you mean to tell me this isn’t exactly what happened when Tim’s parents died?
I think a lot of the people you are mentioning are often times bitter about how wishy washy DC has been with Tim. If I had my way he could go by Raptor (saw some cool fan concepts for a suit for him with that name). But sadly a lot of people have forgotten Tim is very much so his own character not *insert XYZ character here* 2.0. Same with how people seem to have forgotten Damian is not supposed to be Dick Grayson 2.0 or Bruce Wayne 2.0.
Isn't Raptor a Nightwing villain?
I get to some degree where these people are coming from. Coming up with an original name, costume and unique concept that would make Tim stand out again isn't easy. On the other hand being creative is supposed to be DC's job.
Yeah, whenever someone says "x is just like y" they are probably wrong. Even if two characters do indeed have a similar personality, arc or niche, you will always find differences when you stop looking at them at a surface level.
I don't get why people are already discussing adult identities for Damian so much. The character is 14. Dick and Tim were around 18 when they originally left the Robin mantle (Jason and Steph died, so I'm not counting them for this), Damian should still get to have a few years as Robin before we start thinking about an adult identity.
Maybe it just me, but seeing a lot panels of Morrison’s run make me wonder how Damian didn’t commit patricide or matricide towards his parents.
Perhaps because he is dc cash cow, but I think Damian saying “Go fuck yourself” to his parents would work in some runs. Why is Bruce such a insufferable father? Like Jesus is he a flaw hero or no?
At least in Bruce's case I don't even mind him being a flawed father that much (even when DC often pushes it too far).
Batman is canonically a hero obsessed with his mission and a complicated, difficult person overall. Him not being a perfect father makes a lot of sense to me and it has a lot of interesting story potential.
What I do mind is that DC is constantly writing him as flawed (or in some cases downright abusive) and then just acts like they didn't just do that and don't need to adress it. In some cases they even try to bend over backwards to convince you that Bruce was actually right for being a massive jerk and he's one of the greatest people on earth, so the person he was an ass to should actually apologize to HIM!😅
And even that I could tolerate to some degree if it wasn't so blatant that other characters who aren't clear-cut good and kind too get bashed by the writers (AND the fandom) for things Batman also did.
The problem isn't that the characters are flawed and do dumb shit, the problem is that writers and fans often don't even try to be fair about it when it comes to these flaws and mistakes.
I have similar feelings when it comes to Alfred. I actually find the take that in a lot of stories Alfred can be read as enabling Bruce or as trying to convince the batkids to forgive Bruce after an argument mostly to maintain the peace in the family/team for Bruce's sake without really resolving anything that caused the argument in the first place very interesting. It is something I have noticed in several comics I read too and I would love to see the writers adress it more.
But a lot of people react to Alfred doing that by acting like Alfred is a flawless grandpa figure who always just wants to best for the batkids and simply dismiss all the stories where Alfred is not that perfect grandpa.
And to some degree people dismissing questionable actions by characters in a story would be fine...if people didn't have the tendency to then simply blame other characters to an unfair degree or straight up incorrectly.
Like, one reason why I feel it was so easy for DC to retcon it so that Alfred didn't cause his own death by choosing to lie to Bruce about having escaped from Bane or acting like Alfred had always supported Damian so his loss was what caused Damian to go rogue (even though Alfred showed zero sympathy for Damian in the one story where Alfred talked with Damian about Bruce and Damian's conflict prior to the retcon) is because it fits people's vision of who they want Alfred to be.
They don't want Alfred to basically commit suicide because he was written to not believe that Bruce would be able to rescue him AND the city this time and they don't want to acknowledge that Alfred wasn't this perfect supportive grandfather to Damian after Damian stopped coming home to Wayne Manor.
Sadly that leads us to a situation where a lot of people (and DC) are 100% fine with retconning it so Alfred died because of Damian's actions and Damian fans who were very upset by the way Alfred treated Damian in Teen Titans will never get any kind of closure for it.
I never thought about it this way before reading @danny-chase's posts, but...yeah Tim wasn't even running around as Robin when Alfred gave the job to Damian. He put on the cowl because Dick at first didn't want to. Huh.
Also, I'm not reading any Marvel books, never have. But as a woman I'm kind of weirded out by people (especially dudes on reddit) being totally fine with the male heroes having tons of female love interests that they flirt with seemingly no matter what their relationship status currently is.
But the second the perceived "main girl" of a major hero like Spiderman or Batman gets a love interest that isn't them they seem to lose their mind and start an online shitstorm.
Idk, it just makes me very uncomfortable.
fics that are always going like "damian's past certainly explained his actions but it wasn't an excuse for his behaviour" YES IT IS!!! Shut the fuck up!!!
You literally forgot Cass and Steph existed for the majority of the New 52 era😅
And if we're REALLY strict then Bruce has also forgotten a whole ass dead adopted son/ward:
Lance was kinda speedrunning Damian's original arc in one issue.
On my readthrough of Batman comics from around 2006-2009 I was very suprised when I found out that there was a sort of epilogue by Paul Dini to Ressurection of Ra's al Ghul where Ra's comes to Gotham to get revenge on Bruce for the previous events:
I thought it was very lame. Ra's is treated as a pathetic loser and Bruce comes across as way too sinister and cruel.
Plus I went into this thinking "oh, is this where Bruce will finally express his thoughts about his situation with Damian and Talia, this looks like a fitting place to do that" and I guess you can read Bruce wanting to protect Talia and Damian from Ra's as well into this if you really want to. But in the text Bruce only really talks about being mad that Ra's assassins invaded his home in Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul and that Ra's is a danger to Batman and his allies in Gotham.
He's not explicitly motivated by a wish to protect Damian and Talia or to get revenge for what Ra's did to them.
I prefer it when Bruce and Ra's are written to have some respect for each other despite being enemies and when Ra's desire to save the planet and his care for his family is treated as genuine (even if often very misguided) instead of just Ra's trying to cover up his selfishness.
He is a villain, but he is interesting because he has noble qualities. In a lot of ways he and Bruce have the same goals and are very similar when it comes to skills, intellect, resources and dedication to their cause. Ra's just simply puts the planet over humanity while Bruce isn't willing to sacrifice anyone.
I also just love guys trying to defend things like Starfire wearing almost nothing in some designs by saying she needs solar energy to charge her powers.
So does Superman, why isn't Clark only wearing a speedo?
We could end the "trunks or no-trunks on Superman's suit" debate by getting rid of the suit and only leaving the trunks.
-digs through my old DeviantArt account-
I think the belly-titty window combo was quite tasteful. Younger me was onto something.
I mean, the weird cut-outs totally make sense, they allow him to charge more solar energy and Clark's skin is practically invulnerable, so he has no real need for protective clothing.
The speedo allows him max freedom of leg movement and irl competetive swimmers often wear speedos to be more hydrodynamic, which I'm 100% sure is absolutely applicable to aerodynamics as well, so it will totally help Clark fly faster.
The five inch heels allow Superman to tower over his enemies even when he's not flying, the heels can be used as weapons and in early 17th-century Europe, high heels were a sign of masculinity and high social status.
So, yeah. A totally practical costume to fight in with no hidden sexual agenda at all. Good job!
Honestly it kind of looks like Powergirl's costume with the boob window:
and this Huntress costume:
Had a child and gave it to Superman to raise.
I need DC to bring back Jack Drake so Tim can complain about his dad to orphans again
Best if Jack gets canonically brought back to life and it's acknowledged that he used to be dead so Tim is doing his usual self centered complaining like "Yeah I'm glad he's back but it's such a big change and I have to go back to lying to him again and what do I tell him about everything -- "
Jason, Dick, and Bruce, who have dead parents that have never been brought back to life: 🖕
You ever remember what happened to Talia in Death and the Maidens and cry because Talia really never got any sense of closure after? Me too.
Talia trusted Nyssa. She considered her as a close friend. And probably the first person she trusted after leaving her father and the league
And for Nyssa to have been faking it the whole time, in order to lure her sister just breaks me
It was such a major turning point for Talia because it turned her into a villain for her appearances afterwards and like
The fact that the trauma is never addressed later and is basically shoved under a rug and everyone gets the impression that Talia has always been like that bothers me so much
She was just so broken. I feel like DC just left an open wound with her after DATM and never bothered to sew it back up
This is really one of the most disturbing stories I’ve ever read in comics, and the fact that it was never really mentioned or explored again really is evidence of how little DC cared about Talia at that point in time.
I still think they told Rucka to make her evil and he did what her could to make it make sense, but they didn’t bring it up again because... they just wanted her to be a villain, they didn’t care how it happened.
Just got hit with the realization that Batman and Robin (2023) will be the first comic to have Damian be fully stationed in Gotham City since the previous B&R book ended in 2015. Every other on-going book he had since then either had him traveling the world while barely touching Gotham or San Francisco for some reason (Teen Titans).
So that’s 8 whole years without (the real) Robin being present in Gotham while a certain manbaby is impersonating him.
The way DC has treated Damian until very recently is kind of insane when you consider:
- He’s the son of their most popular character
- He’s Robin
- His heritage is extremely diverse and DC has been trying to at least look more diverse in recent years
- He actually sells
This character should be SAFE!
Why did they try to turn him into a villain for several years? Why did they try so hard to keep him away from Gotham? Why do they insult and let him fail so much when other, even way less popular characters, constantly get their egos stroked?
I don’t get it. What was the logic behind that?😅
I didn't even think about this at first, I only saw other people talking about this online, but considering that Batman #136 ends like this:
and Knight Terrors comes next, could it be that the whole family dinner was Bruce already being stuck in the nightmare realm?
In that case Damian thinking he was on patrol with his dad before he got stuck in the nightmare realm is kind of sad:
Like, we already knew he was already in the nightmare realm at this point, but Batman #136 would confirm that Damian really wasn't out with Bruce before all the Knight Terror stuff happens.
Also...seating can be very meaningful. There is a reason why there were many (sometimes even violent) arguments in history about who got to sit close to a king and on which side.
Zdarsky strongly focuses on Tim and Tim's importance to Bruce and Dick is Bruce's oldest child and ally so they get the seats closest to him. Barbara is both important to Bruce as Oracle and she's close to Dick, so she gets the spot next to him. Stephanie is still close to Tim and Cass is close to Stephanie so they get the seats next to each other. Jason has the most distanced relationship with Bruce so he is seated as far away from him as possible. Which leaves Damian and Duke. With Duke you can argue that he was in a team Cassandra for some time, so sitting next to her makes sense. But Damian...he doesn't really have a close relationship with Barbara and he has a really rocky relationship Jason. His relationship with Duke was hinted to be kind of positive, but it was never really developed further. He's also seated far away from his father.
Idk, I just...I was curious to see where Damian would be seated at the table and was kinda sad when I saw where he ended up.
