Painting and Media Representation
I am taking a self-directed painting class this semester, which means I get to paint whatever I want (yay!). Immediately, I thought of an idea. It is inspired by both @FeministDisney and @Toughtink. I loved the campaign, “This is what a Disney Princess Could Look Like”. The entries were so inspiring and it really showed why media representation is important. I entered two myself and Tough Tink, with her awesome skills, created a portrait inspired by one of my posts. It really touched me.
So I thought that for my painting series, I would use some of the entries of Feminist Disney’s campaign as inspiration. I have started a long list of possible seeds of inspiration. I may combine two or more of those seeds to complete a painting. In the end, I hope to a have a collection of Disney-esque princesses who go behind typical and safe Disney design.
But I need help. I want to make sure that I am respecting people’s identities and cultures when doing this series. I would love ideas and feedback into what I could do to make this fantastic. Below is a list of some of the possibilities. If you see something that jumps out at you, please let me know. If you don’t see something on the list, please let me know. I can’t guarantee I will use it all, but I definitely keep it in mind. I’ll also have my submissions open so that if someone would like to submit an idea or a picture, they can do that. I’ll start adding anything related the project under the tag, #Creating Your Disney .
Please share so I can reach as many people as possible . Let’s this, Tumblr!
