Life guarding worries

I’m really stressing out about my job as a guard. The pool that I work at has only one guard on duty at a time. Now to some of you college kids this may seem normal, but really it goes against a lot of what the red cross says. My pool has only one guard on duty at a time. This prevents me from being able to do some lifeguard techniques successfully unless I am giving instructions to a random civilian. I know that the chance of a person actually getting a hangman’s fracture from diving is very slim, yet if someone did I do not have the proper support to help that person. There is no phone by the guard station and I would have to rely on a cell phone to call 911 unless I yelled to the person at the front desk which is like 100 feet away (and who may or may not be there). And if I took time to leave the pool to alert the front desk I would be wasting the time I could spend helping this person. I know most pool goers can handle yelling at someone to alert 911 but I don’t want to leave that up to chance. I know another lifeguard would really ease my worries and I am certain that the college I work for would not fork out the extra money to pay for two even though it could prevent a law suit.

Maybe I’m over thinking this, I just don’t feel safe working there. I would hate for a senseless death to happen because of a school trying to save money.
