When she was 10 years old, her skin began to lose its pigment. . Over the years, the patches began to appear all over her body, most noticeably on her face. At 10 years old, she began to apply dark foundation to cover the white patches. It took her an hour each day to apply the foundation. She refused to leave the house without it. . Denise: “I wore it every single day and I learned how to perfect it so people who looked at me wouldn’t even know I had it on. I didn’t want people to ask me questions and I didn’t want the stress.” . She tried to go to Walmart one day without the makeup, but had a panic attack because she felt everyone was staring at her. “I [was] really nervous about taking my makeup off and am like, ‘Oh my gosh. Look how fast my white part is speeding up. What am I gonna do?” . Denise later became the president of a vitiligo support group online. Two years ago, the group asked her to speak to a young girl that was struggling with her vitiligo. She removed her makeup for the conversation.
