Antibiotic resistant gonorrhea superbugs on the rise

blogs.discovermagazine.com

“After years of warning that drug resistance in STDs was on the way, scientists have now found a strain of the bacterium that stands up to the usual antibiotic treatments, sparking fears that the days of easily banished gonorrhea are over. […]

Cases of gonorrhea that are resistant to the antibiotics usually used to treat the disease—cefixime, which is taken orally, and the injectable ceftriaxone—have been on the rise, reports MSNBC: According to the CDC, the number of samples from patients showing greater than normal resistance to cefixime grew from .2 percent in 2000 to 1.4 percent in 2010, while ceftriaxone resistance grew from .1 percent to .3. This particular finding is worrisome mainly because there aren’t any other well-established treatments for oral gonorrhea—because of its location, swallowing cefixime pills doesn’t help.”

While the strain isn’t uncurable, just difficult to kill, this certainly bodes poorly.

Recalled Burgers Have Drug Resistant Salmonella.

salmonella

The recent Jennie-O turkey burger recall may be worse than previously thought. The company recalled 28-tons of turkey burgers last week due to reported illnesses and after further testing it appears the tainted patties harbor drug-resistant salmonella.

The salmonella is a super-strain that has evolved from exposure to antibiotics. This means that it can’t be killed with most available drug treatments.

Salmonella, and other bacteria, evolve to become drug resistant strains after being exposed to antibiotics over long periods of time.  Modern factory farms fed animals over 35 million pounds of antibiotics in 2010 in the US alone. This was a contributing factor to over superbug related 65,000 deaths that year.

Practices like this are meant to keep infections down when animals live is tight feces covered quarters but what they end up creating is far more dangerous.

I’m thinking Jennie-O’s stock is going to take quite a hit after this.

First cases of totally drug resistant TB in India; one dead.

This is as scary as it can get. The PD Hinduja hospital detected four people with total drug resistant (TDR) tuberculosis (TB), the first such cases in the country till November last year. In the last two months, eight others have been detected with TDR-TB.

Of the 12 patients, a 31-year-old woman from Dharavi died in November 2011. She underwent a surgery to remove one of the infected lungs before she passed away. Doctors say the condition is a result of inappropriate treatment of TB patients in private clinics. A person with TB can infect 15 people a year and cause an epidemic, according to doctors.

9 Ways to Protect Yourself From Superbug Bacteria

agriculturesociety.com

1. Avoid antibiotics as much as possible.

Use natural remedies instead of toxic drugs and over-the-counter medications.

2. Avoid processed foods, sugar, and anything refined.

Packaged and commercial foods contribute to disease and the growth of harmful bacteria in the body, which leads to chronic health issues or death.

3. Avoid using anti-bacterial soaps, washes, hand sanitizers, and any related products.

These contribute greatly to bacterial resistant strains which can make you sick or cause death.

4.  Wash hands when appropriate (but do not overwash), and use soap and water.

5. Use therapeutic grade probiotic supplements regularly.

Because there are so many chemicals, toxins, and now superbug bacteria in our environment, taking a high-quality therapeutic grade probiotic is something every man, woman, and child should be doing to prevent disease.  See the link above for recommended brands.

6. Eat fermented and cultured foods.

In addition to taking a high-quality, therapeutic grade probiotic, fermented and cultured foods are absolutely vital to supporting the immune and digestive systems. By preparing these at home, you ensure a better proliferation of bacteria and higher numbers since you can culture your foods longer than those bought in the store (which are normally cultured for only 4-8 hours). And with bacteria, the more diverse and higher numbers you can get, the better. Prepare these with safe, organic ingredients sourced from healthy farms (vegetables and dairy foods, etc).

7. Avoid processed foods and refined sugar.

These contribute to a weakened immune system and compromised digestive tract, and a negative effect on overall health.

8. Include plenty of real, whole and traditional foods in your diet.

Grassfed meats, pasture raised poultry and eggs, raw dairy foods including milk, butter, cream, sour cream, yogurt, kefir, olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, seafood from safe sources, organic fruits and vegetables, sprouted nuts and legumes, and use sprouted grain foods sparingly. Avoid anything that has been grown or raised with GMOs (genetically-modified organisms), pesticides/herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, and isn’t produced naturally.

Grains can be inflammatory for various reasons and can contribute to yeast overgrowth, digestive issues, and long-term auto-immune disease. Even sprouted/soaked and fermented grains may not be a good idea. Read more about why grains can be harmful to health: The Truth About Wheat and Grains – Are they Good for Your Health?
