings. Instead, a party official from the groom’s workplace might come by to congratulate the couple and say a few words. Party officials sometimes offer the newlyweds monetary gifts in US dollars. For the common people, it is more common to give monetary gifts in North Korean won, or as corn or rice”

“One old tradition is to present the bride and groom with live hens and roosters with dates, flowers, and red chili in their beaks. Different regions also serve guests different traditional foods--noodles, rice, or rice cakes, depending on the region. And of course, tons of liquor.”

“Speaking of foods, those who can’t afford elaborate food setups will borrow food from local vendors, take pictures, and then return it. Also, wealth and party standing are often determining factors when people choose to marry...”

“I hope that answered your questions...”

obviously 2016 was a bad year but in retrospect it has such a fucking… distinct aesthetic to it, yknow? i couldn’t make a 2015 moodboard or a 2017 moodboard or a 2018 moodboard and have people immediately identify which year it’s referring to, but i feel like everyone would be able to very easily recognize a 2016 moodboard. such a recognizable culture and aesthetic around that year

i could literally JUST post these two images and people would be like oh! 2016!

there's this interesting tendency that especially young ppl have when it comes to art where they want to "consume" art by women, lgbt ppl, poc, to make themselves more feminist, anti-racist, etc, and then when they discover these artists have flaws too, that they aren't perfect representatives of the social movement that's being projected onto them, they don't know what to do with that so instead of engaging with these new perspectives they return to art by straight white men who avoid saying something wrong on these topics by simply not speaking of them at all

Avoiding Fast Fashion: How to Repair your Stuff

A friend texted me asking how to avoid fast fashion and the short answer is: you cant. unless you have the money to make all your own clothes, fast fashion is going to be a part of your life because it has permeated every corner of the fashion industry. However, you can learn basic mending and repair techniques to help your clothes last so that you are contributing far less to the fast fashion industry

If the majority of people's jobs are automated away then the economic situation will be so totally transformed that businesses won't be able to find a big enough consumer base to purchase their products anymore cause their own labor cost reduction efforts will corrode away their primary source of demand so please do go ahead and automate all our jobs away I'd really love to see you try to keep your market economy from collapsing afterwards.

I really do hope that they never find the woman who ruined the Tour de France this year. I hope the international manhunt gets them nowhere and this woman becomes the D.B. Cooper of bad cardboard signs

Avatar

For those unaware: A woman holding a single handmade sign up to the cameras at the Tour de France accidentally knocked a cyclist at the front of the pack off of his bike, causing a pileup that became the largest mass crash in the race's entire history. She fled the country and there is now an international manhunt to find her and sue her.

Consider the following: There hasn’t been a major war since WWII, and Europe has been at peace for that entire time. Who do they “pay” to handle their defense?

Oh, and who was it that largely supplied the Allies during WWII with lend-lease, and basically winning the war for them with it?

So...

Awww that’s SO adorable! Anyway here’s a list of countries that became military dictatorships in the last century directly as a result of coups organized by the CIA and the U.S. Military:

  • Chile (1973-1990)
  • Brasil (1964-1985)
  • Guatemala (1954-1985)

These are just off the top of my head, anyone else feel free to add on :^)

imagine being the guy who discovered microorganisms trying to explain to people that you promise there are millions of little secret guys on everything

Imagine: you're a Dutch cloth salesman named Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, and you want to take a closer look at your threads, so you make a microscope. Then you get very interested in making microscopes, and you start making better ones. Like really good, powerful for the time microscopes, without formal training, just because you like looking at stuff.

At the insistence of your doctor friend, you send the notes you've been taking to The Royal Society in London. They say "that's nice" and put it on the fridge. Overjoyed, you keep sending them drawings and notes about all the stuff you see, and they give you a fatherly hair tousle.

Then you tell them you've found tiny animals under your microscope, and they yell that you're full of shit, sending a brigade of scientists to your house. It takes them a year to believe you.

Imagine.

this video is so well done it deserves an oscar
