“As long as someone's holding your hand, it doesn't matter where you're going. As long as someone's listening to you, it doesn't matter what you are talking about.”

—Liang Mu Cheng, Autumn’s Concerto

saw this going around and i thought i'd make a sino version

Dear White People

When you have to wake up early every weekend to go to Chinese school

when you go to that Chinese school (which takes place in another school’s building) and you have lovely little notes from the kids there telling you to “go back to your homeland”

when you try to buy lunch at school and the lunch lady tells you to speak to the Asian woman so you can “talk in your own language”

when you are biking down the biker’s lane and a white guy on the street tells you “Get out of the street, you stupid chink!”

when you stop speaking the language your parents speak because you’re embarrassed and the other kids at school keep mocking you for speaking that language

when your parents shame you for not being able to speak that language

when you’re called illiterate when you can’t read the language you were shamed into not speaking

when you can’t communicate with your poor grandparents because you were mocked for speaking that language

when you speak english more fluently than your other language and know english grammar better than half the white people you know but still get asked if you speak english anyway

when you’re afraid of being friends with white people because you don’t know if they’re only your friend because you’re asian

when your white friend thinks it’s okay to say “ching chong” and call you a “chink” because you’re their friend

when the only depictions you can find of yourself in the media are stereotypes or white people in yellowface

when people ask you if you are Korean or Japanese and get disappointed in you when you’re not

when they immediately label everything they deem “cool” that’s blatantly Chinese “Japanese”

when they find out it is truly Chinese and they rationalize that it was “stolen” from Korea or Japan

when your ethnicity has to be hyphenated before your nationality

when the country your parents came from is reduced to nothing but an oppressive, communist country

when people constantly steal children like you from their home countries and call it “saving” them

when people refuse to watch movies or listen to music from your country because “the language sounds weird” and is “not as good as Japanese or Korean”

when your words are reduced to nothing but “ching chong”

when Taiwan’s independence means less than the inconvenience of simply not saying “China, Taiwan, same thing”

when your family makes you feel like shit because your grades are not as good as your cousin’s or your sibling’s

when Chinese New Year is just another big, exotic party to make white people feel “cultured”

when you’re out on the street and some random white guy passing out flyers suddenly bows and says “ni hao, ni hao ma”

when your ancestors were brutally tortured by the Japanese, when your grandmother was whipped and beaten for not speaking Japanese at school and weeaboos still root for Japan because it’s “the cooler country”

when white people forced opium onto your ancestors (and your people still suffer from the effects of it), when they colonize your land and don’t understand why it’s so fucked up that we only recently got Hong Kong back in 1997

when people don’t understand there are dialects than Mandarin and Cantonese and there are ethnic groups other than Han Chinese

when you have to live every day being ashamed because you’re the way you are

then you can celebrate Chinese New Year’s

then you can hand out red envelopes

then you can “speak Chinese”

then you can marry a Sino woman and talk about how you’re “practically Chinese”

then you can be Sino
