While I realize that many of the West’s criticisms towards China are legitimate, I really hope people don’t jump to the conclusion that the entirety of China is like 1984.
For example, even if the internet’s censored in China, if there’s one thing Chinese people are good at, it’s at completely ignoring the rules. Can’t access site? VPN/proxies. Word’s censored? Use similar sounding characters.
Oh yeah, and “Free Tibet” stuff…now I admit I’m not completely familiar with Tibetan history, but I really hope supporters of “Free Tibet” don’t have this image of Tibet as this idyllic place full of monks who are being oppressed by the big bad Chinese government. I mean, in the 1950’s, there was still serfdom in Tibet. Tibet’s history is far more complicated than monks being Buddhists.
Can’t say I’m sympathetic towards the Communist Government for what they’ve done (my dad ended up working in the factory for 10 years because all the schools were shut down during the Cultural Revolution), but people who denounce China based only on what’s on the headlines are just as bad as the brainwashed teenagers of the Cultural Revolution.
