World Book Night 2013

A special World Book Night edition of my first novel LOOKING FOR ALASKA is one of the 32 books being handed out for free today as part of World Book Night U.S.  Over half a million books will be given out in the U.S., U.K., Germany and Ireland today alone, so have a look at the WBN Facebook page and see if there are any events near you! Neil Gaiman will be at the Cambridge Public Library with Lisa Genova and Vanessa Diffenbaugh, Ann Patchett and James Patterson will be at Parnassus Books in Nashville and there’s loads more going on throughout the evening.

Over 25,000 volunteers are taking part in World Book Night U.S. in 6,200 towns and cities across the country, and while the event is intended to create more readers, it’s also an opportunity to share your favorite books with people you already know. If you pick up a free book today and you’re a keen reader, think about maybe passing it on to a light reader or a non-reader.

You can find out more about World Book Night U.S. on the official website and on their Facebook page

“If something is popular it can still be good. Just ask Shakespeare. Or the Beatles. Or peanut butter.”

30 Things to Tell A Book Snob, by Matt Haig. I do believe someone (well, lots of people, sadly) just got told.

“Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman are delighted, thrilled, honoured and touched that Good Omens has been picked as a World Book Night choice: “We love books, and think that a Night during which people give each other books is the best kind of Night there could be. We wish that there had been Nights like World Book Night when we were younger. Unfortunately, there weren't, and we had to make our own entertainment, which is probably why we wrote Good Omens. But, hurrah! World Book Night! Give each other books. Especially ours. Every word lovingly inserted by craftsmen. We thank you. P.S And while you're about it try writing books yourself, it worked for us!”

World Book Night

theprettybooks.wordpress.com

World Book Night took place for the third time in 2013, but it was the first time I participated. World Book Night is a campaign that first launched in the UK & Ireland in 2011 that simply aims to get ‘light’ readers or ‘non-readers’ to pick up a book. I thought I’d write a little post to tell you a bit about my experience of participating in World Book Night, which will hopefully encourage some of you to apply to be a giver when applications open for WBN 2014 a little later in the year.
