honestly evaluate your blog. what kind of blog do you want to have? what kind of followers do you want? what’s your goal?
wanting to just post random things can work for some people, but it’s not the most efficient way to get followers. if that’s followers are goal, consider having a thread that keeps your blog together, like black and white, pastel, kawaii, gore, vintage… people like to know what they get when they follow someone.
focus on making your blog visually appealing. pick a good layout for your blog! if all your pictures are hot pink, don’t go with, say, a neon green and yellow background. know the image you want to project!
interact with people, and make yourself someone users want to follow! if you want someone to follow you, send them messages! but never be blatant. if someone sends me a message, i almost always check out their blog. but if someone says, “hey, will you follow me?” i instantly want to follow less, even if i love the blog. an honest question will always get you farther than kissing ass or just… wanting something. i hate when people only message me when they want something!
keep your blog as on-topic as possible. remember that when you have fifty followers, people are probably following you for your content, not your personality. as your follow count grows, people will be more and more interested in you! so long, long posts about your personal life? hold off on posting them till a bit down the line. but short, relatable posts a few times a day? go for it!
BE NICE. seriously. mean will get you noticed, but it won’t really get you long-term followers. if you do want to be mean, at least be funny about it. a mean response gif makes you more likable than a long text post about all the reasons the asker needs to kill themselves. but even then, know where the line is. sometimes things deserve sincere responses.
don’t try to make yourself look more popular than you are. if you publish every ask saying “nice blog,” you look like someone who’s trying to pretend they’re tumblr famous. respond privately more often than publicly; your followers will thank you!
but really, remember to be yourself. it’s too hard to keep a lie running. for awhile, i tried to seem more depressed than i was because i thought it would help me in the black and white community. but i think people started to identify with me more when i was just… honest.
everything i’ve said is just a guideline. if you want 100,000 followers as opposed to 1,000, you’re going to need to do things a little differently than the average user! keep the guidelines in mind, but know the right times to break them. and let me tell you, you never stop counting followers. i honestly wish i hadn’t gotten as many followers from sexy sweaters because i feel like people don’t follow me for my content. make tumblr meaningful to you. you could follow every single tumblr user that follows back, and probably get thousands of followers. but trust me, it won’t mean anything unless people actually like and respect your blog.
Staring out the cold gray window, Hades moves only his eyes as a bird darts past. Dark purple colors the skin under his eyes, and his bottom lip is split and starting to bleed again from his constant gnawing of it despite the pain.
The bird lands on the sill outside the window and Hades gives a low growl in his throat, smacking his hand hard against the glass to scare it off before resting his head on his hand again. “I said fuck off, you little shit,” he murmured darkly to himself, knowing how fond his younger brother was of taking different forms to visit the mortal realm. That bird couldn’t possibly be just a bird. It had to be Zeus, checking up on him again.
