VICTORY: Transgender People Can Now Change Their Social Security Record’s Gender Identity
thinkprogress.orgToday marks an important victory for the transgender community, even though it may appear to be a small paperwork technicality. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced that it is now much easier for trans people to change their gender identity on their Social Security records. All that will now be required, according to the National Center for Transgender Equality, is for individuals to submit government-issued documentation reflecting a gender change, or a certification from a physician confirming they have undergone appropriate clinical treatment for gender transition.
This is a significant departure from the previous policy, which required documentation of complete sex reassignment surgery. Many trans people never undergo such procedures, either because they are too expensive, because they do not want to lose their procreative ability, or because it simply isn’t an important change for them to make to find authenticity in their identities. The SSA change eliminates this high standard for trans people to obtain the appropriate documentation for the gender that reflects how they live their daily lives.

- no one has to adhere to the social preconceptions of gender regardless of trans status, but people who do adhere to them are not weak or less deserving of respect
- there is no such thing as Trans Enough
- trans people can be transmisogynist, binarist, cissexist, heterosexist, racist, sexist, sizeist, ableist, and any other -ist, and their trans status does not make them immune to criticism
- trans people aren’t inspiration porn or pity porn
- it is okay to change gender labels multiple times because gender is fluid and it doesn’t make you a ‘special snowflake’ or whatever
- all pronouns are imaginary and invented so shut up about ‘weird’ pronouns
- respect pronouns, respect gender identities, don’t be an asshole

Social Security Administration no longer requires surgery to change gender marker
advocate.comThe Social Security Administration announced Friday they will no longer require proof of genital reassignment surgery in order for a person to change the gender marker on their Social Security card.
The SSA removed its requirement that transgender people wanting to amend their gender on a Social Security card provide proof of gender reassignment surgery, opting instead for more inclusive language simply mandating that a transgender person provide a passport or birth certificate reflecting their accurate gender, or a certification from a physician confirming that the individual has had appropriate clinical treatment for gender transition. The SSA’s revision brings its policy in line with changes made in the past three years by the U.S. State Department and Veterans Health Administration.
“Most people may not see this as a big deal, but transgender people know that this seemingly small technical change will protect their privacy and give them more control over their own lives” said Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, in a statement heralding the announcement.
The SSA reportedly also issued guidelines for officials to abide by when interviewing transgender people, such as correct pronoun usage and asking respectful questions. Amazing victory.
“When I went on testosterone, I was told a lot of troubling things. I was told that I would be angrier, more aggressive, and that I would find it harder to control myself. This is commonly referred to as ‘T Rage’. On a related note, I was also told that I would be less emotional, and that I would have more trouble expressing my emotions. This feeds right into the problematic narrative that suggests that the emotional ‘differences’ between men and women are a result of biology rather than socialisation and gender roles. The idea that injecting a synthetic hormone into myself makes me less responsible for my actions is not only blatantly ridiculous, it’s insulting.”

Association of Transgender Professionals will support gender diversity in the workplace
associationsnow.comThe Association of Transgender Professionals is a newly established group to support acceptance and inclusion of transgender people in the workplace.
In a recent survey, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the National Center for Transgender Equality found that 90% of trans people have felt somehow harassed at work. This group will work to educate people about the issues their trans coworkers might face and provide resources so trans professionals can succeed in their fields.
“ATP’s vision is to create inclusion for gender expression for all employees,” the association’s founding director, Denise Norris, said in a statement released on the organization’s Facebook page. “Our belief is that in the setting of the workplace it should not matter why or how an employee expresses their gender. What ultimately matters is that the employee can fulfill the duties of the job for which they were hired.”
The new association will focus on three main goals: acceptance, talent, and placement, or A.T.P. It will help promote the inclusion of gender-expression diversity in the workplace to increase awareness and equality, provide professional development and networking opportunities for transgender individuals, and help develop better recruitment methods so employers can tap the talent of this community.
