Although Thelma (or Telma)  is believed to be based on the Greek word thelema meaning wish or an act of will, it is not as ancient as its original language might suggest. In fact it is a very recent addition to the world’s list of names, believed to have been created by Marie Corelli to be the name of the heroine of her 1887 novel, Thelma, A Norwegian Princess. Corelli was a very popular British author, making 10,000 pounds per novel by 1895. Thelma must have done very well, because by the end of the 1880s the name had broken into the top 1000 girls’ names. Not bad for a name that had barely existed 1885.^[1]
