Why are we talking about Gifs? Is one trending on Twitter? Is it a girl bouncing on a trampoline without a bra again? Nope, it’s the inventor of the Gif, Steven Wilhite.
Steven Wilhite has been bouncing on a trampoline without a bra? Get your mind out of the gutter. He has been voicing his concern that we have all been mispronouncing the word “Gif” for the past two decades.
Have we? You mean people exist in this world who say the word “Gif” out loud? Yes. And they’ve been using a hard G when they’ve done it, like “gosh” or “gorilla” or “git”.
And presumably it’s supposed to have a soft G? That’s right, like “Germany” or “gin” or “Gee, does any of this even matter?”
Does it even matter? Apparently it does. Wilhite picked up a lifetime achievement Webby for his invention this week and took the opportunity to conclusively state that “It is a soft ‘G’, pronounced ‘jif’. End of story.”
Well, that’s us told. What does Gif stand for, anyway? Graphics Interchange Format.
But “graphics” starts with a hard G. Shouldn’t Gif start with a hard G too? Stop it, you’re only complicating things.
This website is going absolutely crazy over Yahoo buying Tumblr. Making jokes about it is all good and funny and honestly what tumblr is all about, but some shit is out of control. I swear, there is nobody more dramatic than people on tumblr. Yahoo has said repeatedly, they are not censoring the website, they are not changing anything, and they’re not removing the porn. Tumblr users are all upset because nobody likes change, so they’re literally making up lies to make this situation seem like the end of the world. Guess what? It’s not.
And to the people mad at David Karp for selling the website, please shut up. Seriously, just shut up. He isn’t a sell out. He didnt sell “us”. He sold a domain name and a bunch of htmls. He didn’t sell the friendships we’ve made or the posts we love or our blogs. Nothing is changing. And honestly, good for David! He’s a high school dropout. I bet he never would’ve imagined making a website and eventually selling it for $1.1 BILLION dollars. If you wouldn’t sell a website for that amount of money, that’s your call, but I’d do the same if I were in his position. So can we all please just shut the hell up about how Yahoo is ruining tumblr and David betrayed us blahblahblah???? Nothing has changed and David is doing what is going to be best for him in the long run. Honestly, 20 years from now, what do you think will be more helpful for him in life? A website which most/all of us may have abandoned, or a pocket full of money and guaranteed support for the rest of his life. Lets all just calm down and continue blogging, yeah?
