CONGRATULATIONS #NYANCATCITY ART RAFFLE WINNERS!


Thank you to all artists and participants!  And congratulations to all winners—many of which were from the very community that donated to the cause. (Winners were drawn blindly and publicly by Kia Kamran, Attorney at Law.)

This Saturday, as part of #NyanCatCity, New York Art Department hosted Cut & Paste: A day dedicated to the DYI culture of Zines in the context of digital culture. The day’s event included a zine-making workshop organized by NYC’s Luck You Collective; a zine stand curated by NYAD’s own, Julian Gilbert and Printed Matter; an Art Talk panel discussion centered on self-publishing on and off-line; and the central event: an Art Raffle fundraiser for Printed Matter:

Printed Matter is the world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of publications made by artists.

Last October Hurricane Sandy flooded Printed Matter’s basement, destroying thousands of books and severely damaging archives dating back to 1978. The damaged collection has been freeze-dried as a temporary solution—but the archive must be digitized before the works deteriorate and are gone forever. It is essential to preserve these historical works for future generations.

For the fundraiser, New York Art Department asked artists to donate original Nyan Cat-inspired artworks to raise funding for the digitization of the this priceless archive. The artworks were shown and raffled off at The Hole between 12 and 8PM. Tickets were sold for $10.00 and all proceeds will support Printer Matter’s rescue efforts.

We are pleased to list the lucky winners below, and announce that all artworks from the exhibition will be published in a commemorative zine to be sold as the second phase of our fundraising effort for Printed Matter.

The Hole (2009)

Joe Dante (Gremlins) akhirnya kembali ke layar lebar setelah sekian lamanya ia vakum (atau malah sedang mengumpulkan ide untuk film ini??) dari kancah perfilman. Dan comeback movie-nya adalah The Hole. Film bergenre horror/thriller yang berprotagonis 2 anak remaja dan seorang anak kecil. Kedengaran tidak menjanjikan? Okay, let’s just start with the story first…

Dane (Chris Massoglia) bersama dengan adik (Nathan Gamble) dan ibunya (Teri Polo) pindah ke sebuah kota kecil setelah terjadi sebuah konflik di sekolah Dane yang memaksanya untuk pindah atau tetap tinggal disana dengan menanggung masalah di sekolahnya. Di tempat tinggalnya yang baru, Dane ‘naksir’ Julie (Haley Bennett) yang merupakan a-girl-next-door. Dan setelah serangkaian kejadian, Dane dan adik lelakinya yang bernama Lucas dengan tidak sengaja menemukan sebuah lubang tua yang tidak berdasar di basement rumah barunya tersebut. Setelah menyelidiki lubang tersebut, sesuatu yang aneh dan berbau supernatural sepertinya hidup didalam lubang tua tersebut. Yang akhirnya, membawa Dane, Lucas dan Julie ke perjalanan membasmi whatever’s lying there in the hole.

Plot yang benar-benar sudah tidak asing lagi di telinga para moviegoers terutama para pecinta film horror ini memang sempat membuat para kritikus film pesimis mengenai kemampuannya untuk menghibur atau membuat kaget para moviegoers yang memang kebanyakan telah bisa menebak kelanjutan dari sinopsis The Hole. Ya, kedengaran sangat tidak menjanjikan di zaman dimana seluruh film horor atau thriller berusaha untuk membuat plot yang tidak bisa ditebak oleh kebanyakan orang. Well, that’s kinda a hard thing to do. Film ini mungkin hampir mirip Gremlins juga dengan alur cerita yang simple dilengkapi dengan para aktor-aktor muda yang mendominasi layar. Tapi ini film Joe Dante. Ia adalah seorang visioner. Dan film-filmnya yang telah lalu menampilkan sifat visioner-nya tersebut. Okay, first, jangan harap inti dari film  ini adalah hal-hal yang berbau supernatural yang hidup di lubang tua di basement rumah Dane dan keluarganya. Sebuah twist yang cukup keren menerbangkan potensi ini lebih dari potensi film-film horor biasa. Second, style The Hole yang ringan dan sangat lemah dalam adegan gory membuat film ini dapat diakses oleh semua orang dari segala usia. Finished?

Massoglia dan Gamble terlihat paling dominan diantara para anggota cast yang lain di film ini. Sedangkan Bennett dan Polo lebih terlihat sebagai karakter cardboard yang sayangnya tidak dimanfaatkan lagi untuk membuat film ini lebih bagus. Well, I guess that’s all I can say about the cast.

Style komikal Dante yang digunakan dalam Gremlins dan film-film-nya yang lain juga tidak digunakan oleh film ini secara maksimum. Hal ini juga cukup fatal karena film ini menjadi terlihat sangat mediocre tanpa style khas Dante tersebut.

Overall, The Hole is a pretty enjoyable light-horror flick that can be enjoyed by the whole family!
