There are these things that I like about being an adult
It doesn’t happen often.
You make a mistake that you think is okay.
Someone else disagrees. Worse, they are hurt.
You are both very invested in your own view of things.
You argue and, while you don’t get nasty, you and they get the feeling that the other is biting their tongue. Neither of you is happy.
Still, nobody makes an unforgiveable remark. You force yourself to keep talking. Talking, not yelling.
You suddenly get their point of view, and are able to acknowledge the mistake. Because you understand how you’d feel on the other side.
Suddenly, your adversary is offering help to fix something you shouldn’t have done to them in the first place.
You gain more respect for them and realize that, yes, you can respect yourself for matching a suitable amount of level-headedness.
At least neither of you has decided to “take your ball and go home”.
