Think you eat too much to have a problem?

Many active people (women included) eat 3000+ calories a day and stay plenty lean.

The recommended daily calorie intake is 2000 for women and 2500 for men.

The recommended daily calorie intake for weight loss is 1500 for women and 2000 for men.

A 5-year-old needs about 1400 calories or more every day.

The minimum daily calorie intake for a long-term diet without medical supervision is 1200 for women and 1800 for men. Eating less than that eventually leads to starvation mode (a real–yes, real–state of biological stress characterized by decreased metabolism, increased cortisol production, and heart, brain, organ, bone, and muscle damage).

A 2-year-old needs about 1000 calories or more every day.

Most people can’t even imagine eating 1000 calories in a day. You’ll get 1,357 Google results if you search for the exact phrase “1000 calories is way too low” or “1000 calories is way too little”…but you’ll get even more results if you Google the same phrases for 1200 calories, because few people consider dipping below 1200.

A 3-digit daily calorie intake puts you at high risk for binge-eating, slowed metabolism, bone and muscle loss, nutritional deficiencies, gastrointestinal issues, infertility, hair loss, mood swings, and depression. Oh–and sudden death.

900 calories is less than what a completely sedentary, 5'0", 80 lb, 70-year-old woman burns daily (keeping in mind that your metabolism slows with age).

A very low calorie diet, also known as a starvation diet, is 800 calories a day or less. It is prescribed by doctors to obesity patients who need to lose weight quickly, is specially formulated to be nutritionally complete, and is monitored by medical professionals to prevent sudden cardiac arrest and death. It is considered an extreme diet.

600 calories a day or less is literal starvation.

500 calories is less than the daily calorie needs of the average 1-month-old.

400 calories is less than the daily calorie needs of the average newborn.

300 calories is less than what the adult brain alone burns every day.

I’ve noticed there are fewer butterflies just in the past few years.

Also bees. There aren’t as many bees.

Also far fewer fireflies.

Used to be even 10-15 years ago there would be patches of sidewalk next to gardens that sometimes you couldn’t walk on once in a while because they were just covered in butterflies sunning themselves between trips to the flowers.

Like there were times I would walk past some spots and it’d be like a movie with this wave of small butterflies that would fly up, disturbed by my passing.

Used to see lots of fireflies, too.

Now it’s a rare treat to see multiple butterflies at once, and lightning bugs are much fewer and far between.

It’s sad.

Y’know what’s funny?

I’m a grassland ecologist. I am intimately familiar with the collapse of insect populations – part of my earliest research was on the impact of insect population declines on grassland birds (it’s bad, fam).

But I never connected the way I can now drive ten hours across the prairies without needing to clean my windshield with said declines until I sat in on a native bees workshop last week, and the speaker pointed out the change.

So you know. That’s concerning. I drove across Canada last fall and just realized that I only had to stop and clean the windshield once.

If you want to help, here are some things you can do for bugs in general:

- The Xerces Society is a primarily US-based non-profit dedicated to conserving invertebrates; they support research, and run a lot of public outreach events, including seminars and citizen science projects. They could use your dollars or your time.

- get involved with your local naturalist or conservation society; there are a heck-ton of these that are often linked to specific areas or watersheds, and they can always use help (in AB there’s the Alberta Native Bee Council, for example)

- cut out pesticides in your garden; a significant part of this decline is related to the fact that pesticides kill indiscriminately, and have a tendency to travel long distances from the point of application

- plant native species; insects (especially butterflies and other pollinators) are often specialized on native species for food or shelter, and without these native species they don’t do as well even if they can use another non-native plant

- if at all possible, reduce or eliminate lawn space; in ecological terms, well-kept grass lawns are only slightly better than concrete - they don’t provide habitat or food to most species. if you absolutely have to have a lawn, see if you can swap it for another ground-cover (preferably a native species). if you have to have a lawn-lawn, leave it as long as you’re allowed - longer grass at least provides habitat for some species (especially leave it long as you go into winter and wait as long as you can to cut in the spring - overwintering habitat is critical).

- if you can, don’t rake up your fall leaves. If you have to rake them up, store them in open bags or spread them on flower beds until spring - lots of baby bugs spend the winter under those leaves.

- build a bug hotel; if you’re in a cold climate (like Canada), make sure it’s at least 8-12″ deep so that things can overwinter.

1. being cold. all. the. time. you have to sleep with at least two blankets.

2. lanugo. think it’s cute to have thick hair ALL over your body??

3. that cute ass you had? it’s gone.

4. crying all the time

5. shaky hands, shaky arms, shaky legs, shaky everything.

6. you disappoint basically everyone important to you

7. it’s not cute to get smashed after one drink. it’s embarrassing.

8. forgetting everything. why did i walk into this room? where did i put my phone? why did i put my deodorant on the kitchen counter?

9. chewing food literally feels like you’re eating a live slug.

10. all those friends you love? you’ll basically never see them because you’re too afraid that they’ll suggest going out for lunch or try to give you food.

11. goal weights? not a thing. no matter how low your weight is, you’ll never be satisfied

12. this disorder literally kills you slowly, from the inside out

13. you have to sleep with a thick blanket or pillow between your knees because the feeling of your bones pressing against each other is too painful

14. your whole life feels like it’s a haze

15. concentration goes out the window. your grades will go down, you might even fail a class because for some fucking reason not eating is more important than getting a degree. think about that.

16. treatment is inevitable if you don’t get it under control yourself. and treatment is the worst experience you could possibly have – people FORCING you to eat, lots of crying, and its fucking expensive

17. you are so wasteful. all that healthy food you bought? you’ll eventually get to a point where you can’t even eat that and it just rots in your fridge.

18. it gets to a point where you care more about the number on the scale than your own fucking family

19. all your free time will be spent running. or walking. or working out. anything to burn off the calories you did (or didn’t) eat

20. eventually 50 calories is too much for one day

21. at a certain point, a size 0 is too big and all clothes look ill-fitting, not cute and baggy.

22. YOU ARE NOT IN CONTROL. no matter how much you think you are, you’re not. you’re a slave to your own brain.

23. YOU ARE A LIAR. you lie to your family, to your therapist, to your friends, and there’s no undoing that. once people know you’re lying, they’ll never believe you again.

24. this disorder does not make you special. it makes you sick. and it makes you look selfish and weak to other people. that’s the reality.

25. get help.

this is the reality of this disorder. it’s not cute. it’s not fun. it’s addicting. and it ruins your life. that’s it. it’s an illness and you have to see it for what it is.

Reblog if you started worrying about your weight before you were fourteen.

push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the sun rise.

push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable.

get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. sit and eat it and do nothing else.

stretch. start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. roll your head. stretch your fingers. stretch everything.

buy a 1L water bottle. start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice.

buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. no detail is too small.

strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. put a massive scoop of scented fabric softener in there and wash. make your bed in full.

organise your room. fold all your clothes (and bag what you don’t want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. light a beautiful candle.

have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck.

push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. bring your dog and observe the dog’s behaviour. realise you can learn from your dog.

message old friends with personal jokes. reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you don’t follow through. push yourself to follow through.

think long and hard about what interests you. crime? sex? boarding school? long-forgotten romance etiquette? find a book about it and read it. there is a book about literally everything.

become the person you would ideally fall in love with. let cars merge into your lane when driving. pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. stick your tongue out at babies. compliment people on their cute clothes. challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. then two. then a week. walk with a straight posture. look people in the eye. ask people about their story. talk to acquaintances so they become friends.

lie in the sunshine. daydream about the life you would lead if failure wasn’t a thing. open your eyes. take small steps to make it happen for you.

This is all really good advice for dealing with long term depression and anxiety. It’s not gonna magically cure you, but I’ve pushed myself to incorporate a few of these things into my day to day routine and it helps

This year is even worse. But not only for the LGBTQ+ people.

People are scared to go out and be themselves. Because if they show their true identity, they will be in massive danger.

PIS „Law and Justice” (the political party that rules our country at the moment) considers the removal of one of the legal abortion laws. We’re talking about a situation when the fetus is badly damaged. Very clever of them if we look at the fact that it is almost 98 percent of legal abortions in Poland. X

The leader of the anti-abortion initiative, Kaja Godek, argued during the parliamentary debate that the defense of life is enshrined in the constitution and described any abortion as “torture.”

“Abortion is a pandemic that is far worse than the coronavirus,” Godek said. “It produces more victims and all of them die.” X

There is also very “nice” clip of her saying “Lesbians, gays and other perverts, stay away from Poland.” She also fights to ban all pride parades across the whole country. X

If that didn’t convince you yet, how fucked up the situation was, how about criminalisation of sexual education? Yeah..I know..

PIS is trying to make a law where you can go to jail for even 3 years for teaching children about sex and other important stuff they have to understand at some point in their life.

“The proposed change will provide legal protection for children and young people against sexual depravity and demoralization, which is developing at a dangerous pace and affects thousands of the youngest Poles through the so-called sex education. Responsible for "sex education" of the environment enter other educational institutions in Poland, awakening children sexually and promoting homosexuality, masturbation and other sexual activities among students.” X

You want more? Okay. What about a boy named Jan from Jordan who has posted a modification of the emblem on Facebook, adding LGBT rainbow colors in the background. He’s 16. “I wanted to show that it is worth loving and respecting each other without prejudice" The case was reported to the Police. They arrested him and told him he has to say sorry for what he’s done and threatened him that they’ll send him to a correctional institution. X

People here are scared, I am scared. I don’t have the power to do anything yet because I’m just a kid in the eyes of adults. And you may ask “what can I do?”

And all I’m asking for is this:

Please be loud and stay proud of yourself. Talk about the situation in Poland. Talk about how fucked up this is. We can’t let PIS just get away with all of this. Not again. Please. 7. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

8. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.
