“i dont have the right voice or the right looks but i have twice the heart. figure that into your soundbyte or pull quote. you cant. been in hotels so much lately i cant remember the numbers on my door ever. my shower feels like the ocean but not in a fishy kind of way. more like washing off the sand, the waves breathing. id break on the shore for you, either way. --- you are however, truly imprinted on my mind. sometimes when i am thinking of you, i mean her, but usually i mean you. ”—Pete Wentz
Put your tinhat on and fasten your seatbelt before continuing this post:
Situation: Matt Fincham sleeps over at Grimmy’s house and wears Nick’s clothes the next day.
Nick’s reaction: Tell the full story on live radio plus talk about how they act like an old married couple and “imagine if matt fincham was your boyfriend.”
Situation: Harry arrives at the studio with Nick wearing what is most likely Grimmy’s sweater and which Grimmy promptly steals back and wears all day.
Nick’s reaction: Says (under extreme duress when cornered by Heat journalists at the Attitude awards) okay maybe that was Harry’s sweater but is quick to say they don’t raid each other’s closet or anything.
“Media corporations push us to become obsessed with entertainment products and profit heavily from our consumption, and then society turns around and tells we’re crazy for caring too much. I think that this shame drives many to police others behavior—don’t be THAT fan, if you’re too intense about your feelings then we’re all going to get it. I believe this shame is connected to how much bullying goes on in fandoms against anyone perceived to be a tinhatter.”—http://genderblinditem.tumblr.com/post/49096204224/lapelosa-genderblinditem-it-cant-just-be
I wrote a longer post album this album, but Tumblr went haywire on me and I lost everything that I’d written. Anyways, I’ve been listening to this record non-stop for the past couple of weeks and it’s one of the best that I’ve heard in a very long time. Tin Hat performing the rain is a handsome animal.
My Tinhatting Rant
I am going to make a lot of assumptions and generalizations in the next few minutes, so bear with that.
Tinhatting is widely known as coming up with shreds of “proof” to show that a certain ship is actually happening in real life. At least, that’s what the term started as. However, in my experience, it has started spreading further than that into the realm of any sort of major fandom conspiracy. I can think of a bunch off of the top of my head.
Tinhatting makes a lot of people pretty angry. This is something I’ve learned recently. I’ll be the first to say that tinhatters, from the outside, seem really crazy. I will also be the first to say (or assume, rather) that most of us tinhat for the pure fun of doing so. I have yet to run into a tinhatter who truly, honestly believes in what they are saying. I mean, on some level we all believe it or we wouldn’t be tinhatting it. What I am talking about, however, is that I have yet to meet anyone who will not at some point admit that they likely are not right, or that they are reading too much into little things.
I enjoy tinhatting. I do it for almost all of my fandoms. I tinhat everything from ships to reasons behind why Frank had a grapefruit for breakfast instead of toast. However, when it gets right down to it, I don’t actually honestly and truly BELIEVE what I am saying. I like to look at innocent gestures and say “OMG THIS IS TOTALLY PROOF THAT X.” It’s fun. It makes fanfiction interesting. It keeps fandom on its toes.
In closing, chances are you have a tinhatter or two following you, so just think about it next time before you start putting them down. Everyone should be free to enjoy fandom however they want to, and tinhatting doesn’t directly harm you or anyone, really… except maybe those of us who believe a little too hard, but I feel those really are few and far between.
