A Former Long Island Resident's Thoughts on the Current Power Situation on Long Island

I lived on Long Island for almost all my entire life, so I have seen quite my fair share of bad storms in my time on the island. I’ve seen snowstorms as late as March and April, for crying out loud. So to first start out this post, my thoughts and condolences go out to everyone on New York, Long Island, and New Jersey and anywhere else that have lost everything and everyone to Hurricane Sandy and Winter Storm Athena.   However, that isn’t really the topic of this post. This post is more about the power situation that the area has been conflicted with ever since the storms hit two weeks ago. there are some Long Island residents that still don’t have any power, and many are starting to heavily criticize the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) for not doing enough to reestablish power in their jurisdiction. However, there are some libertarian and conservative minded people who think that LIPA should take their time bringing back power to the people and that the citizens should have taken to personal responsibility in the face of danger. I am about to take the middle ground on this whole situation by saying, yes; we should tell more people how to properly prepare for a storm. However, LIPA has a duty to the people on Long Island to provide them power. (provided that they pay their power bills on time, of course.) I’ve looked at LIPA’s Facebook page today and there was comment after comment after comment of people saying that they have told LIPA that their power is out but they haven’t done anything two weeks later. however, all of this hoopla can be explained by one thing: back in 2006, new york state comptroller Tom DiNapoli said in an independent report that LIPA was not ready to handle a mass power restoration, citing that LIPA cut their budget for maintenance and tree trimming. In this report, DiNapoli also cited that LIPA uses antiquated equipment and lacks oversight from the state. So in closing, i don’t even know who to be pissed at: LIPA for cutting their budget at the cost of the wellfare their citizens, or the NY state government for not putting enough of a leash of them so that they don’t screw over the people. All i know is, stop acting like such corporate assholes and give back Long Island their power!

banking on a 1-hour delay tomorrow
