So for my book reading goal next year I think I'm going to attempt to read a lot of iconic/classic/influential manga series everybody should know, and I'd love to get your recommendations if you have them! Pls comment them here, even the really obvious ones, chances are I probs have not read it yet

THE MANGA REC LIST

in order of date released (and with the number of volumes listed on Wikipedia in brackets.. I will keep this list updated with my progress through the volumes... "dnf" means I gave it a shot, but didn't finish it for one reason or another):

I'm going to try to post some final thoughts about each manga series after I finish the ones on my master manga rec list btw

NEON GENESIS EVANGELION (1994-2013) - Yoshiyuki Sadamoto

(☆☆☆☆) Stunning artwork, memorable characters, intensely melancholic vibes and angsty surrealistic nightmare situations to immerse yourself in. My love for Shinji was the main thing keeping me invested all throughout. Even when I was finding the series a bit overwhelmingly depressing or at times confusing to follow, he always felt very genuinely real and vulnerable and sympathetic to me. I've rarely cared more about a comic protagonist or wished more for them to find that little piece of happiness and purpose and autonomy to finally call their own!

The core appeal of Willy Wonka is that he's a nigh-omnipotent maniac who uses his near limitless powers over reality to trick shitty people into killing themselves. You can't make him the protagonist of a whimsical coming of age tale - you have to treat him like Jason Voorhees, or Dracula, or any other horror icon. Give him some new victims and new interesting kills and set him loose, that's all audiences want.
