I really love Tristan and Tanner’s relationship in Most Popular Girls in School because FINALLY, there’s a gay relationship where one guy is more masculine than the other but it’s not really focused on and it’s definitely not an issue in their relationship. You have no idea how much it depresses me seeing a lot of mainstream gay couples be both either leaning towards the more masculine end of things (ie brokeback Mountain) or both are leaning towards the more feminine side of things (Glee I’m looking at you and your dumb pairing of Kurt hummel with more feminine broadway loving guys than anything) without any real differences in how they approach masculinity and femininity.

I really love the fact that even though Tanner is the ‘straight acting’ gay he doesn’t try to tell Tristan to acting so gay or try to reign in his flamboyance because wow, it’s a big part of Tristan’s personality. And despite their big differences in interests and hobbies, they still find middle ground to talk about guys and have a pretty healthy sexual lifestyle.

I really adore and appreciate that MPGIS acknowledges some gay guys love acting feminine and that they don’t really villanise him for that, but rather treating his flirtiness and stuff the same as any of the female characters’ sexualities are treated.

Like thank you Most Popular Girls In School for making a gay couple not be clones of each other, for making their sexuality a non issue and for showing them as people as fucked up as any other teenager in Overland Park.
