Tumblr now has 50 million blogs, 20 billion posts

Tumblr has almost doubled in size since last fall. Back in September 2011, the blogging service hosted 28 million blogs containing a total of 10 billion blog posts. Today, Tumblr has passed 50 million blogs, and its users have produced more than 20 billion blog posts (according to Tumblr’s About page)Tumblr’s user base currently crams out around 55 million posts per day. While not quite at Facebook levels (on the other hand, what is?), the current pace still amounts to an impressive amount of content:

  • 637 posts per second
  • 38,194 posts per minute
  • 2.3 million posts per hour
  • 385 million posts per week
  • 1.65 billion posts per month
  • 20 billion posts per year

Google+ now has 25 million users, according to analytics firm comScore. That’s very impressive, especially considering that the site is working off an invitation-only model for expansion.

This new offering by facebook is being called ‘Talktime’, where facebook is giving phone credits ($1/Rs. 50) to the users in developing nations like India when they signup for the service from a mobile device. Not only that if the user invites one of his friend and inturn the friend joins the network, the person will get an additional Rs. 50 credit.

This drive by facebook will help it to maintain the pace in user growth which according to many reports in now flattening, Mobile and emerging markets are where facebook is most likely to get its new signups now.

Mobile is a really crucial strategy for Facebook and it has made some really nice improvements atleast in smartphone market with new updated apps. Albeit this new test called ‘Talktime’ will boost the total user base, the cost of user acquistion seems high as facebook till now have got all its growth organically.
