Why Bathing Was Uncommon in Medieval Europe

todayifoundout.com

“Before the Middle Ages, public baths were very common, as was the general public regularly taking time to bathe in one way or another… However, over time, more and more restrictions appeared. Eventually, Christians were prohibited from bathing naked and, overall, the church began to not approve an “excessive” indulgence in the habit of bathing. This culminated in the Medieval church authorities proclaiming that public bathing led to immorality, promiscuous sex, and diseases…

For most lower class citizens, particularly men, this resulted in them completley forgoing bathing.  During this time, people tended to restrict their hygienic arrangements to just washing hands, parts of the face, and rinsing their mouths. Washing one’s entire face was thought to be dangerous as it was believed to cause catarrh and weaken the eyesight, so even this was infrequent…

Amazingly, this complete lack of personal hygiene in most of Europe lingered until around the mid-19th century.

actually, there are SEVERAL “white history” months a year. just because its not called “white history month” doesnt mean that its not there. #themoreyouknow

“In the early 1860s, the Irish displayed explicit signs of hostility toward blacks. Rational theory explains this hostility in terms of Irish workers' reaction to employers using blacks as strikebreakers. Indeed, a number of scholars explain the antiblack New York draft riots of 1863 in terms of the revolt of Irish workers against black strikebreakers. Fusfeld and Bates (1984, p. 17) contended that 3,000 Irish longshoremen in New York, who has lost a strike to black strikebreakers, led the antiblack draft riots. They feared that the Civil War would liberate more blacks, who would move north and take Irish jobs. This rational theory explains antiblack violence as arising out of black and white job competition (see Woodward 1951; Wilson 1980; Fredrickson 1982). The problem with the rational choice model is that is accepts the antiblack sentiments as a rational, natural, and sensible reaction to a real threat. The problem with antiblack violence in the North was similar to the problem in the South: The black threat was exaggerated. Irish workers had already displaced blacks in various jobs. Hence, blacks posed little threat to Irish workers as competitors. Moreover, the Irish faced stronger opposition from native-born White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (WASP) workers, who complained that the Irish were underselling WASP labor, and from other European immigrants, especially from German, Italian, Polish, Russian, and Scandinavian immigrants, throughout the rest of the 19th century. Many of these immigrants were willing to work harder for less money and had few qualms about taking Irish jobs. In the last half of the 19th and first decade of the 20th century, the black population in northern cities increased negligibly, whereas the immigrant populations rose dramatically. Indeed, in many cities, the proportion of blacks in the total population declined between 1860 and 1910. For example, in Detroit, blacks constituted 3.1% of the total city population in 1860, 1.7% by 1890, and 1.2% by 1910 (Geshwender 1979, p. 59). Yet although European immigrants posed a greater threat to them than black workers did, Irish workers focused their exclusionary efforts and violence at blacks. ”

Carter A. Wilson, Racism: from slavery to advance capitalism

I saw this argument on my dash earlier and I thought it would be a good time to start with the Pursuit of Whiteness series I was talking about in September as well as illustrated why the “Irish were upset because they had to compete with the blacks for jobs” seems like bullshit to me.

Happy White History Year everyone.

HOW ABOUT WE STOP SHAMING ANY RACE AND STOP MAKING SATIRICAL, SARCASTIC DIGS AT AN ENTIRE RACE BECAUSE OF THE HISTORY OF EVIL OR STUPID PEOPLE. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE WHITE TO BE EVIL OR STUPID, YOU KNOW. YOU JUST HAVE TO BE HUMAN.

Abolish Black History Month

I love it how, because white people question the need for “black history month”, the common racist will say “the other 11 months are for whites”, as if they totally missed the point. Not to mention the other 11 months are not for celebration of anyone’s race at all. If you repeat that shit, you’re fucking stupid and racist.

Since it’s fucking August, this must be all about white people! You know, since white people are all that exists any other time of the year except February. White people celebrate their heritage and culture all months of the year and any attempt to get a public recognition of such a culture is deemed racist simply for asking about it.

No matter what white people do or say, the goddamn blacks will take offense to it. Fuck’em

*spit*

update: After searching the internet, I still can’t find a good reason why there’s not a white history month. It seems people believe that “white history” is taught every day of the year, which is just false.

It’s trendy now to think that white people are racist, should feel guilty, and aren’t entitled to the recognition of their own culture. And if you bring it up, some asshole racist out there will say “Yeah, let’s celebrate what you did to the  Indians!” [revisionist history]

But seriously, I can’t find one intellectual reason. All the reasons offered for not having a white history month are illogical, anecdotal, and inherently false. The replies to the question are most often racist against white people themselves.

There is no black history month. There’s American history. Having a month set aside for blacks creates the sort of divide that perpetuates the hostility between the races. I don’t want a white history month. Clearly, I’m being facetious. Truthfully, I want to abolish black history month.

There should really be a white history month. Lets examine the history of white people destroying and erasing other cultures, investigate how much of the death and destruction caused by white people is for economic gain and explore all the ways in which white people have oppressed others, lied about it and covered it up throughout history which has led us to a place where white people have such a sense of entitlement we can’t see how we’ve catalogued the history of the world through white supremacist eyes.

What to Do if Someone Asks: ‘Why Isn’t There a White History Month?’

clutchmagonline.com

Three ways to respond:

- “History is white history. The ‘white’ is silent, like the ‘K’ in ‘Knowledge’”.

- “I agree, the celebration of white history should be confined to one month of the year.”

- “Every month is white history month”.

We can’t have a white history month because if we actually, truthfully exposed all the things white people have done over history, it would traumatize most students.

White history month: Abraham Lincoln

People love to throw Abraham Lincoln in black people’s faces because he freed the slaves. Abraham Lincoln was a racist. Say it with me now. Abraham Lincoln was a racist. He was anti-slavery, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a racist. He thought whites were superior to blacks.  He did not believe in black people having EQUAL rights under the law. He cared about black people having some rights under the law.

Lincoln was part of the Republican Party which was founded in 1854. The defining feature of this party was that it was Anti-Slavery. It acknowledged that the issue of slavery was tearing the country apart and the country could not progress until the issue was settled. In the minds of the opposing Democratic party, the issue was already settled—slavery forever. The Republicans and Lincoln tried to do what made everyone happy and held the country together. Hence the creation of the Missouri Compromise and other acts which allowed slavery in some states and banned it in others.

Lincoln was the 1860 presidential nominee for the Republican Party. He won the 1860 election over the divided Democratic party’s nominees John Breckinridge, Stephen Douglas, and John Bell. Democrats were like, “An anti-slavery president? OH HELL NO, we are not a part of this country!” And voila, southern states created the Confederacy. But Lincoln was like “No, no. The United States is going to be one country whether you like it or not.”  And so the Civil War happened. The purpose of the Civil War was to force the Southern States to continue of be a part of the US and follow US law. It was not fought to free the slaves. About half-way through Lincoln realized that he could not win the war and thereby unify the country unless he abolished slavery. So he abolished slavery. He did not, however, give black people equal rights/Civil Rights under the law.

Stop complaining that there’s no “White History Month”.

February: African-American History Month

March: Greek-American Heritage Month, Irish-American Heritage Month

May: Asian/Pacific-American Heritage Month, Jewish-American Heritage Month

June: Caribbean-American Heritage Month

September: Hispanic Heritage Month

October: German-American Heritage Month, Italian-American Heritage Month, Polish-American Heritage Month

November: American Indian Heritage Month

As an Irish- and Polish-American, I get two months to celebrate my “white history”. Many African-Americans don’t know their country of origin because “white history” took them from their country of origin, so their entire continent is represented. The entire races of black, Asian, and Hispanic people get only one month for their entire continent, when we celebrate our countries. Though Japanese and Chinese and Filipino cultures are very different, they only get “Asian-American Heritage Month”; though Egyptian and Nigerian and South African cultures are very different, they only get “African-American Heritage Month”; though Spanish and Brazilian and Mexican Cultures are very different, they only get “Hispanic Heritage Month”; though Inuit and Cherokee and Navajo cultures are very different, they only get “American Indian Heritage Month”. White Americans have combined these cultures together because we see them as the same. However, Italian and Greek and German and Polish and Irish cultures are seen as different and special enough for their own month.

Ever think that maybe Black History Month gets so much attention is that they deserve to have their contributions recognized, while ours are recognized every day?

I am white so if any PoC have anything to add or if I said something problematic please let me know and I’ll change this as necessary, thanks.

Why don't we get a white history month?

If you’re white and you’ve said this, congrats, you’re a white supremacist scum bag. The contributions of white people and white people in general are praised and glorified in school, the media and even in non-white countries 24/7 365 days a year. You don’t need a damn month. If you want more, when you already have so much is nothing short of narcissism, greed and you’re probably one ignorant fucker that doesn’t even know history that well. Every Black history month, many white people collectively throw tantrums about Black history month. I love how so many people forget 99% of the people they’ve learned about or will learn in white history class (better known as just ‘history’) is white.

The only question i want to ask white people that don’t like Black history month is…

That’s a damn lie. LIE! LIE! LIE! Stop lying. Google and you’ll see your ass is rong.

Why do we need a Black history month?

Name 10 Black people you’ve learned about in school history class that isn’t Malcolm X, Rosa Parks or MLK. I’ll wait.

Why can’t i be proud of being white?

White pride typically results (and is about) in genocide, rape and destruction. You can be proud of that if you wish
