Sand Tufas

You could be forgiven for thinking that the otherworldly rock formations in these pictures come from another planet, or from a sci-fi movie perhaps. But they’re actually called sand tufas and they come from right here on earth.

A tufa is a peculiar form of calcium carbonate, and they’re created when calcium-bearing freshwater springs well up through alkaline lake water (which is rich in carbonates). The carbonate and calcium combine and, over centuries, these elements form unusual spires, towering columns, and strange cauliflower-shaped mounds which can reach heights of up to nine metres (30ft). Tufas can only form underwater, and they’re only exposed when lakes are drained or dry out over many years. Check out this collection of pictures compiled by Bored Panda to see these curious formations for yourself.

Dear Archy are there examples for staircase houses where the main living area is the staircase and the composition of the intermediate landings?

Avatar

What you describe is a typical split level house like the on the section included above. Any stair can fit that role as long as the two sides of the residence have half a level difference between floor finish elevation.

Here are some examples of stairs that play a starring role in the design of the residence:

Bookcase Staircase Levitate

New Kyoto Town House Alphaville Architects

Bookcase Stair Maria Marta

Panorama House Moon Hoon

Arquitectura en Movimiento Workshop

Casa G Francesco Librizzi

Treetop Cabin in Sweden

Snøhetta has completed a treetop cabin for the Treehotel in northern Sweden, featuring charred-timber cladding and a suspended net for observing the Northern Lights.

Set 10 metres above the forest floor in the crown of a tall pine tree and supported by 12 columns, The 7th Room provides views out over Swedish Lapland, to the Lule River and of the aurora borealis.

It is one of six cabins that make up the Treehotel – a collection of guest suites all contained within treehouses.

Okay literally it’s just we’re your hip bones stick out and you don’t have any fat to fill the area.

My hips look like the left and I have no noticeable dip, which is what the previous anon was asking about “violin” hips.

It’s totally normal to have either.

Tonight on “Things I’ve never considered for beauty standards” apparently your hip shape is also something you gotta feel bad about. No seriously this is blowing my mind. So I was asked if I had “violin” hips no idea what it was until I googled it. It’s when your hip bone doesn’t have fat covering it/under it so you have a hip dip. A few people on tumblr have messaged me saying it’s considered a desirable trait to have no dip, which is fucking me up cause I don’t have a dip but every one I can remember that I dated has HAD hip dips (regardless of gender) and I always thought I was weird for not having them. In fact I thought I had “love handles” because no matter what undies or pants I wear they dig into my skin and fat in that area and my mom has made rude comments about me being fat because of this but all along it’s considered attractive??? Beauty standards are fucking weird like I gotta worry about what my feet look like, my skin, HELL EVEN MY BOOTY HOLE LIKE????

that’s crazy 😐 i’ve always been super self conscious about my hip dips. since when was it a desirable trait?!

I hadn’t even considered the shape of hips being more or less desirable. But my mom has the dips but I don’t so when she made comments about me having love handles it always made me feel the opposite, like my hips should have less fat on them of be thinner like hers. I never considered the dips a bad thing?? It’s weird how you can be raised to believe your fucking bones and body are considered unacceptable.

I guess I should say consciously considered because now that I look back on it I definitely have felt bad about having the rounded hips and no hip dip. Like I wear my pants or shorts up higher so they don’t rest on the wider part of my hips so they look slimmer, I wear primarily black pants. I always have thought I’m too wide. But a lot of it is tied to the fact that I thought I had to have my mom’s hips. She always used to say growing up “you’re not built like me you’re built like your dad, solid.” because I gain weight in my hips, butt, and thighs only. I got no titties and I don’t gain the weight in my waistline but the lower half of me didn’t match her so she made me feel it was a bad thing.
