Kickstarter comic 'artist' stealing art, please help!
I was on the Kickstarter site and saw this Kickstarter on the front page, Iconic: Abstract Art Series of Heroes & Villains.
Is it just me or is this artist taking pre-existing comic images and just sing Photoshop filters to then sell them as original prints…? He says he wants to use the money to fund his NYCC table, sounds to me like this guy is gunning to be the new Rob Granito.
This is his Harley Quinn print that looks like he’s just tracing around the Adam Hughes Harley statue to create the image:
This may not be the original Jim Lee Green Lantern he ripped from, but I know I’ve seen the original before. I know Jim Lee’s work, I grew up
his body shapes and the way he draws his characters.
Yeah no caption needed for this one.
His Superman looks like it’s ripped from a Christopher Reeve Superman poster and his Nightwing looks oddly like a cosplayer I remember seeing.
Any way I’ve reported the Kickstarter with my evidence, if you could all report it too, or boost the signal, or at least try and help me get some more proof. (All of these images seem to familiar to me, but Google image search is failing me a little.) I hate to drag this guy over the coals, but I’d really hate to see him make $10,000 off of the hard work of others like this.
If you have any respect for comics as a craft, or the creators; you respect their work. It’s okay to save their images, it’s okay to re-draw their pictures because you liked the original work, but the second you start turning it for a quick buck - that’s when you show you have little to no respect for comics as a medium, the people who slave their ass off day to day the bring us great stories (or statues, or games, etc.) or the work they do.
Bleeding Cool has run the story, with more proof. The project creator has also told me that he’s waiting to hear from DC legal before he pulls the project, despite getting a cease and desist from Marvel during the project itself.
From the project creator himself as of a few minutes ago:
“One reason people’s aversion to poetry sometimes passes over into strong annoyance, or even resentment, is that poems steal our very language out from under us and return it malformed, misshapen, hardly recognizable...”—Dan Chiasson on poet David Ferry’s beautiful thefts: http://nyr.kr/WtVe8C
So wait did Glee really rip off Jonathan Coulton's cover of Baby Got Back?
No, for real, did that just happen?
I don’t watch Glee, but this is their version:
And some proof so it doesn’t sound like I’m whistling out of my ass:
I’m just wondering if the creator of Glee will just call everyone homophobes again when he gets called out on this. My favorite part is how they kept his name in the song when they grabbed his cover, but didn’t credit him anywhere.
“As a writer, you're always something of a vandal. You're a tomb raider. You're gonna go in there and take the things that already exist - drag 'em out again, and dress them up differently. There is a sense in which you are a thief. It's no wonder that writers are ruled by Mercury, god of thieves and liars, and Mercury of the double tongue. There is the sense in which you will always steal, and take for yourself, the things that you need. But then you also bring them back into the light. You dust them down, and then you put them out again for people to find in a different way. The whole thing about myths is that they need to stay fluid, they need to keep moving, and they need to be dynamic. And that's why we can go on retelling them, so that, what is valuable is passed on from generation to generation, across time, through cultures.”—Jeanette Winterson
A tentative list of my works that have been renamed and reuploaded, many for sale, by Luceds
EDIT: As of 3:00 AM PST, May 25, 2013, Luceds has removed all of my works from his websites and apologized; both the apology and my response can be found on this blog. Thank you for your support through this trouble.
Recently, I discovered that a “musician” by the name of Luceds had stolen and reuploaded a few of my tracks to several outlets, many of which were made for sale via Bandcamp. Luceds seems to have taken my tracks (and others), rebranded them as his own, and themed them around My Little Pony in what I can only imagine is an attempt to use the popularity of that fandom to put money in his own pocket by selling stolen works. For every song that he has stolen from me, I have conclusive and demonstrable evidence dating and detailing their creation and origin (duh, because I made them!)
Note: The above was released by Luceds as a “teaser.” My release, which predates it, is the full song. Decide for yourselves.
The fact that this is only what I could find immediately is staggering. Who knows if there’s more, or if this person has stolen from others? (Hint: It’s pretty damn likely).
The only comparison I’ve found connecting Luceds and myself was on the My Little Pony website Equestria Daily, where the stolen track “Two Sides of One Smile” was posted. Someone called Luceds out in the comments, but apparently deleted their comment after someone came rushing to defend Luceds. However, there was something fishy about the matter…
…Yeah. The avatar on the comment matches the art for one of Luceds’s tracks. I think I see what happened here. Whoops!
At this point I should clarify, although I should not need to, that the Equestria Daily comment is overwhelmingly false. I am most certainly NOT Luceds, and the whole thing about splitting my YouTube channel? I have never said anything of the sort, nor do I have any desire to do so in order to “make music for ponys.”
It is very, very, incredibly obvious that Luceds is using stolen music and the giant My Little Pony fandom as a platform to personal profit at the expense of hours of hard work of others. If ANYONE has ANY shadow of a doubt that the works I listed above were not entirely composed and arranged by myself, I will not hesitate to provide evidence that only I have access to, as the original creator, such as excerpts from the original project files.
This isn’t about getting Luceds to remove these blatant infringements and apologize. I have the appropriate legal methods and grounds to take care of that myself, obviously. If you or someone you know has been similarly ripped off by this person, or any other, I encourage you to do the same.
This is about awareness, because I know Tumblr is a place that is heavily invested in the MLP fandom and its creations - Luceds is a thief, plain and simple, and if you’ve given your money to his Bandcamp or followed him on Soundcloud or YouTube, you have monetarily or otherwise supported theft from artists who put their hard work and souls into their creations. I do not tolerate this, and neither should you. Please spread the word.
“When I came back into Room 5, the mom was acting guilty, like I had just caught her doing something. When she left to go take her kid to xray, I checked the drawer, and all the bandaids and ointment packets were missing. So, I called xray and told them to put her in Room 6 when they came back - then I emptied out Room 6's drawer completely and put a plastic spider in it.”—

(I would’ve just called security and moved on with my day…. which would’ve just created more paperwork for ME and a slap on the wrist for the patient. Lame.)
