feather hair extentions
seattletimes.nwsource.comso you know how everyone’s got those feathers in their hair lately?
well i had no idea that the feathers everyone is rushing to get were real—i didn’t know feathers got that long naturally on chickens. but it turns out they come from genetically engineered roosters with unnaturally long tail feathers, originally bred to make fly fishing lures. that’s what the extensions are: fly fishing lures that girls put in their hair. glamourous, huh?
personally, i don’t think i would want to put real feathers in my hair. to me it’s like wearing animal fur, which is something a lot of people frown upon these days. but that’s just me. the real thing that’s bad about this new fashion trend is the insane over-demand for these feathers. it’s becoming harder and harder to get your hands on one because the roosters can only grow their tail feathers so quickly. what’s happening is that thousands of roosters are being euthanized every week, just to try to keep up with some of the demand. this kind of rooster isn’t eaten, so they are killed for nothing but the feathers. sure, this happens normally for the fishing lures, but it’s happening on a much larger scale now because of the increased demand.
so basically thousands of chickens per week are dying simply so people can pluck out their tail feathers for teenage girls to put in their hair to satisfy a fashion trend. is it just me or does this seem a little ridiculous?
