I’ve noticed that John Coltrane’s late discography during his free jazz period gets increasingly dissonant and chaotic with each release. I like compare it to Charles Ive’s The Unanswered Question, wherein every time the trumpet asks “the perennial question of existence,” it is answered by increasingly frustrated woodwinds that eventually explode and become quiet. Death. And then the question is asked again. Same thing with John Coltrane, I suppose. And here I am, sitting, contemplating.
