“...if I really reflect on how I, a Latina from Las Vegas, was able to become a scientist at an elite university, it wasn’t my own curiosity. It was the influence of a blackjack dealer who also happens to be my mother. ”

Anjelica L. Gonzalez, Ph.D, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Yale

“I believe that a mature civilised society ought to be funding universities properly through tax. Students should go to university for nothing because it's an investment that society's making in itself”

Meet an Organizer

Plovgh Pickup Point: The New School Campus, West Village

1. Could you describe a formative experience in your life that shaped your views of farms and food?

My view on farms and food has to really be explained as a gradual learning process that is constantly growing: courses I have taken at the New School dealing with sustainability, documentaries I have seen such as Food Inc. In general, I have become increasingly aware of what I eat, making small adjustments at a time, for instance only eating organic, free-range chicken.

2.  What motivated you to start a Plovgh Pickup Point in your neighborhood?

I received an email from my advisor, a Health Educator at The New School. She forwarded an email sent to a food professor. I emailed Plovgh and heard a response from Mallory. Soon after we met and within a semester’s time we organized a Plovgh pick-up at the University.  Within the University’s sustainable commitments, connecting to local produce is an important initiative worth implementing. Plovgh is an organization that will help students, staff, and faculty be able to pick up produce from local farms for extremely affordable prices. The first pick-up was very successful.

3. How does being a Plovgh Organizer relate to your work and interests?

Being a Plovgh Organizer relates to almost everything I do at the university and in my own personal life. At the university I work with the Office of Sustainable Facilities and Management as the President of Sustainable Cities, a graduate student organization. Members of our group are Green Fund recipients working on an energy competition within one of the residence halls. I am a team member of the Solar Decathlon at Milano, a resident advisor of the Green Floor, a compost advocate, and a Health Promotion Specialist focusing on the relationship between well-being and environmental sustainability.

Panel approves measure forcing non-athletes, average college students to pay $2,000 (Extra)

msnbc.msn.com

From MSNBC:

“Students at Arizona’s three state universities will have to pay — or borrow — at least $2,000 a year to get an education under terms of legislation approved by a House panel today.

Rep. John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, said students should have some “skin in the game.” He said students will take their schooling more seriously and be less likely to drop out if they have made an investment.

“I really believe that when something is given to you, you don’t have the appreciation of having put in some work,” agreed Rep. John Fillmore, R-Apache Junction.

He said $2,000 out of $9,000 annual tuition is not that big a deal. Even with books and fees, Kavanagh said that adds only another $1,500 a year.

Kavanagh said that would leave students with $14,000 debt after four years, “less than the cost of a Chevy Sonic.”

“And I personally believe that degrees from our universities are worth far more than Chevy Sonics,” he said. Anyway, Kavanagh said that is a small amount, as college grads earn anywhere from $500,000 to $1 million more over their lifetimes than those who do not have a higher education.

The vote came despite objections from students who said there are expenses beyond tuition. Room and board aside, they said they are forced to pay for gasoline, insurance and parking.

Welcome to life,” Rep. Michelle Ugenti, R-Scottsdale, told the students.
“I don’t understand why that should affect a modest $2,000 for your education,” Ugenti continued. “We all are thrust into circumstances and unpredictable life experiences.” […]

Is there a Republican in office anywhere in the United States in the year 2012 who is not an absolute jerk? These people just ooze with contempt. If you’d like to make your voice heard on this issue, you may do so here:

Even if you don’t live in AZ, please sign. Things that suck sometimes start in one state & spread to another. The Republicans test-drive these horrible ideas in one state to see if they can get away with it.

Personal Statement

Today, my friends are on the verge of completing their UCAS applications to apply to UK universities after our A-Levels. There were a bunch of boring forms to fill out & copies of past exam results, but the thing that interested me the most was the PERSONAL STATEMENT that they each had to write - in no more than 4,000 characters.

According to them, it’s basically an essay about yourself that stems anything & everything about yourself: from reasons to why you aim of enrolling in the UK to basic hobbies and interests - “cause the heads there would like to know about you”.

My friends wrote about how Law was their number one passion (well, they ARE going to enroll in Law!). They wrote about how they liked English football. And the jobs they had before they entered college. Quotes from famous people (John Lennon) or from people closest & dearest (“my grandmother”). And even their interests, such as debating.

Got me thinking if I were to write a personal statement IF I were to apply to the UK. That would be so exciting just to write for the fun of it! Haha. I may have never gotten a job in my life & my results suck balls, but I’ve probs have/had a lot of hobbies/interests in my life that I’m pretty proud of, such as:

  1. BALLET - 8 years & 2 gold medals
  2. SINGING - 3rd prize in a singing competition
  3. STORY-TELLING - 3rd place in an inter-school competition & various other wins in school
  4. MODELLING - few catalogs
  5. ACTING - got a role in a X’mas play once which aired on TV2, & was also in a few commercials
  6. CHEERLEADING - did it for a year
  7. PHOTOGRAPHY
  8. PHOTOSHOP
  9. BLOGGING/WRITING
  10. SONGWRITING
  11. POETRY*
  12. PSYCHOLOGY & THE HUMAN MIND - I’ve even unintentionally mindfuck myself a few times
  13. CREATING ABSTRACT ART - can’t draw faces or buildings, just abstract
  14. PLAYING DJ - <3 drum & bass, dubstep, techno, trance, [hybrid genres] electro/screamo
  15. WUSHU
  16. FASHION DESIGN - unfortunately, sewing is not my forte so my designs have always remained drawings
  17. FENCING
  18. JEWELRY MAKING - most particularly weaving bracelets :)
  19. BOWLING
  20. ROLLERBLADING
  21. BADMINTON
  22. ICE SKATING
  23. INTERIOR RE-DESIGN - well, I redesign small things like my drawers, shelves & stationary.
  24. MUSIC REVIEW
  25. DEBATING - proud with my double ‘semi-finalist’ title twice in a row :)
  26. CRIMINOLOGY - and basically, anything to do with the minds & lives of serial killers & mass murderers
  27. ABLE TO RECITE THE ENTIRE LIFE STORY OF THE 15TH/16TH CENTURY SCOTTISH CANNIBAL, SAWNEY BEAN - c’mon, that’s got to be quite an achievement!

That’s about all I can think of right now. I’ve always wanted to do more, like learn to play an instrument or another sport or anything relating to graphics design. Maybe even be a master of something for a change, instead of a Jack of many trades.

Plus, I seem to always quote Nosferatu or my fave songs right now. I’m not in the habit of quoting famous people with a billion Nobel Prizes or such. :/

Ah, when the time comes. :D

*I admit, it’s just a few rhyming couplets. Nothing so spectacular. LOL
