Oh No, A White Person Did a Thing: A Tale of Tumblr Social Justice

White logic

-abducts you from Africa; tells you to go back to where you came from

-makes every effort to keep you poor; calls you lazy

-calls you dumb; uses your language, music, clothing, and inventions

-doesn’t like black girls/guys; rages when a black person doesn’t like white girls/guys

-is middle class Joe Schmoe; considers self to be above the president of the United States

-hates the word “nigga;” feels its necessary to be able to say the word “nigga”

-hates affirmative action because “people have to earn things;” sitting in a 10k a year private high school paid for by parents

-calls self an ally; tells everyone what to do

-two black people in the class; thinks the class is diverse

-wears snap-backs, sags pants, loves rap, refers to self as having swag; hates black people

-refuses to acknowledge the difference between Chinese/Japanese/Korean; says they are Irish/Scottish/German/French and gets upset when told that they are just white

-sees a tan white girl in an ad; complains that beauty standards favour POC

-claims they just want to grab an Asian and put them in pocket because of “cuteness;” rails against being objectified

-talks about sexism and oppression constantly; complains when someone talks about racism

-is a straight middle class white person; considers self expert on racism and oppression

-says racist, sexist, homophobic, ableist shit in the name of free speech; has a meltdown and tries to verbally police you when you criticize beloved fandom

“ When grassroots Black activists speak honestly about racism at colleges across this country, we are not met with open arms by administrators and faculty. And most certainly our calendars are not full for the rest of the year let alone for the next three to five. When we speak, we are often met by the deaf ear of white denial. When Tim Wise speaks, he gets applause, standing ovations, awards and proclamations. The fact that schools can’t “hear” us when I and other people of color speak but will search out and roll out the red carpet for Wise is a statement to a kind of racism that doesn’t get discussed much – if at all – in our work. Despite all of the white anti-racist presentations given over the years at colleges and universities across the country, institutional racism at these schools remains intact. All the while, activists of color continue to be muffled and marginalized. Even in the ghetto of race discourse we remain tenants and never owners of an analysis that is ours to begin with. ”

Word to the Wise: Unpacking the White Privilege of Tim Wise

If you have exclusively white friends

I don’t trust your ass, on principle. Too many white queer/leftist/feminist folks running around here talking about how they’re anti-racism but their hangouts look like a klan meeting. Hard pass.

Play

I will literally never understand why saying “white women” or “white people” is offensive or ~ reverse raycist ~ when white people literally only speak of POC in terms of their race i.e. “that Black guy”, “that Asian girl”, etc.
