rightwingwatch.orgTrigger Warning: Domestic Violence
Back in 2009, when Johnson was running for vice chair of the NC GOP, the media reported on his felony domestic violence conviction from 1996. He responded by releasing a statement of support from his ex-wife – “Were I a resident of the state I would vote for him.” Except she never said that. Months later the media reported that Johnson had fabricated the endorsement:
“I absolutely did not say that,” Ofelia Felix-Johnson, now living in Nebraska, tells Xpress. “This was not done with my consent, and I didn’t even know about it. I didn’t appreciate him putting my name out there when I had nothing to do with it.”
On the other hand, this did happen, as Sarah Posner reported at Alternet:
According to court records, Johnson was arrested on Christmas Day 1995 in Cleveland, Ohio, and was later indicted by a grand jury for two felony counts, one of felonious assault and the other of kidnapping. According to the arrest report, when the police arrived, they found Felix-Johnson bleeding from the face. Timothy Johnson told the officers, according to their report, “I admit it. I hit her, that’s the only way I can get her attention.” Felix-Johnson told the officers he restrained her on the couch, holding down her neck. One officer reports Ofelia Felix-Johnson saying that Johnson also punched her breasts, saying that she had no heart, and hit her over the back and buttocks with a plastic shoe rack, breaking the rack. The police report in the court file states that Johnson broke his wife’s nose and toes, causing her to be hospitalized.
Johnson pleaded guilty to one count of felony aggravated assault and was sentenced to 18 months in prison, which was suspended. A few years later, Johnson was arrested again on domestic violence charges:
In 1998, Johnson was arrested by the Perrysburg Police, again on domestic violence charges. According to the police report, Johnson provided a “very similar” account of the incident to that his wife Ofelia and 14-year-old son gave police. Both wife and son reported that Johnson had Ofelia Felix-Johnson in a wrist lock, and when the son attempted to stop Johnson from hurting his mother, Johnson put the son in a head lock such that he was “unable to breathe and was choking up food,” according to the police report. After the son broke free, the police report continues, Johnson “put his right hand around [the boy’s] throat and pushed [him] against the wall with his back to the wall and choked [the boy] for about 5 seconds.” According to court records, Ofelia Felix-Johnson did not appear for the hearing, and the charges were dismissed. Johnson told AlterNet that “the incident that took place wasn’t domestic violence. My ex-wife and I had a disagreement. And as always, well the person says, well I know you have this past on you so I’ll just call the police. And as you said, there was no conviction and there was no trial. You know why? Because there was nothing there.”
Given Johnson’s well-reported history of domestic violence and well-reported efforts to fabricate support from his battered ex-wife, it boggles the mind that Religious Right leaders would sign on to the above letter with him. In fact, their partnership with Johnson seems to take the War on Women to an entirely new level.
Michele Bachmann to Headline Conference with 9/11 & Sandy Hook Truther, Birthers and Anti-Gay Activists
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) will be joining some of the most extreme right-wing activists in the country at the upcoming Awakening 2013 conference, which is organized by the Liberty University-affiliated Liberty Counsel. Along with Bachmann, Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM) and Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are scheduled to take part in the Religious Right gathering.
Just how radical are the conference’s leaders?
The fact that it is hosted by Liberty Counsel, the anti-gay group led by Mat Staver and Matt Barber that has been implicated in the Lisa Miller kidnapping case, is the first clue to the Awakening’s far-right bent. On top of that, the event includes 9/11 and Sandy Hook truther Bradlee Dean, self-proclaimed prophet Cindy Jacobs and convicted domestic abuser and anti-women’s rights activist Timothy Johnson.
Anti-Gay
Mat Staver
The host of the Awakening conference, Staver has a long anti-gay record. He blamedthe 2008 financial crisis on banks that “actively promoted the homosexual agenda” and said lawmakers who support marriage equality “are not competent for public office.” Staver has repeatedly called for a “revolution” to protest gay equality and warned that gay rights laws will increase violent crime, kill people and eventually destroy America and western civilization. He defended a Malawi law criminalizing homosexuality and argued that Obama supports “forced homosexuality.”
Matt Barber
The deputy leader of Liberty Counsel, Barber has argued that suicide rates are higher among LGBT youth because they “look inward and know that what they are doing is unnatural, is wrong [and] is immoral.” He has described homosexuality as a “cancer” that prompted Noah’s flood and will ultimately lead to Communism . Barber has saidthat Satan is behind gay rights efforts, asserting that demonic “spiritual pressure” is driving the campaign to end the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on gay members. He has repeatedly denied that LGBT persons face violence or discrimination, while frequently arguing that the gay community is bent on molesting children. Hepraised the chief supporter of Uganda’s ‘Kill the Gays’ bill.
Shawn Akers
Liberty Counsel’s Shawn Akers has joined Staver and Barber in opposing gay rights efforts, even when it comes to measures to prevent the bullying of LGBT youth, which he called “a form of indoctrination and reeducation that smacks of socialist and Communist countries.” Akers instead accused gay rights advocates of bullyingChristians, turning “homosexual activism” into a religion and persecuting Christians in the same way as Adolf Hitler persecuted Jews.
Rena Lindevaldsen
Lindevaldsen, a Liberty Counsel attorney and Liberty University law professor, has been closely implicated in the kidnapping of Isabella Miller, whose mother Lisa Millerfled with her to Central America in order to stop her former same-sex partner from having custody. Lindevaldsen has declared that Satan is behind gay rights effortsand “plant[s] the seed” of homosexuality in people.
Bradlee Dean
Dean, a Minnesota-based Religious Right activist and close Bachmann ally, extolledMuslims who are “calling for the executions of homosexuals in America” as “more moral” than American Christians and applauded African nations that imprison homosexuals. He has called homosexuality “a mental illness” and blamed gays for the Holocaust. Dean also believes that the government staged the Sandy Hook and Aurora mass murders to push gun control policies and that it was also behind the 9/11 attacks and the Oklahoma City bombing.
William Murray
Government Is Not God PAC (GING-PAC) head William Murray has warned that President Obama, whom he calls a “dangerous racist,” has “stopped waging a war on Islam terrorism” in order to pursue a “jihad against non-Islamic groups—both Jews and Christians.” He claimed that the establishment of Social Security led to a decline in morality that meant “more young men destroy their lives in homosexuality.” He has blamed gay people for everything from turmoil in the Middle East to train crashes. Murray’s GING-PAC has charged gay rights activists with plotting to destroy the Bill of Rights and recently urged Sen. Rob Portman to send his openly gay son to ex-gay therapy so he won’t die of AIDS.
Greg Quinlan
At the Awakening 2012, Quinlan endorsed Lou Engle’s call to create a prayer movement to confront the “homosexual and abortion tornadoes” that are “coming to destroy America.” More recently, he linked homosexuality to pedophilia and called same-sex marriage “a ban on heterosexual rights.” He has argued that gays and lesbians are experiencing “sexual cannibalism” and promote suicide among LGBT youth in order to succeed in “making martyrs out of the kids that we’re recruiting to behave as homosexuals.” Quinlan’s organization, Parents and Friends of Gays and Ex-Gays, pushes harmful ex-gay therapy for children.
Rick Scarborough
Last year at the Awakening, Scarborough blamed Rachel Maddow and Brokeback Mountain for America’s ills. These were far from his only anti-gay statements. He hasblamed gay marriage and abortion rights for the Benghazi attack, and at Awakening 2011 described AIDS as divine punishment for homosexuality. Scarborough also invited controversy when he claimed that the growth of the Latino populationthreatens America and that non-white Americans will endanger the country’s Christian heritage.
Judith Reisman
Reisman, a visiting Liberty University professor who is fighting to criminalize pornography, has claimed that schools are brainwashing children into becoming gay and that gay rights advocates are emulated the Nazis. She also said that the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s Gay-Straight Alliances are modeled after the Hitler Youth and promote pedophilia.
Harry Jackson
Jackson has played a leading role in campaigns against marriage equality in Washington, D.C. and Maryland, fights he described as a spiritual battle against Satanic forces. He said that a demon called the Queen of Heaven is behind the push for same-sex marriage, which he warned “corrupts, perverts and pollutes” society. Jackson has also called marriage equality “a Satanic plot to destroy our seed” andwarned that gay rights advocates “want to recruit your kids” and are targeting young people “just like during the times of Hitler.”
Anti-Women’s Rights
Timothy Johnson
As head of the Fredrick Douglass Foundation, Johnson has worked on GOP and social conservative outreach to the African American community. For example, he worked with Religious Right groups to oppose the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. He was an interesting choice for the job, since he himself is aconvicted domestic abuser, and was arrested a second time for spousal abuse two years after his felony conviction.
Janet Porter
Porter is the architect behind anti-choice “heartbeat laws,” which effectively criminalize abortion. Such laws recently passed in North Dakota and Arkansas and have been considered in numerous other states. She has called on conservative Christians to gain control of government and the media, warning that under President Obama, conservatives and Christians may be put in concentration camps or starved to death. Porter prayed after the 2008 election that God would prevent Obama, whom she thinks might be a Communist spy from Russia, from taking office, andinsisted that God will send Obama supporters to Hell.

Doug Giles
Giles has smeared feminists as “misogynists with vaginas” who urge women to have “their vagina turned into a sexual turnstile” and become “the village bicycle.” “Have you ever seen a feminist around a womanly woman and not one of her butch buddies who’s sporting a Tim Allen haircut?,” Giles wrote. “Question: If feminists and lesbians hate men like they do, why do they try to look like us?” Giles has used similarly harsh language to describe progressives, “the radical homosexual agenda” and President Obama, who is the subject of Giles’ weird music videos.
Anti-Muslim Activists
Pamela Geller
A conspiracy theorist blogger, Geller has repeatedly suggested that President Obama is a Muslim — describing him as a “muhammadan” who “wants jihad to win” and supports a genocide against Jews — and the “love child” of Malcolm X, “a bastard, literally and figuratively.” She even attempted to justify far-right Norwegian terrorist Anders Breivik’s attack on a left-wing youth camp, going so far as to blame the victims. Geller has also called for the destruction of the Dome of the Rock andlikened an Islamic community center to a Ku Klux Klan “shrine.”
Jerry Boykin
A former general now serving as vice president of the Family Research Council, Boykin believes the U.S. is engaging in a holy war against Islam and wasreprimanded by former President George W. Bush for his anti-Muslim speeches. Boykin has called Islam an “evil” faith that “should not be protected under the First Amendment.” At one point, he advocated the banning of mosques. He has alsocharged President Obama with creating a Brownshirts-style paramilitary and aiding a Muslim Brotherhood “infiltration” of the U.S. government.
Video: Boykin believes Obama creating a private brownshirt army
Frank Gaffney
Gaffney is a birther who believes that President Obama is a “secret Muslim” andaccuses the president of supporting Sharia law and pushing “efforts to promote Islamism.” He has even said that Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel behaves like “an Iranian agent” and urged senators to oppose the nomination of John Brennan to head the CIA because Brennan knows how to speak Arabic. Gaffney also helped engineerBachmann’s witch hunt targeting Muslim officials in government. His views are so extreme that he has been banned from two leading conservative gatherings.
Apostles and Prophets
Rick Joyner
Joyner, who considers himself a prophet, has warned that the gay rights movement is a Satanic push to ban heterosexual marriage. Joyner claimed that Hurricane Katrina was divine punishment for homosexuality and agreed with a fellow prophet, Bob Jones, that Hurricane Sandy was judgment for same-sex marriage. He also believes that California will soon face a divine reckoning.
Cindy Jacobs
Another self-proclaimed prophet, Jacobs told Awakening 2012 attendees last year that Satan is behind the push for same-sex marriage. Jacobs has asserted that the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell led to freak bird deaths and blamed Obama’s “anti-biblical” decisions for natural disasters. She lauded another Religious Right gathering, Rick Perry’s The Response, for breaking the curse of cannibal Native Americans over Texas, and has taken credit for thwarting several terrorist attacksand coups.

IL-13: Matt Goetten concedes race after state certifies primary results - .Breaking news - bnd.com
bnd.comA month after the primary, one of the two Democrats vying for the 13th Congressional District nomination has conceded — the latest development in an unusual race.
Greene County State’s Attorney Matt Goetten conceded the Democratic primary Friday to Dr. David Gill of Bloomington.
Also on Friday, the Illinois State Board of Elections certified the March 20 primary vote: 15,536 for Gill and 15,373 for Goetten, who lost by 163 votes or 0.19 percent of the vote.
Initial results placed Goetten fewer than 50 votes away from Gill. While Gill claimed victory, Goetten did not concede, stating he wanted to wait until all votes were counted, including absentee and overseas ballots.
The newly drawn 13th District stretches from Champaign-Urbana across the state to Madison County, including cities such as Edwardsville, Glen Carbon, Maryville and parts of Collinsville.
Republican party leaders in the counties represented by the new 13th District will choose a candidate to replace Johnson, but have not named one yet.
Six possible GOP nominees have expressed interest in replacing Johnson: real estate developer David Paul Blumenshine of Bloomington; state Rep. Dan Brady, R-Bloomington; Jerry Clarke, Johnson’s former chief of staff; Rodney Davis, aide to U.S. Rep. John Shimkus, R-Collinsville; state Sen. Kyle McCarter, R-Lebanon; and Mike Tate, CEO of Independent Insurance Agents of Illinois.

2 allege Johnson's withdrawal was orchestrated | News-Gazette.com
news-gazette.comBLOOMINGTON — Two of the Republicans looking to replace U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson in Congress don’t like the way he pulled out of his re-election race, and believe his decision was orchestrated to benefit his former chief of staff, Jerry Clarke.
Johnson announced on April 5, about two weeks after he won the 13th Congressional District primary election, that he would not run for a seventh term in Congress. Clarke said that day that he was interested in replacing Johnson and that he had already begun calling the county chairmen who will make the appointment.
“It’s not right. This is not right,” said state Sen. Kyle McCarter, R-Lebanon, who told a Republican luncheon gathering in Bloomington that he is interested in the congressional seat. “You know what’s really insulting about this? It didn’t just happen. There was talk of this happening a year ago, and it’s a real insult to the people. Like I said, their vote was taken away from them.
“I think we’re used to politics as usual. The politics as usual is that you manipulate the system to put certain people in positions of power. That’s not the way it ought to be. The people should decide who is going to be speaking for them. Remember, this power that (politicians) have, they don’t own it. It’s only borrowed from the people who elect them. We forget that. But when you have people in back rooms who decide they are going to put in place who they want so that they can control them and they can control what happens in this country, that’s wrong.”
McCarter said the county chairmen should slow down the process to appoint Johnson’s replacement.
Sam Spradlin, a Springfield truck driver who also wants to be considered by the GOP county chairmen, said Monday that “this feels like a hand-me-down to Jerry Clarke.”
Spradlin originally had planned to challenge Johnson in the March 20 primary, then pulled out of the race.
“Tim knew he was going to quit the race before the primary. He knew ahead of time,” Spradlin charged. “If they give this to Clarke, it’s a travesty.”
Spradlin also made his views known in a 5-minute video he posted Sunday on You Tube. In it he predicted that if county chairmen choose Clarke, “you will have a mutiny on your hands.”

capitolfax.comErika N. Harold (born 1980) was Miss America 2003, having qualified for the pageant by being selected Miss Illinois 2002. Her official platform was “Preventing Youth Violence and Bullying: Protect Yourself, Respect Yourself.” This platform choice was said to have grown out of personal experience; she recounts having been the subject of racial and sexual harassment while growing up. However, in the first week of her reign, she also adopted a dual platform for Sexual Abstinence, causing some pageant observers to accuse her of harboring a hidden agenda. She held a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington during which she claimed the Miss America organization was bullying her.
Harold’s ethnic background is extremely varied. On her father’s side, she has Greek, German and Welsh ancestry, and on her mother’s side, Native-American, African-American and Russian descent.
Harold was born in Urbana, Illinois. She attended University High School.
