The smoke was still swirling when Maple finally let her guard down. Her arms ached with a dull pain as she slowly lowered herself from her chosen safe spot, a high branch on a towering, hollow maple. She barely noticed the cramp in her limbs, it wasn’t so different from the hunger pangs that plagued her for the past… 3 sunrises? She walked slowly along, searching for any sign of life, or perhaps a small animal caught in the aftermath of the flames. Crunch-crunch-crunch, went the sooty remains of leaves and bushes as they were trod on underfoot.
