Bae looked young. He was still rather short. He still had most of his baby fat. He still had the rather scrawny frame of a young boy. Everything about him looked young except his eyes. His eyes looked very, very old and very, very tired. There was no hiding the many years he’d lived. 

His life had felt like a roller coaster ever since his father had left. He’d had many times when he’d felt happy and like he was living the best life he could have ever dreamed of, but other times he couldn’t find the strength other than sit in his bed and cry because in the end he was just a little boy who wanted his father. 

But things would get better now. Now he knew his father was and was heading there that very day. Bae would have his father again. They’d be together and everything would get better. 

That’s what he kept repeating in his head to find the courage to open the pawnshop door and step inside. Once he’d stepped inside, he opened his mouth to say something, but his mouth felt dry and his palms were sweating and his mind blanked, so instead he settled for standing there, shifting nervously from foot to foot as he waited for his father to notice him and say something.
